‘Almost Maine’ Coming to Midtown Productions for 3 Week Run
Subject: Midtown Productions to open ALMOST MAINE January 20 for three week run
January 9, 2017, Charleston, SC — Since 2004, John Cariani’s hilarious and heartwarming play, ALMOST, MAINE, has been produced by over 70 professional theater companies and by over 2500
non-professional theater organizations across the United States and around the world. The show is finally making its professional debut in Charleston on January 20th, with performances continuing through February 4th at Midtown Theatre, located in the new Duvall Center at 2816 Azalea Drive, right over the North Bridge in North Charleston.
Synopsis: On a cold, clear, Friday night in deepest winter, the residents and visitors in the remote, mythical town of Almost, Maine (so far north it’s almost in Canada) find themselves falling in and out of love in the most unexpected, unusual, and often hilarious ways. As the northern lights hover magically overhead, knees are getting bruised, and hearts are getting broken. Literally. But the bruises heal and hearts mend — mostly — in this delightful romantic comedy featuring some of Charleston’s finest actors playing 19 different, delightful characters in ten different and charming “playlets”.
But I think The New York Times described the play best… “There are things you should know about the weird and wondrous Maine town called Almost. It is the sort of place where a young woman, if she had a broken heart, might put all 19 pieces inside a brown paper bag and carry it around. The kind of town where a guy cannot deny that he has fallen in love because he suddenly starts falling down. (Collapsing completely. Over and over. Can’t stand up for more than a few seconds.) A town where you can get up from a park bench, walk around the world and return by the end of Act II. Where the local hangout is the Moose Paddy and, as the waitress points out, ‘Drinks are free if you’re sad’.”
“Romantic whimsy meets magic realism. Imagine ‘Love Actually’ crossed with ‘Our Town.’” – The Guardian; “A beautifully structured play, with nifty surprise endings”- NY Times
