How often have you walked the sands of Folly Beach said to yourself, this would make the perfect MTV Real World Beach House?  It seems these thoughts may become a reality.  An unnamed source has indicated that MTV is considering a new season of MTV’s Real World and has been in discussions with five possible locations, including Folly Beach, SC.

Cities also under discussion are Laguna Beach, CA, Charlotte, NC, Memphis, TN and Portland, OR.  Sources say, these cities have each showed prominent growth in the mid-market size over the last few years and could bring in a promising audience base.  The need to branch out from the major urban markets such as San Francisco and New York is showing the shift in living patterns among Americans today.

This thought process is consistent with the growth we have seen in the Lowcountry since 2010.

Production teams have been scouting these five locations, speaking with locals and city officials and determine the best option for this reality show.  The early indication is that the production studio will make a decision by April 1, 2017.

Folly Beach

Folly Beach made the top five because it combines beach life, city life and a thriving economy that could bring a very positive spike in viewers.  It can also present concerns around traffic and sentiment from residents and visitors.  One issue that is also in discussion is the drinking ban on the beach and how the show could work around that restrictions.  One solution is the use of a fence to temporarily privatize a portion of the beachfront right behind the house.

With the new dining additions on the pier, a more diverse visitor base, the beach restoration and a thriving Center Street, Folly Beach could soon be in the national spotlight.  Move over Gronkowski, there may be some new muscle moving into town.

If selected, the primary city will have priority on casting, but sources say, they will interview in other locations to ensure a diverse mix in the house.

Keep you eyes open for further news as we may see MTV in the house rocking it Folly Beach style.

Are you saying that the folly council has already spoken with production???

  • Erin says:

Why should they get to privatize part of the beach so they can drink when nobody else is allowed? They shouldn’t be permitted to break, or bend the law, just for a show that promotes lawlessness. Come on Folly…you are better than this!

Killer house. I’ve liked the design of that place since it was build. Gotta be a great place to have some fun. Congrats.

Why would y’all want to disrupt the image of one the most peaceful areas in the county. Don’t let this trash take our Beach

  • Bonnie says:

Contrary to the last few words of your article “rocking it Folly Beach style”, this precious beach town and it’s residents are not interested in hosting a reality TV show. Our ordinances are not up for negotiation. Make no mistake, we truly are better then that (as previously stated in Erin’s comments).

I love how it says ‘city life’

I mean inventing the cotton gin only goes so far in the grasp for metropolitan acceptance.

Would love to watch Real World on Folly Beach. Probably only way I will watch show, would love to relive some old college days. Rock on Charleston!!!

We’ve got enough reality trash TV with Bravos Southern Charm. We don’t need another. All this would be doing is feeding into already preconceived notions of what South Carolina is. I really don’t see Folly authorizing nor even welcoming this without a hard core fight. We do just fine on our own representing trash when the rednecks of Moncks Corner and the Geechie of North Charleston come to the beach. We can do bad all by ourselves! We don’t need MTVs help with that. Onto the next city on the list!

Not too long ago( you know, before you ‘natives’ took up residence(Advantageously gentrified in the last 20 years I might add) upon the graves of single family homes demolished by HUGO) Folly Beach was synopsys with being where the gays went to cruise; a homo hotspot! To be more specific if you walk right, about 1/2 a mile, from the folly beach co. park facilities, where the beach begins to hook to the right- well, clutch them Pearls miss thang b/c 35 years ago that area was the(segregated) but oh so ripe, raw& raring gay beach of Charleston. Hundreds(on a good holiday) of homos, often nude, regaling in each others beauty and b0dy.

So imagine how you sound to an older guard with this ‘preservation’ schtick you are peddling (in what’s the most egregious to me) in some vein of ownership that’s just as obtuse as the likeminded county representation you’re stroking. If they are a trespasser; then you are a trespasser.

You entitlement offends me. You’re not the only one in the world – Your Children’s existence does fall into my ANYTHING! and your SACROSANCT position on motherhood(its always(and ONLY) you uppity, santimamous mommas that push these stepford, SANCTIMONIOUS ordinances onto other “woolly” people. But I see you and you offend me!
