Mary Joan Oexmann left Kentucky with masters in hand to be the research nutritionist for the General Clinical Research Center at the Medical University of South Carolina in 1974. It was a very specialized job combining art and science, the essential tools for creating anything! Her mother, a wonderful artist, was her mentor, inspiration, and joy when she began pouring oil paints onto watercolor paper in the early 1980s. Sometimes she floats the paint to then use paper to pick the picture up. Sometimes she soaks the paper in ocean water to then pour paint. There is a lot of experimentation which makes the creative process so much fun. Usually the results remind people of the wonderful shapes and colors we find in nature. On display in her James Island home on November 19 and 26.
