Samsung investing $380M in South Carolina, creating 950 jobs

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Samsung is investing $380 million in South Carolina to manufacture home appliances, creating an estimated 950 jobs over the next three years, state and company officials announced Wednesday.

The South Korean-based company is opening a “state-of-the-art” facility in the former Caterpillar plant in Newberry. Production is expected to start early next year. “Premium home appliances” made at the plant will include washing machines and will be sold primarily in the United States, the company said in a news release.

The announcement came hours after new South Korean President Moon Jae-in left for the United States for meetings with President Donald Trump. Samsung Electronics CEO B.K. Yoon signed the company’s plans Wednesday morning in Washington with Gov. Henry McMaster.

A celebratory event was to be held in Newberry later Wednesday.

“This new investment will enable Samsung to increase the speed with which we can deliver premium home appliances that reflect the regional preferences of our fastest-growing and most important consumer market,” Yoon said.

Company officials began considering expanding its U.S. production nearly three years ago and launched talks with South Carolina officials last fall, the company said.

Samsung already operates a call center employing 800 people in Greenville County, about 50 miles (80 kilometers) away.

Rural Newberry County is home to fewer than 40,000 people. Caterpillar announced in April 2016 it was closing its 325-employee electric generator packaging facility in Newberry to consolidate production in other states. At the time, it was one of Newberry County’s largest employers and taxpayers.

Samsung’s decision “is one that will change the very fabric of the Newberry community,” McMaster said. “Samsung will now be an important partner in ushering in an unprecedented period of economic growth and prosperity in our state.”

The board of Santee Cooper, South Carolina’s state-owned utility, approved a $2.75 million grant for Samsung on Monday, said spokeswoman Mollie Gore. The plant will be powered by Newberry Electric Cooperative, which gets its power from Santee Cooper.

Other incentives offered by South Carolina are not public information until an agreement with Samsung is completed and signed, which can take up to a year, according to the state Commerce Department.

The high-tech plant will employ engineers and a variety of technical and non-technical workers, the company said.

It’s the second large economic development announcement for South Carolina this week.

On Monday, BMW announced plans to invest an additional $600 million in an expansion, creating 1,000 new jobs over the next four years. The German automaker has already invested $8 billion in South Carolina since deciding to locate in Spartanburg County 25 years ago.

Last week, Siemens Corp. announced it was providing the University of South Carolina with an estimated $628 million worth of computers, robotics and unlimited licensing on the latest software to give students hands-on training for today’s high-tech manufacturing jobs. Part of the in-kind grant will create a “digital factory innovation lab” at the university.

Samsung said the company’s reasons for choosing South Carolina included its trained workforce, the state’s long record of recruiting and retaining other international companies, and access to the Charleston port.

BMW announces $600M expansion creating 1000 new jobs in South Carolina

BMW said Monday it will invest an additional $600 million to expand its South Carolina plant, creating 1,000 new jobs over the next four years.

CEO Harald Krueger’s announcement coincided with the German automaker’s celebration of 25 years of manufacturing in the state. BMW, which has already invested $8 billion in South Carolina, also unveiled its 2018 BMW X3, a compact sports vehicle expected to be available in November. It will be built at the plant in Greer alongside the BMW X4, X5 and X6.

The expansion will boost its workforce to more than 10,000 people. BMW will separately invest $200 million over five years on workforce training, Krueger said. The company touts the South Carolina plant as its largest worldwide, producing more than 411,000 X models last year. About 70 percent of BMWs made there are exported to more than 140 countries.

Last year, the plant reached a milestone with its 2 millionth exported BMW. The overwhelming majority of its exports leave through the Charleston port.

“BMW is the company that, in many ways, put South Carolina on the map when its leadership decided to build its first North American manufacturing facility” in the state a quarter century ago, said Gov. Henry McMaster. Others in attendance Monday included U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham and U.S. Rep. Joe Wilson of South Carolina.

BMW announced plans for a South Carolina plant in June 1992. Production at the plant off Interstate 85 between Atlanta and Charlotte, North Carolina, began two years later.

Krueger called the decision a “success story” arising from a strong relationship with the people and elected officials of South Carolina. “Our relationship with South Carolina has been built upon decades of professionalism, mutual trust and respect – and goes far beyond just building great cars,” he said.

Winning BMW took South Carolina officials several years, numerous trips to Europe and promises of free land, tax breaks and employee training. Officials say the success of that investment is evident.

Suppliers and other vehicle manufacturers have followed BMW to the state in the ensuing decades.

According to the state Commerce Department, South Carolina is now home to nearly 400 companies in the automotive industry, employing 66,000 people. Since 2011, five international tire companies also have announced new plants or expansions in the state, which ranks first nationwide in tire exports.

Mercedes-Benz Vans broke ground last July on a $500 million assembly plant to build Sprinter vans in Ladson, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) northwest of Charleston. For the past decade, the company has put Sprinter vans made in Germany back together at an existing plant next to the site.

And Volvo Cars is building its first North American plant, a $500 million investment, in South Carolina’s Berkeley County.

Acquisition to extend Blackbaud’s offerings for peer-to-peer fundraising to drive more charitable giving

CHARLESTON, S.C., June 26, 2017 /PRNewswire/ — Blackbaud, Inc. (NASDAQ: BLKB), the world’s largest cloud software company powering nonprofits and other social good organizations, today announced that it has entered into an agreement to acquire United Kingdom-based online fundraising services provider JustGiving™, whose online social giving platform has played a powerful role in the growth of peer-to-peer fundraising.

Under the purchase agreement for the transaction, Blackbaud has agreed to acquire all of the outstanding equity interests of JustGiving for an aggregate purchase price of £95 million, subject to certain adjustments. The closing of the transaction is anticipated to occur at the conclusion of a customary regulatory review in the U.K. Blackbaud expects to finance the acquisition with cash on hand and borrowings under its existing credit facility.

The acquisition comes as social and mobile giving continue to grow and fundraising driven by individual supporters rallying others in their networks (referred to as “peer-to-peer fundraising” in the sector) plays a significant and growing role in charitable giving. JustGiving has been a leader in peer-to-peer fundraising for both nonprofit organizations as well as individuals (also known as personal crowdfunding), with people in 164 countries raising over $4.5 billion for good causes through its online platform since 2001.

“Today, people are willing to do more than ever before to support causes they care about, but they want to do it on their own terms,” said Jerry Needel, president and general manager of Blackbaud Consumer Solutions. “To put their passion into action, they need technology that gives them the power to connect with other change agents and organizations. Bringing JustGiving into the Blackbaud family reinforces our strong commitment to catalyzing the impact of individual change agents. It’s also part of our commitment to helping social good organizations navigate and respond to key shifts in giving behavior.”

The acquisition will enhance Blackbaud’s capabilities to serve both individual donors and nonprofits, expanding the peer-to-peer fundraising capabilities Blackbaud offers today through TeamRaiser® and everydayhero®, which are used by leading nonprofit organizations to connect their causes to the individuals who support them. The acquisition will also add a new personal crowdfunding capability that can be rolled out in the U.S. and elsewhere, as well as position Blackbaud to better serve the U.K. market, where it has operated for more than two decades, and where JustGiving is a fundraising leader.

“As a software leader exclusively focused on innovation that drives social good, it’s in our DNA to respond to and anticipate changes in the way people give and connect with causes,” said Mike Gianoni, president and CEO of Blackbaud. “This is an exciting next step in our commitment to delivering modern, mobile-first, integrated cloud technology that powers social good. Together, JustGiving’s proven crowdfunding expertise and Blackbaud’s cloud solutions, customer base and leadership in the social economy are a powerful, unmatched combination that will ultimately forge deeper and more effective connections between people and the causes they support. This is the kind of innovation it takes to build a better world.”

Anne-Marie Huby, co-founder and managing director of JustGiving, said: “Social, mobile and the rise of crowdfunding combined are transforming the way people give, and the pace of change is unprecedented. By bringing together JustGiving’s community and social platform with Blackbaud’s unrivalled expertise and capabilities, we will be better able to help great causes reach more people and raise more money, more effectively and intelligently than ever before.”

The two companies have entered into a definitive acquisition agreement as of Friday, June 23, which will undergo a customary regulatory review in the U.K. The transaction is anticipated to close later this year, and the two companies will determine their full integration strategy at that time.

JustGiving is headquartered in London, U.K. Blackbaud is headquartered in Charleston, South Carolina with operations around the globe, including in London. JustGiving staff are expected to transition to Blackbaud following the completion of the customary regulatory review and become part of Blackbaud’s London-based International Markets Group, led by Jerome Moisan, senior vice president and president of Blackbaud’s International Markets Group.
