Pounce Cat Cafe was founded by Ashley Brooks and Annaliese Hughes, best friends who met during their freshman year at the College of Charleston. That dream became reality when they launched Charleston’s first cat cafe, partnering with the Charleston Animal Society, the largest animal shelter in South Carolina.

Ashley Brooks, a proud College of Charleston alumna, and Annaliese Hughes envisioned Pounce as more than a novelty. They saw it as a transformative adoption model—one that would help shelter cats find homes faster by letting their personalities shine outside of cages.

Brooks and Hughes, self-described “crazy cat ladies,” have poured their passion for animal welfare into every detail of Pounce. Their mission is simple: improve the lives of shelter cats and increase adoption rates by offering a comfortable, interactive space for both cats and people. By fostering connections in a relaxed setting, they believe adopters can make more informed, lasting decisions—ultimately reducing shelter overcrowding and euthanasia rates.

Adoption Successes

Since its opening, Pounce Cat Cafe has seen remarkable adoption success. As of February, 2025, the cafe has helped re-home over 2,700 cats—making it one of the most successful cat cafes in the country for adoptions. The average stay for a cat at Pounce is just 7-10 days, a testament to the cafe’s unique environment and its ability to match cats with loving families quickly.

The adoption process at Pounce is straightforward. Visitors spend time in the cat lounge, and if they connect with a feline friend, they can begin the adoption process on the spot. The team partners closely with the Charleston Animal Society to ensure each cat is healthy, socialized, and ready for a new home.

Hours and Experience

Pounce Cat Cafe is open seven days a week, offering flexible hours to accommodate both locals and tourists: 11 AM – 6 PM Daily except Friday when they remain open until 8 PM.

Located at 283 Meeting Street, the cafe recommends reservations, as it’s often fully booked—especially on weekends. Each one-hour visit includes a non-alcoholic beverage, with beer and wine available for a small additional fee. Berlin’s Men’s and Ladies, located at 114 King Street, a cherished family-owned clothing business in Charleston, South Carolina, boasts a rich history dating back to its founding on September 20, 1883, by Henry Berlinsky, an Eastern European immigrant who arrived in America with only $1.38 to his name. 

Starting humbly by peddling clothes from a cart, Henry’s determination and entrepreneurial spirit enabled him to save enough to open a store at the prominent corner of King and Broad streets in downtown Charleston, a location that remains the business’s home to this day.

The store quickly became a fixture in Charleston’s commercial and social life, surviving major challenges such as the devastating 1886 Charleston earthquake and later Hurricane Hugo in 1989, both of which tested the resilience of the business and the family behind it. Throughout its history, Berlin’s has been synonymous with quality, timeless elegance, and impeccable customer service, values instilled by Henry and carefully preserved by successive generations.

After Henry Berlinsky established the store, leadership passed to his sons Sam and Ben Berlin in the early 20th century. When Ben moved to New York in 1914, Sam took full control, and the brothers dissolved their partnership by 1932. 

Sam Berlin was a prominent figure in Charleston, involved in civic affairs and local sports, and was among the first Jewish Charlestonians to join the St. Andrews Society. The family name was changed from Berlinsky to Berlin to avoid commercial activity on the Sabbath, respecting their Orthodox Jewish faith.


In 1958, Sam retired, and Henry Berlin (son of Sam) joined his brother Alwyn to continue running the store. Henry remained actively involved in the business for decades, contributing to its ongoing success until his children, Steven and Elaine Berlin, took over in 2004. Steven Berlin, with over 30 years of experience at the store, and Elaine Berlin have modernized and expanded the business while maintaining its core values and commitment to quality.

Berlin’s evolved from a men’s clothing store into a full-service apparel destination, offering custom clothing, formal wear, alterations, jewelry, shoes, handbags, and accessories. The store’s women’s section, Berlin’s for Women, is currently owned and operated by Ellen Berlin, the fourth generation of the family to lead the business.

COLUMBIA, S.C. – FAYAT Group (FAYAT), a producer of road equipment, today announced it is expanding its Road Equipment Division operations in Fairfield County. The company’s $13.7 million investment will create 75 new jobs.

Located at 321 Blue Granite Parkway in Ridgeway, FAYAT will construct a new 100,000-square-foot parts distribution facility to improve its aftersales support for customers throughout North America. Thanks to the generosity of sponsors, donors, and attendees, the sold out event raised an impressive $202,245 in support of CCS, including $72,085 for scholarships and $130,160 for the Annual Fund

(CHARLESTON COUNTY) – With spring break upon us and summer just around the corner, many locals and tourists will soon flock to the Lowcountry’s beaches. Charleston County Parks encourages beachgoers to familiarize themselves with important information and best practices to ensure the most enjoyable and safe time at our local beach parks.

The Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission (CCPRC) operates Folly Beach County Park, Isle of Palms County Park, and Kiawah Beachwalker Park. From spring break through September, the beaches are quieter on weekdays, with Fridays, weekends and holidays seeing large crowds. CCPRC encourages beachgoers to take note of the following tips and important information:

Park Capacity

While approaching the islands, CCPRC encourages drivers look for digital highway signs denoting beach parking capacity. The status of the parking lot for CCPRC’s beach parks will be updated in real time by staff, so guests know before they reach the park if parking is full.

Kiawah Beachwalker Park has 150 parking spots and usually fills to capacity by 10:30 a.m. in the summer. The Town of Kiawah prohibits vehicles from idling or parking outside the entrance to Kiawah Beachwalker Park. When the park is full, staff can add guests to a virtual line. Text notifications alert customers as they move to the front of the queue. Parking for buses, RVs and campers is not guaranteed.

Isle of Palms County Park has 445 parking spots and usually fills to capacity by 10:30 a.m. on weekends and holidays, with spots often becoming available again in the late afternoon. When parking is full, police will allow up to about 20 vehicles to wait in line for spaces to open. Once the turn lane outside the park is full, police direct vehicles to move to other parking areas not operated by CCPRC. Be aware of City of Isle of Palms parking ordinances. And note that there are only two lanes of traffic leaving Isle of Palms and Sullivan’s Island. On a crowded day, if weather or another event causes many people to try leaving the islands at once, traffic will back up, and it could take up to two hours for the park to empty. The free CARTA Beach Reach Shuttle is another way to access Isle of Palms County Park. 

Folly Beach County Park has 225 parking spots and usually fills to capacity by 10:30 a.m. on weekends and holidays, with spots often becoming available again in the late afternoon. When the parking lot is full, look for City of Folly Beach parking lots on West Ashley Ave. to prevent blocking roads and driveways. Review City of Folly Beach parking ordinances in order to avoid being towed or ticketed.

The beach surrounding the Folly Beach Pier can be a troublesome location for rip currents. Staff at the pier frequently respond to emergencies when patrons swim too close to the pier and get caught in rip currents. When swimming in the vicinity of a pier, stay at least 200 feet away from the structure. Also, learn how to spot a rip current and how to escape them by swimming parallel to the shore. Pets on the Beach

Pets must always remain leashed within the beach parks, but are not permitted on the Folly Beach or Mount Pleasant Piers. Each municipality has their own ordinances pertaining to dogs on the beach:

Alcohol & Smoking

Possession of alcohol, consumption of alcohol, and smoking, vaping and tobacco use are prohibited at CCPRC beach parks.

Other safety tips

·        Swim near a lifeguard when possible and obey their commands

·        Watch children at all times

·        Seek shelter when lightning is in the area

·        Take a photo of your group when you arrive, so if anyone were to get separated (child or adult) it could help aid in the search.

·        Bring water and stay hydrated.
