Knowledge Sharing from My Three Sons Heating & Air (Charleston, SC) – Striking A Balance: Get To Know Your Air Filters For Your HVAC System In The Lowcountry

My Three Sons Heating & Air, Charleston’s locally family owned HVAC experts and neighborhood partners have shared a new article for home owners and renters: “Striking A Balance: Get To Know Your Air Filters For Your HVAC System In The Lowcountry”.

It’s that time of year when fall starts to slowly creep into the Lowcountry.  For many area families that means all the fun fall activities one would expect. From fall local sports activities to pumpkin patches to Halloween events, there’s no shortage of things to do in the greater Charleston area this time of year.

It’s also the time of year, however, when many families are thinking about getting their HVAC system replaced and lining up their system maintenance as the seasons transition.

On the maintenance side, there are many things HVAC companies typically include – among those can be a quick look at your air filters.

Air filters – in most cases – are something the homeowner can manage themselves, with most modern units making a change quite simple.  That said, many Lowcountry homeowners may simply swap out what they have with something they’ve always used, without looking at the different options they have – or fully understanding the air filter’s role in their HVAC system operation.  To help you out, below is a very brief, but thorough rundown for you to give you a bit more insight into this small – but important – piece of HVAC equipment.

What Is An Air Filter?

Air filters, as the name suggests, is a piece of equipment that filters air that passes through it to remove small particles that may be in the air.  While we’re speaking from the perspective of the HVAC world, air filters have many, many different applications.  You’ve most likely heard the word “air filter” used by your local car mechanic as they can be used to filter out particles that may end up damaging the engine.

There are many other applications, but here the idea is simple – HVAC air filters are placed within the system to remove small particles like dust, pollen, small fibers and other particulates from your home’s conditioned air.

Air Filter Types

Not all air filters are built the same – they come in a variety of types.

Among these are fiberglass (the most affordable), pleated (usually made of cotton or polyester), washable (allowing you to use the same filter for a period of time) and finally electrostatic (which uses static electricity to “pull” and “attract” particulates that pass through the filter).  Other, more advanced filters include carbon filters (more common for removing odors) and UV filters (which use ultraviolet light to kill bacteria in the air).  The most common type of air filter you’ll run into are either the fiberglass or pleated – for reasons you’ll understand after reading below.

MERV Ratings

MERV ratings – short for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value – is a scale designed to measure the effectiveness of air filters at removing particulates in the air.  MERV values range from 1 to 16, with 16 being the highest.  The higher the MERV rating, the more effective it is at removing a greater percentage of particulates, each time air passes through the filter.  While other air filter rating exist, MERV is the most commonly used rating system you’ll see in the HVAC world.

Striking A Balance Between Effectiveness & System Efficiency

We touched on it above, but a balance has to be made when it comes to your choice of air filter.  As MERV ratings increase, the flow of air tends to be restricted to make sure it can capture the finer particulates that flow through it.  This restriction means your HVAC system might have to work a bit harder to push air through your system – which ultimately will force your system to work a bit harder than it should, over time.

This “harder operation” over time can reduce the lifespan of your system, in some cases.  This is why you’ll see the lighter, lower MERV rating air filters more often — they typically are better suited to keeping your system performing at peak efficiency.  It doesn’t mean that you can’t opt for higher MERV ratings – it just means you have to be a bit careful with your selection, if you do (to make sure your system can handle the added load).

When In Doubt, Contact Your Local HVAC Contractor

As always, if you’re concerned about your home’s indoor air quality and associated air filter selections, you can always reach out to your Lowcountry local HVAC company.  Especially in the case where you might want an air filter with a bit higher MERV rating, an AC company can give you more insight into your specific, customized indoor air quality needs.  And, because they only work locally, they can tell you exactly what’s working best – and what’s not working – for other Lowcountry families in your area.

Air filters seem like an everyday piece of equipment, but as you can see above, there’s a lot more to air filtration than meets the eye.

FEMA Supporting Southeastern States Ahead of Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine

WASHINGTON, D.C — As South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster declared a state of emergency ahead of potential impacts from Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine, FEMA, at the direction of President Trump and in coordination with the Secretary of Homeland Security, is postured and ready to support states along the Southeast coast, as needed.

While states and local partners lead preparedness efforts in their communities, FEMA is actively engaged with Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia to assist with needs that may overwhelm their capabilities. The storm could bring storm surge, heavy rainfall and flooding to portions of the Southeast, and residents should follow instructions from their local emergency management officials.

FEMA’s National Response Coordination Center in Washington, D.C. and the Regional Response Coordination Centers in Atlanta and Philadelphia are activated to help coordinate any requests for federal assistance and resources.

More than 100 FEMA staff are deployed to support state response actions, including Incident Management Assessment Teams and Federal Coordinating Officers. Urban Search and Rescue task forces are also pre-prepositioning to assist if requested, and additional personnel are ready to deploy.

FEMA’s state liaisons are embedded with state emergency operations from Florida to North Carolina, maintaining communication with state emergency management officials. To alleviate potential supply chain disruptions, FEMA is engaging with key transportation and fuel industry partners to ensure the flow of critical resources, if needed.

Residents should identify their risks, make a plan and stay informed to prepare for the storm. Here are some things to do now:

• Stay informed: Sign up for local weather alerts.

• Know your evacuation zone: Follow instructions from local officials about evacuation orders.

• Make a plan: Know where you will go to shelter and practice how you will communicate with family and friends after a disaster.

• Get supplies: Have enough food, water and essential items to last for several days.

FEMA continues to monitor the development of the storm and is coordinating closely with state and local officials to ensure readiness for potential impacts.

Pine Gate formed Blue Ridge Power as its engineering, procurement and construction company in 2021. At the time, Pine Gate said Blue Ridge Power would be headquartered in Asheville, and it would have offices in Fayetteville, Charlotte and Midland, Michigan.

Blue Ridge’s website states it has more than 700 employees. Blue Ridge Power is not part of Blue Ridge Energy or Blue Ridge Electric.

Since taking office in January, President Donald Trump has used his second term to end projects related to wind and solar energy. In July, Trump signed into law the One Big Beautiful Bill Act that ended subsidies for solar and wind energy projects years earlier than planned. Developers and analysts predicted that the legislation would slash the installation of renewable energy over the next decade.

Blue Ridge cited changes in the industry as the cause of the layoffs.

“Blue Ridge Power has experienced market headwinds similar to those impacting the entire renewable energy industry, requiring Pine Gate Renewables to dedicate significant resources to support the organization. After reviewing numerous options to find a path forward, Pine Gate made the difficult decision to conduct an orderly wind-down of Blue Ridge Power. Blue Ridge Power will continue to assess how best to support each of its ongoing projects, including working with its customers to transition those projects to another EPC provider. This decision in no way reflects the hard work or dedication of our valued team members, and we are deeply grateful for all of their contributions,” Pine Gate released in a statement.

Blue Ridge may be able to retain or extend the layoff date for some workers depending on various factors, which it did not specify. Blue Ridge workers are not part of a union.

Founded in 2016, Pine Gate has about 300 employees and has closed more than $7 billion in project financing and capital investment, according to its website. Its operations include more than 100 solar facilities accounting for more than 2 gigawatts of installed capacity. It reports it has 30 gigawatts of projects in development.

Blue Ridge reports it has built 7 gigawatts of solar infrastructure across the country, with projects in 14 states under construction.

Cooling Charleston with My Three Sons Heating & Air Heating & Air: How One Family-Driven HVAC Company Redefined Customer Service

By Mark A Leon

In the competitive world of home comfort, one Charleston HVAC company has distinguished itself not through size, but through an unwavering commitment to genuine care and integrity. My Three Sons Heating & Air Heating & Air was founded in 2023 by partners Travis Baucom and Alex Hammond who share a deep hospitality and service background.  Within less than two years, this family-owned HVAC business has quickly become a beacon of customer-first service in the Lowcountry.

The company’s origin story begins with its Alex and Travis’ shared experiences in customer service and a mutual desire to transform an industry often criticized for impersonal interactions. “We genuinely thought there was a huge hole in the local industry for a company that would actually care,” explains Travis Baucom. This simple yet powerful mission became their north star: to treat customers like family and provide solutions with compassion.

Rooted in hospitality, the founders brought a unique perspective to HVAC services. With backgrounds spanning restaurant design, bartending, to a family furniture business, they understood that exceptional service transcends technical expertise. Their approach can be distilled into a core philosophy: “Quality people + quality service = profit.”

My Three Sons Heating & Air

My Three Sons Heating & Air Heating & Air deliberately cultivated a team that embodies their values. Each hire is carefully selected not just for technical skills, but for their character and genuine desire to help others. This approach has resulted in minimal employee turnover and consistently glowing customer reviews that highlight not just professional competence, but genuine human connection.

“We’re not going to be for everybody,” Travis candidly shares, “not because we’re expensive, but because we won’t take on more than we can handle.” This commitment to maintaining an intimate, personalized service model sets them apart in an industry often characterized by impersonal, high-volume operations.

From their family to yours

The company’s family-centric approach extends beyond customer interactions. With Travis and his partner Alex Hammond, who are both fathers to three sons each, there’s a profound understanding that their business represents more than just a service—it’s a legacy. The company’s logo, featuring three children on a bicycle, symbolizes this commitment to family values and future generations.

We must include Katy Wall into this family model for she truly is the glue that bonds the relationship between My Three Sons Heating & Air and the satisfied customers throughout the Lowcountry.  Katy is the first and last voice many clients hear at My Three Sons, known for her calm professionalism and warm communication that instantly puts people at ease. Beyond the phones, she’s the vital link between the service crew, Alex, and Travis—keeping everyone steady and positive, even in stressful moments. Katy embodies the values and commitment to excellence.”

In a way, the service model harkens back to a mid-century ethos of reliability and personal connection. As Travis nostalgically describes, they aim to feel like “the milkman coming to your door”—a reference to an era when service providers were trusted community members, not anonymous technicians.

Empowering the Customer

The company operates on a clear philosophy: empowering the customer. Rather than keeping the process behind closed doors, the team is committed to equipping clients with knowledge—explaining not only how systems work, but how they can work better. This approach extends across every interaction, from introducing a new installation to walking a customer through the steps of a repair. It’s a passion that defines the company culture: making sure customers feel informed, confident, and part of the solution.

The quality customer service and philosophy of education and empowerment is clear in the customer feedback.  Customer testimonials consistently praise not just the technical proficiency, but the warmth and genuine care demonstrated by the team. Reviews frequently mention feeling like “part of the family” after a single interaction, a testament to the company’s relational approach.

Defining Success

My Three Sons Heating & Air has intentionally chosen customer and knowledge focus over expansion, prioritizing quality and connection rather than chasing franchises or dozens of branches. The company’s philosophy centers on staying closely tied to the people they serve. “We want to first and foremost mentor, care, and provide exceptional service,” Travis emphasizes.

Their success isn’t measured solely by financial metrics, but by the quality of relationships built. As Travis poignantly states, “There’s no money that we can make that would make me happier or prouder than seeing our mission statement written out by different people in our reviews.”

Developing the next generation of trade skills

Their vision extends beyond immediate business success to creating meaningful opportunities in the trades. Recognizing the critical shortage of skilled professionals, the founders are passionate about promoting careers in HVAC, plumbing, and electrical work. They’ve observed that trades like these are “desperately in need of good people” and offer stable, rewarding career paths often overlooked in favor of traditional four-year college degrees. By hiring young, passionate talent from technical schools and creating a supportive learning environment, they’re not just building a business—they’re helping reshape perceptions of vocational careers.

My Three Sons Heating & Air approach to talent is deliberate and forward-thinking. They specifically seek out recent graduates from technical programs, valuing their fresh perspectives and enthusiasm. “We wanted to have passionate employees doing this because they wanted to,” Travis explains, highlighting their belief that attitude and genuine interest matter more than years of experience. By nurturing young talent and providing mentorship, they’re creating a work culture that sees beyond immediate productivity, focusing instead on long-term professional growth and personal fulfillment.

What makes My Three Sons Heating & Air a uniquely special service delivery business in the Lowcountry?

In a world increasingly dominated by corporate impersonality, this Charleston HVAC company offers a refreshing alternative: a service built on genuine human connection, technical excellence, and an unwavering commitment to treating every customer like family.

Their story isn’t just about fixing air conditioning—it’s about restoring faith in personalized, compassionate business practices, one cool home at a time.

Travis, Alex, Katy and the teams’ commitment to blending traditional values with modern solutions is a core part of their business philosophy. As Travis articulates, they want to be “old school” while backing their approach with cutting-edge technology and intellect. This means not just clinging to outdated practices but strategically leveraging modern innovations to deliver superior service. “We’re not going to put a hand-crank heat pump outside your house,” they joke, emphasizing their commitment to advanced, efficient solutions.
