[MOUNT PLEASANT, SC] – Charleston County Parks’ Inclusive Superhero Dance Party returns to Mount Pleasant this spring! People with disabilities and their families and caregivers are invited to this evening event, held Wednesday, May 10 at the Cooper River Room at Mount Pleasant Memorial Waterfront Park.

From 6 – 8 p.m., these superheroes will take a break from saving the day to enjoy a dance party. Festivities will include a DJ playing favorite dance hits, snacks and refreshments! Costumes are welcome.

Advance registration is recommended for the Inclusive Superhero Dance Party. Advance admission is $4 and can be made by calling 843-795-4386. Admission will be available for $5 on site. Chaperones are required, but are free with participant registration. Click to Register.

Charleston County Parks will host other inclusive events throughout the year, including Inclusive Swim Nights at the waterparks and West County Aquatic Center on select evenings this summer, and the annual Inclusive Prom at the R.L. Making the most of your beach trip with Charleston County Parks

Tips to ensure fun this spring and summer

(CHARLESTON COUNTY) – With summer just around the corner, many locals and tourists will soon flock to our local beaches. Charleston County Parks encourages all beachgoers to familiarize themselves with important tips and practices to have the most enjoyable and safe time at our Lowcountry beaches.

The Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission (CCPRC) operates Folly Beach County Park (FBCP), Isle of Palms County Park (IOPCP) and Kiawah Beachwalker Park (BWP), and also offers lifeguards seasonally on the beach near the Folly Beach Pier. To make the most of your beach outing, consider arriving at the beach parks early or later in the day during the summer. Mornings and late afternoons are great times to take in the scenic Carolina coastline. Weekends tend to be the busiest times for the beach parks, but nice weather weekdays and long holiday weekends have the potential to become very busy as well.

As large numbers of people head to the beach parks during warm spring and summer days, guests should create an alternate parking plan in case the park is full. Keep up to date on the latest beach traffic reports by downloading the Berkeley-Charleston-Dorchester Council of Government’s Beach Reach app, or by visiting the ABC News 4 Beach Information Page.

CCPRC also strongly encourages guests to carpool to our beach parks to help maximize parking availability. Have payment ready to help reduce wait times at park gates and be sure to only use one parking spot. 

For 2023, Charleston County Parks will conduct many mitigation efforts to help with traffic and parking at the beach parks. Efforts vary from park to park and include extra signage denoting when parks are full, off-duty sheriff deputies assisting with traffic control, increased staffing at the parks, a new entrance lane, and virtual queuing software.

Charleston County Parks’ beach parks all offer seasonally lifeguarded areas each summer. Even with highly trained lifeguard staff on hand, it is crucial for beach-goers to familiarize themselves with important beach and water safety tips. Guests should always observe and obey all lifeguard commands, warning flags and signs. For a schedule of when lifeguards are on duty, visit CharlestonCountyParks.com. 

Parents are strongly advised to watch their children at all times. Charleston County Parks recommends that parents teach their children to always look for the lifeguards or other park staff in the event that they get separated from their caregiver. Missing children should be reported to lifeguard or other park staff immediately so that they can aid in the search process. Taking a photo of your child when you arrive at the beach can help with the search in the event your child becomes lost. 

It is also essential that beach-goers learn to identify rip currents and how to escape from them. Rip currents are identified by choppy and different colored water, a break in a wave pattern or foam and seaweed moving out towards the sea. Charleston County Parks advises swimmers not to panic or swim against the current if you are caught in one. The best way to escape is to swim parallel to the shoreline and back to the shore in a diagonal direction to move away from the rip current. When storms arise at the beach, lightning strikes are possible. If lightning is in the area, lifeguards may close the water for a period of time and all visitors should seek appropriate shelter.

Friends,

This note is to inform the Game Night community that we will be closing our doors shortly, with the last day to hang out with us being Wednesday, May 3. I want to thank each and every one of you for your support over the years. It has been a pleasure to serve you and to share my love of board games with you.

Shortly after announcing the creation of Game Night Charleston toward the end of 2019, Covid hit. During that time I was able to keep the name alive by hosting pop-up events at local breweries and other locations throughout town. For that, I am incredibly grateful. Once I obtained the space and a few more games, I quickly realized that there was a demand for what I was offering and I was ecstatic to share my enthusiasm for board games with others.

Over the years, the business has grown and evolved. I have added hundreds of games to the collection, hosted numerous birthday parties, team building exercises and other private events along with spending time with my loyal customer base. I have made many friends through this business and will miss seeing you all on a regular basis.

I would like to thank my staff for their hard work and dedication. They have been instrumental in the success of my business, and I am so grateful for their support. I would also like to thank my family for their support. They have been there for me every step of the way, and I could not have done this without them.

Clemson University to host 2023 National Quantum Technology Forum

Quantum technology has the potential to revolutionize the world — from enabling drug and vaccine discovery in days instead of years and better internal imaging simulations that detect early stages of diseases to improving national security and solving logistics and supply chain disruptions.

Leaders in quantum technology will gather at Clemson University Clyde V. Madren Center on April 14-15 for the National Quantum Technology Forum. The forum is a joint effort between the University’s Department of Physics and Astronomy and Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

“Quantum technologies are important because the computers we’re using today, even server farms and massive supercomputers, are limited in terms of computational powers. A lot of the problems our civilization and nation face are complicated problems with multiple variables,” said Kasra Sardashti, an assistant professor in the Clemson Department of Physics and Astronomy and lead organizer of the forum. The other co-organizer is Lin Zhu, an electrical and computer engineering professor. 

Unlike conventional computers that store information in binary form (1s and 0s), quantum computers exploit the strange properties of quantum physics to store information in multiple forms known as qubits, Sardashti said.  By leveraging two key phenomena — quantum superposition and entanglement — quantum computers can explore multiple solution pathways simultaneously, allowing them to solve problems that would take a traditional computer too long to calculate.

Yole Development, an international technology market research firm, estimates the quantum market will be worth $2.1 billion in 2030, with the quantum computing segment reaching more than $4 billion by 2035.

Showcasing innovation

The conference provides the opportunity for academic, government and industrial researchers from across the country to showcase their innovations in the fields of solid-state quantum computing, sensing and communication. 

Undergraduate and graduate students and early-career researchers are encouraged to attend the event, which was launched last year as the South Carolina Quantum Technology Forum.

The forum will offer a combination of technical talks and more introductory talks about what quantum technology is all about, the direction of the field and the implications for the industry.

“The forum will be good for people who want to learn what quantum is all about or STEM students and professionals who want to get into this field. It will also be good for those who are already working in the field,” Sardashti said. “Quantum is an emerging field, just like nanotechnology was 20 years ago.”

Some of the keynote speakers for this year’s forum include:

  • U.S. Rep. Cory Mills (R-Fla.), a retired lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Air Force who serves on the House Committees on Armed Services and Foreign Affairs.
  • Vayl Oxford, strategic adviser and director for global security strategy at the Savannah River National Laboratory. He previously headed the Defense Threat Reduction Agency, a combat support agency within the U.S. Department of Defense for countering weapons of mass destruction.
  • Robert Cava, a solid-state chemist at Princeton University, where he is the Russell Wellman Moore Professor of Chemistry. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences.
  • Christopher Richardson, Laboratory for Physical Sciences, who worked on the Quantum Information Science and Technology Workforce Development National Strategic Plan.

Registration ranges from $25 for undergraduate students to $200 for those in the industry. The deadline to register is April 13.

Dorchester, SC 29437) at the 2023 Charleston Wine + Food Festival and were we impressed. We want to share our love for this amazing farm to all of you.

About Peculiar Pig Farm

I started Peculiar Pig Farm in 2009 with my wife Nikki on the same land my grandfather once farmed.

Farming is something I learned how to do when I was a young boy. My grandfather would take me out on his farm in the morning to feed the hogs and take care of whatever needed taking care of. I began to find purpose when I was out there and would look forward to it every time I visited him. Farming on the land I was raised on is very special to me. I get to relive my fondest memories and put the love and compassion into it the same way my grandfather did.

Our animals are raised in wooded lots that allow them to roam and forage as they please.

We have many lots on our farms that are designated to our hogs at different stages of their life. When it’s time for our female pigs to give birth, we transfer them to our lot in the front. In this lot, there is a covered pen that can hold six birthing pigs at a time. Fresh hay is laid down and there is plenty of room for them to move around and rest where they like. Once the piglets are old enough to be outside that secured pen, they are free to roam around the lot. There are plenty of trees and mud for them to feel comfortable and they love having so many playmates. We keep our piglets with their moms for at least eight weeks.

The other lots are designated to different stages of their life as they get older. We also have chickens, geese, & goats that roam freely around the farm, without access to the pig lots. Our cows are stationed up front in a large lot where they have plenty of room to run around and graze as they please.

Welcome to the farm!

We feed our hogs with their health in mind.

Our pigs are fed a special feed with the addition of fresh fruits and vegetables. We value their lives and want to give them proper food.

In nature, pigs are omnivores so they would consume a diet of grasses, small animals, insects, earth worms, roots and dirt. Along with the feed we give them, our pigs regularly forage for things in the dirt and mud.

Diet matters and we prove that with the taste of our hogs.

Welcome to Full Circle Farm – Johns Island’s Goat Farm

Founded in 2016, Full Circle Farm (3014 River Road
Johns Island, South Carolina 29455) is the vision of Peter and Mary Conway. The farm has been developed to support local agriculture on Johns Island in South Carolina. This historic farming community, close to Charleston, has been threatened by urban sprawl and intense development. However, if enough folks continue to farm the land, tapping into renewed interest in organic methods and local, sustainable practices, there is room for farming to continue as a healthy part of our local economy.

In 2015, Peter and Mary became aware that a portion of an historic Johns Island Farm was being offered for sale in one-acre lots. These were existing fields and pastures, could they be saved from becoming a subdivision? Fortunately, the owner proved to be supportive of the idea of keeping the land in production; thus, a twelve and one-half acre parcel became Full Circle Farm. In 2020 another ten acres was acquired from the same owner providing more fields and pasture.

Today Full Circle Farm is back in production. Livestock on the farm include pastures full of horses, goats, and a donkey. There is a chicken coop and barn cats. The pond contains a flock of up to 30 ducks. We sell goat kids, young ducks, and duck eggs. We lease four pastures to horse owners who are interested in self-care.

We also believe in collaboration. The farmers at Spade and Clover use several of our fields to raise vegetables, herbs, and flowers. These are sold through a CSA, or at a farmer’s market. One of our fields is maintained by Sweetgrass Garden, which donates all it produces to feeding programs in our area.

This Earth month (April), Sprouts Farmers Market is launching a campaign to build 24 school gardens, in 24 cities in 24 hours. The Sprouts Healthy Communities Foundation is on a mission to help kids grow healthy with hands-on school gardening and cooking programs that bring nutrition education to life.

Founded in 2015, The Sprouts Healthy Communities Foundation strives to inspire, educate, and empower individuals, especially children, to live healthier lives – primarily through school garden education.

Since its inception in 2015, the Foundation has granted $15 million to more than 300 nonprofit partners which have brought hands-on, garden-based learning to 1.5 million children and provided nutrition education programs to an estimated 900,000 K-12 students.
