The Charleston Community mourns the loss of local Holocaust survivor Rose “Royza bat Chaim” Mibab Goldberg

On March 2, the Charleston and Jewish Community lost a beautiful soul and a fighter in the truest sense of the word. Holocaust survivor Rose “Royza bat Chaim” Mibab Goldberg spent 96 extraordinary years on this Earth and her story and legacy must continue in our hearts.

As we mourn the passing of this Holocaust survivor, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother to the Zucker family, please take a moment to read her inspirational story of survival.

Full Obituary

GOLDBERG (MIBAB), Rose “Royza bat Chaim” Dec. 5, 1923 – March 1, 2020, Born in Dec. of 1923, Rose Goldberg lived an amazing life full of love despite being surrounded by such overwhelming hate during her youth.

Rose, who defied the odds throughout her life, was a survivor of the Holocaust in which over 20,000 Jews in her hometown of Ludmir, Poland were murdered in the early 1940’s making Rose one of just 100 Jews from the town to survive. Rose bravely saved family members during the Holocaust, sometimes witnessing murders of her own family and living several months underground sharing a pipe with several family members to get air from above.

She eventually escaped with her brave husband Carl, whom she married in January of 1945. Their daughter Eva was born in a displaced person’s camp in Germany in 1946. In 1949, Rose, Carl, and Eva moved to Jacksonville, Florida in the United States thanks to a sponsorship from the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS). They came to the United States without money, family or friends and not only survived but thrived despite dire circumstances. Rose and Carl managed to buy a modest but beautiful home as Rose gave birth next to Anita and then Susie. Carl and Rose took on many jobs to make ends meet and Rose even voluntarily ran Jacksonville Hadassah’s thrift shop.

Rose’s small family of five in Jacksonville eventually grew to eight grandchildren (one passing away shortly after birth), seven great-grandchildren (soon to be eight) and a number of wonderful friends and family who will miss her sorely. Rose passed away in the company of her family including her three beautiful daughters who will continue to share her values and grow her legacy.

Rose was preceded in death by her parents Chaya (Of Blessed Memory or OBM) and Chaim Mibab (OBM) and her husband Carl “Kisel” Goldberg (OBM). She was also preceded in death by several siblings including a baby who passed away during infancy whose name was unknown (OBM), a brother Moishe (Yenta & daughter Esther) Mibab (OBM), brother Bentzi Mibab, sister Ruchel (engaged to Abe – OBM) Mibab (OBM), Herschel Mibab (OBM) and survived by Reuven Mibab (Dalia with three daughters Rachel, Achva and Orlee) and Peretz (Renee ((OBM)) and their four children Charles, Ben, Alan, and Malory). Rose is survived by her children: Eva Lipman (Charles), Anita Zucker (David) & Susie Davis (Bobby). She was preceded in death by her granddaughter Wendy Lipman (OBM) and her son-in-law Jerry Zucker (OBM) and survived by her grandchildren Andy (Andrea) Lipman, Emily Lipman, Jonathan (Laura) Zucker, Andrea (Aaron) Lee-Zucker, Jeffrey (Jessica) Zucker, Erin Davis & Drew (Dani) Davis, seven great-grandchildren (with another to come) and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers and should friends desire, the family has designated donations be made to any of the following in memory of Rose: Wish for Wendy Foundation (benefiting those with cystic fibrosis), 8480 Lazy Oaks Court, Atlanta, GA 30350. Addlestone Hebrew Academy, 1675 Wallenberg Blvd., Charleston, SC 29407. Congregation Dor Tikvah, 1645 Wallenberg Blvd., Charleston, SC 29407

May her memory be a blessing.

Charleston, South Carolina writer, poet and Editor of Charleston Daily Publications has just published his new novel “Letters from the Past”.  After publishing eight collections of poetry over the last 11 years, Mark has taken the leap to novelist with this coming of age story of love, personal exploration, and emotional soul searching.

Take a journey back to 1997 on the streets of Paris where love is always in the air.  That is where our story begins, but like most love stories, it is filled with trials, obstacles, pain, and tragedy.  In the end, our fates are truly unknown.

About Letters From the Past:

When two worlds collide outside a cafe in Paris in 1997, Emma and Graham know their lives will never be the same. Over the next five years, their lives and love for one another are tested.  Their story takes them from a quiet café in the heart of Paris to a poverty-stricken village in Tanzania to the beaches of the Outer Banks.

The debut novel by writer and poet Mark A. Leon explores the depths of emotional connection in this relationship and character-driven story.

A 27-year-old young aspiring corporate acquisitions consultant from Connecticut meets a recently divorced surgeon from Chicago in a fated encounter outside a small intimate cafe in Paris in 1997. 3 Utilization Taxes that could increase funding for education and infrastructure improvements in Charleston County

By Mark A. Leon

Two major areas of concern in Charleston County spurred by the rapid residency growth and tourism spike are academic quality (teacher to student ratio, quality of the curriculum, teacher salaries and commercial space) and the infrastructure of our residential and city streets and sidewalks.

We propose 3 utilization taxes that we feel will drive toward an eco-friendly behavioral change and raise funding for academics and infrastructure improvements.  All three put the weigh on the user, not the mass population.

  1.  Grocery store bag fee of $.25 per bag (plastic or paper).  Many areas have banned the use of plastic bags and urged consumers to bring their own reusable bags, but paper bags remain and in some regions plastic as well.  A sign alone reminding shoppers to use their own bags will not alone change behavior, but a fee of $.25 per bag will shift thinking and ultimately lead us to a paper and plastic-free community.  This tax over time will diminish as change management begins to shift behavior and fewer people are relying on paper or plastic bags.
  • Between Memorial Day and Labor Day between 9:00 AM and 6:00 PM, a $2.00 per car fee will be charged for any car entering Folly Beach, Isle of Palms or Sullivan’s Island or a $50.00 seasonal pass.  For sunrise and sunset chasers, dinner time foodies or evening beach events, these hours will not affect you.  These are prime hours for local and out of town beachgoers.  This is a small fee to pay considering parking will run between $10.00 and $20.00 per car.
  • South Carolina is ranked #42 in the nation in gas taxes.  Translated, we have the 8th cheapest gas in the country.  Across Charleston County, if we increase the gas tax by 5 cents per gallon, we can raise millions of dollars to support infrastructure and academics.  This is a small price to pay when you consider the cost of fixing your alignment after you hit a massive pothole.

If we implement these three utilization tax solutions, we can begin to move in the right direction to ensure we are giving our children the proper education and our local and tourist travelers have streets and roadways that are safe and well maintained.

The Lettuce LocalMotive, an upfitted scaled version of a container farm coming to Mount Pleasant this weekend

Did you know modern farmers can grow lettuce without using dirt? Or land, for that matter? Did you know they can harvest crops 365 days a year, regardless of hurricanes or draughts? They can if they’re growing lettuce hydroponically in a container farm. Hydroponic farming is a method of growing produce that uses water and nutrients, instead of soil.

As part of a year-long program to educate Publix customers about the benefits of hydroponic farming, and truly hyperlocal produce, The Lettuce LocalMotive, an upfitted scaled version of a container farm, will be on-site at Publix in Mt. Pleasant at 162 1125 Park W Blvd, Mt Pleasant, SC 29466  from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm on Saturday, February 29, 2020.

Customers are invited to step inside the interactive mobile farm to experience an actual hydroponic farming environment. Guided by Charleston, SC-based Vertical Roots farmers, the family-friendly event will showcase “a day in the life” of a hydroponic farmer, feature hands-on activities, and include salad bar samplings and giveaways. From hearing about how the shipping containers are converted into farms, to diving into the cloud-based technology behind the soil-less farming method, guests will learn all aspects of the sustainable benefits of hydro-farming.

If you’re in the area, we’d love for you to stop by. I’ve included some images from the Lettuce LocalMotive’s last stop as well as tour date infographics here, and am happy to answer any questions. Curious about more hydroponic farming facts? Read on below the sig line and check out this blog post over at Publix’s Checkout!

Best,

Amanda

More Fun Facts About Hydroponic Farming

  • Hydroponic farms do not use soil, and instead utilize water and nutrients to grow produce. Vertical Roots lettuce is grown in a blend of all-natural coconut fiber, which is chemical- and pesticide residue- free.
  • Vertical Roots uses a cloud-based technology that monitors and controls the farm pod environment including the temperature, lighting and water dosage.
  • The technology even tracks every single seed to ensure food safety.
  • The technology also manages the water recycling and filtration, which ultimately utilizes 98% less water than traditional farming.
  • Vertical Roots farm pods are made from refurbished shipping containers and can be placed on any surface. This enables produce to be grown in communities that don’t have farm land, and promotes land conservation in communities that do.
  • The lettuce is grown 365 days a year. Each farm pod can produce 3,400 plants per harvest, and are harvested 15-16 times a year. That’s a lot of lettuce.
  • While 95% of lettuce is grown in Arizona and California and can travel up to 2,000 miles before it gets to the plate, hydroponic farms can be placed anywhere to provide fresh local produce to grocery stores within a closer radius.
  • Because of the controlled container environment and technology monitoring, hydroponic grown lettuce often contains more nutrients than traditional grown lettuce.
