The Poignancy of Life – Original Poem

By Mark A. Leon

The poignancy of life is a profound and delicate flower
It blossoms so infrequently in the most ideal conditions
With a sprinkle of love
A dash to compassion
A flurry of honesty
A nurturing of sunlight

It is born inside all of us
Nestled in its womb

A heartbeat away from exploding on a journey through the universe

First stop, purpose
It’s a confusing place
So many wandering, looking, not sure what it is they seek

This stop is crowded
Not for the weak or timid
It is honored in is irreverence for goodness
All creatures unite

Next stop, knowledge
Knowledge is offered with a price
Some will tease it with gold and jewels
Others offer a quiet place on the hill void of pressure

This stop is filled with all the scents of Mother Earth
From here, one direction turns to many.
Some seek explanation, others continue on

Next stop, understanding
It all serves a better good

This means could end
We have become the protectors
Now nurtured, we are free to see our place

The stops become fewer
Distances longer
Weariness sets in

Next stop, Reflection one mile
Slow, ease in and step into the house of mirrors
No directions
No depth
Only self-awareness

Each line on your face, a story
All those you have left behind smile behind you

Drawn in, you don’t want to leave
There is comfort in these memories
A fragile stability to all of this

Time has another plan
We must move on

North Charleston based Ingevity unveils low-pressure adsorbed natural gas fueling station in support of its ANG bi-fuel vehicle technology

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Ingevity has completed the construction of a low-pressure adsorbed natural gas (ANG) fueling station at its global headquarters and technical center in North Charleston, South Carolina. The fueling station will supply natural gas to ANG bi-fuel vehicles outfitted with storage cylinders containing Ingevity’s Nuchar® FuelSorb™ activated carbon monoliths.

ANG technology is made possible by Ingevity’s activated carbon which reduces the storage pressure of natural gas without sacrificing the volume of gas stored through a process known as adsorption. Ingevity has produced and sold activated carbon for more than a century, including over 40 years in the automotive market capturing gasoline vapor emissions on vehicle-based systems.

“Low-pressure ANG allows for a paradigm shift in the use of natural gas as a transportation fuel and enables safe, economic fueling using the existing on-site natural gas infrastructure at work and at home,” said Michael Wilson, president and CEO at Ingevity. “Our commitment to ANG technology reinforces Ingevity’s vision to purify, protect and enhance the world around us by harnessing the efficient and environmentally friendly properties of natural gas.”

The new fueling station houses one appliance that is suitable for multi-vehicle fleet use and another appliance that simulates an at-home residential fueling solution. Both appliances will slow-fill natural gas to a targeted 900 psi, refilling the ANG cylinders within several hours.

“Ingevity’s investment in an on-site ANG fueling station represents our confidence in the value of this technology and its commercialization,” said Ed Woodcock, executive vice president and president of Performance Materials at Ingevity. “Data collected from the on-site fueling station will be an invaluable component of future partnerships with local gas utilities and alternative, light-duty vehicle fleet operators across the U.S. in support of future ANG vehicle rollouts.”

If life get your down, this story could change your thinking #Motivation

This is Jim Thorpe. Look closely at the photo, you can see that he’s wearing different socks and shoes. This wasn’t a fashion statement. It was the 1912 Olympics, and Jim, an American Indian from Oklahoma represented the U.S. in track and field. On the morning of his competitions, his shoes were stolen. Luckily, Jim ended up finding two shoes in a garbage can. That’s the pair that he’s wearing in the photo. But one of the shoes was too big, so he had to wear an extra sock. Wearing these shoes, Jim won two gold medals that day. This is a perfect reminder that you don’t have to resign to the excuses that have held you back.

So what if life hasn’t been fair? What are you going to do about it today? Whatever you woke up with this morning; stolen shoes, ill health, failed relationships, don’t let it stop you from running your race. You can experience more in life if you’ll get over the excuses and get on with living. You can have reasons or you can have results and you can’t have both. #lovethis#gotta#share#mindset

Once again…Charleston County chooses recreation over education as FY 2019 Budget is released

aThe 2019 Charleston County budget has been released and once again, distribution of funds is being is adversely related to the true needs of the county. Hidden behind a 504 page narrative, the focus of funding for the $240.7 million dollar budget is less on education, economic development and health/wellness than it is on culture and recreation.

Here is the breakdown of categorical funding:

  • General Government – $151.2 Million
  • Public Safety – $116.6 Million
  • Transfer Out – $82.4 Million
  • Debt Service – $75.6 Million
  • Public Works – $60.6 Million
  • Fund Balance – $39.5 Million
  • Culture / Recreation – $36.3 Million
  • Judicial – $32.2 Million
  • Health / Welfare – $15.1 Million
  • Education – $7.4 Million
  • Economic Development – $5.1 Million

Once again, Health / Welfare, Education and Economic Development round out the bottom of funding and if combined ($27.6 Million), all three categories still fall short of Culture / Recreation by $10.6 Million). As we continue to examine why education in South Carolina ranks in the lower 10% year after year, we do not have to look far to find answers.

Where is the money coming from?

  • Sales Tax – $203.9 Million
  • Property Tax – $165.1 Million
  • Charges / Fees – $126.5 Million
  • Intergovt – $42.5 Million
  • Fund Balance – $33.5 Million
  • Transfer In – $30.0 Million
  • Licenses / Payments – $5.2 Million
  • Miscellaneous – $4.4 Million
  • Debt Proceeds – $3.6 Million
  • Interest – $3.5 Million
  • Fines / Forfeitures – $1.7 Million
  • Leases / Rentals – $0.7 Million

If the Sales Tax number strikes you as quite high, it is because Charleston County has the highest sales tax rate in the state of South Carolina at 9.0%

A few excerpts from the narrative

  • Given the growth, there was an 80% decrease in number of roads inspected from FY 2017 (351) to FY 2018 (69)
  • Charleston County population growth decreased (percentage) from FY 2017 (1.8%) to FY 2018 (1.23%)
  • Permits issued: FY 2017 – 11,928 / FY 2018 – 11,853 / Projection: FY 2019 – 12,000
  • Veteran Affairs Office Visits/Contacts – FY 2017 – 28,087 / FY 2018 – 42,566 (52% increase)
  • Library Goals: Open 2 new libraries in 2018, and begin construction on 3 new libraries – Decline in library visits: FY 2017 – 1,670,712 / FY 2018 – 1,543,027
  • Number of active voters declined: FY 2017 – 286,008 / FY 2018 – 269,445

About U.S. Army SFC Matthew Weise |U.S. Army SFC Matthew Weise joined the army two weeks after graduating high school in Stone Mountain, Ga. He dedicated more than 15 years of his life to serving his country with six deployments, including Afghanistan and Iraq.

Matthew was injured during three of his combat tours. His third major injury occurred in Afghanistan when he stepped on a dismounted IED.

Matthew suffers from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) as well as depression, migraines and vertigo along with seizures, neck, knee, wrist and back problems. CHARLESTON, SC – January 18, 2019 – Charleston Acceleration Academy (CAA) recently celebrated their first graduate, Malik Fraiser, on January 16, 2019. Malik attends Charleston Acceleration Academy (CAA), which is part of the nationally accredited Acceleration Academies Network. Acceleration Academies provides students who have disengaged from their school districts an innovative approach to graduation and post secondary options.

Malik began his high school experience at North Charleston High School but found himself lacking the motivation to participate in his classes and also making poor decisions that would have a negative impact on his future. Eventually, Malik stopped attending school altogether. He was out of school nearly a year and a half when a team member from CAA visited his home to discuss a new option to complete high school and earn his diploma. Shortly after that visit, Malik visited the CAA website and signed up forthe program. Malik describes the CAA team as a “supportive family” who constantly motivated and pushed him to cross the finish line. For students like Malik,

At his graduation on Wednesday, Malik was surrounded by classmates and educators from his previous school as well as new friends and teachers from CAA. Together, they celebrated his graduation and a scholarship that he earned from CAA partner, Trident Technical College. Malik plans to use that scholarship to earn a degree in business and culinary arts. Though his supportive experience at CAA, Malik is optimistic about his future with a clear path to a career and goal of owning his own property.
