Something in the Way She Moves – Why Women are the Key to Happiness

By Mark A. Leon

As a man, I can say comfortably that we are simple folk. We have simple common ways of thinking, actions and thought. We are the hunters and gatherers, the quiet communicators, the competitive spirits and the comforting companions. We think sensibly and act progressively. We are the backbone and the cornerstone of progress, but history will dictate, as well as the future, that we are billions of empty souls wondering aimlessly through life without the blood that makes our heart pump.

That blood with its nutrients and fortified vitamins of life is the women that gives us the guidance, confidence and strength.

Women are:

  • Irrational (in such a good way.  It leads to disruption, then change, then innovation)
  • Emotional
  • Passionate
  • Intuitive
  • Nurturing
  • Comforting and protective
  • Strong
  • Emotionally centered while always thinking outside the box
  • Crazy and neurotic in a way that makes them irresistible
  • Sexy
  • Scholarly
  • Heroes without the need for recognition
  • Patient to our needs
  • Prepared in times of danger
  • Always there with open arms

When I think about the women in my life, from infancy to adulthood, so many flash through the theater inside my head. From mothers, to sisters, to teachers, to girlfriends, to lovers, to companions, to friends, to strangers and beyond.

Each one has left something behind.  Something meaningful that has sculpted my entire being.

Let me be the first to say, women are crazy. Crazy in the amazing, cannot stop thinking about them kind of way.  Some in their words and others in their actions.

There isn’t a decision in my life that has not been powered by the influence of a woman.  Think about every aspect of your life.

What does your life entail?

  • Careers
  • Goals
  • Dreams
  • Sports
  • Family
  • Education
  • Hobbies
  • Travel
  • Dating / Marriage / Partnership
  • Friendship
  • Arts (Writing / Photography / Film / Theater)
  • Nurturing (Hospitals / Clinics / Nurses)
  • Teamwork

How many of the above bullet points in your life are heavily influenced or assisted by the hand of a woman?

I thought so.

Why then do I still continue to hear so many stories of corporate prejudice, domestic violence, divorce, social inequity, emotional withdrawal and genders divided?

I wish I knew the answer, but unfortunately, like so many of my fellow inhabitants of this earth, we are lost for a resolution.

I am going to leave you with this:

Love is the defining core of the good in humanity.  It is a simple gesture, a warm thought, a kind act.  It is as easy as the feel of a human touch and as lasting as the depths of the universe.  Accept the perfection that is in women and embrace all they have to offer.

They are our reason for living and the core of our being.

When you find a woman that is beautiful inside and out and she gives herself to you in some capacity, accept, embrace and give back equally.

You will find yourself in a much better place in the end.

Is this the worst street in Charleston?

Just two blocks from two multi-million dollar developments on Meeting Street, a few minute walk to the Dewberry Hotel that asks upwards of $500 – $600 a night, a stone throw from the illustrious Cooper River Bridge and the mainstay Marion Square is Cooper Street on the East Side of Charleston.  With its burnt down and boarded up homes, garage clustering the sidewalks, unkempt yards and no trespassing signs, this street could be a symbol of the poverty that Charleston is masking from the public as it thrusts itself into a renaissance of prosperity and profit.

How can a street so close to a city thriving in all directions, be so neglected?  This is a only one of many streets and neighborhoods damaged by time and yearning for support or subject to future demolition to make room for the future 5 star city experience of the Jewel of the South.  There are many questions that need to be be addressed?

  • Is the city ill-equipped to assist or are they just choosing to let these neighborhoods rot away until they are taken over?
  • Is there a racial and/or economic struggle within the underbelly of the community?
  • What is the cost of prosperity vs. the cost of fixing the infrastructure and the lives of locals who have called this place home for generations?
  • Is this home work 137K?
  • Or this for 595K
  • Is there room to turn these neighborhoods around or is the end near?

This morning, we walked this street, that to the naked eye, looks like it has been left to die in a wasteland of neglect.

We welcome your thoughts.

To The Bravery and Courage of Those Fallen – Reflections of Memorial Day

This weekend is a time of reflection and remembrance to those that gave the ultimate sacrifice.  A life of honor is a life fulfilled.  Each one of those men and women that dedicated their lives to a great unknown with the sole purpose of giving us the freedom to breathe the air of freedom, we will not forget you.  Sometimes pictures say all the words you need.

To those brave individuals that carry on the legacy of those fallen, we stand beside you with pride and hope, so that one day, you may never need to fight again.

To all the mothers, fathers, children, aunts, uncles, grandparents, and great-grandparents that gave their mind, body and soul to raising the flag of hope for a better tomorrow, we share in your fears and keep you deep in our prayers.

In the midst of battle, in the roar of conflict, they found the serenity of death. I have one sentiment for soldiers living and dead: cheers for the living; tears for the dead.” —Robert G. Ingersoll

The Conservancy and the city are creating a detailed master plan and design for a combined 10.5-mile stretch of the Greenway and Bikeway. “This is an exciting opportunity to be part of transforming a significant public space that connects so many neighborhoods in the City of Charleston,” said Harry Lesesne, executive director of the Charleston Parks Conservancy. “We’re looking forward to working with the public on ideas and inspiration as to how we can make the West Ashley Bikeway and Greenway even more inviting.”

The Charleston East Side Has a New Kid on the Block: Eastside Bagel and they pack a killer breakfast/lunch punch

The Charleston East Side Community has a new player in the breakfast and lunch game and they have a delicious message.  Jesse Warnock and Eric Mills opened Eastside Bagel with one simple mission, great, fun breakfast and lunch with a little flare.  This harmonious little shop located at 8-D Line Street has a little front yard with a few chairs, tables on the sidewalk, a free library by the front steps and enough inside space for about six people.  Yet, what you walk out with is much more important.

Donned with old school stickers all over the counter and walls, Simpsons framed art, Babe Ruth on the wall and a Deion Sanders Yankees card by the sugar packets, this eclectic eatery brings a twist to the Charleston scene, steamed bagels and a whole lot of smiles.

From the French Toast Bagel to the Eddie Vedger to the Caprese in the U.S.A., Eric and Jesse have created an environment and culture of neighborhood fun, great food and an inviting urban appeal.

Their Story

Long time Pals, Eric Mills and Jesse Warnock have always abided by the bagel.  Yes, they have eaten their fair share of bagel sandwiches.  But then, in 2018, they decided to obey the calling of the bagel by creating a bagel sandwich shop with the most delicious of bagels where everyone is welcome.

Eastside Bagel is a creative & casual eatery, serving funky steamed bagel sandwiches made from scratch.  And it is a treat.

About Eastside Bagel

Charleston’s Original, one-of-a-kind, steamed bagel sandwich

Welcome to Eastside Bagel, home of Charleston’s original steamed bagel sandwich.  It should be noted that this is NOT just another bagel sandwich.   With menu selections inspired from childhood through more recent experiences basking in the culinary greatness that is Charleston, SC, we have created sandwiches that we love to eat and, hopefully, you will too. Originated in NYC, made famous at Oxford, Ohio’s Bagel & Deli, the magic of the steamed bagel knows very few boundaries.  We’ve never tasted a more lighthearted slice of turkey or a meltier piece of cheese.  And the bagel.  Ah…the bagel.  Soft on the inside with just the perfect texture on the outside.  What we’re trying to say is that this stuff is good.  And you should try it.  Have a nice day.

Come out an experience Eastside Bagel, we know you will be back for more.
