Navy to Christen Littoral Combat Ship Charleston

The Navy will christen its newest Independence-variant littoral combat ship, the future USS Charleston (LCS 18), during a 10 a.m. CDT ceremony Saturday, August 26, in Mobile, Alabama.

The future USS Charleston, designated LCS 18, honors Charleston, the second-largest city in South Carolina. She will be the sixth ship to be named for Charleston.

The Honorable Richard V. Spencer, Secretary of the Navy, will deliver the ceremony’s principal address. Charlotte Riley, the wife of ten-term, former Mayor of Charleston Joe Riley, serves as the ship’s sponsor. The ceremony will be highlighted by Mrs. Riley breaking a bottle of sparkling wine across the bow to formally christen the ship, a time-honored Navy tradition.

“I am honored to be here as we christen the newest LCS, the future USS Charleston,” said the Honorable Richard V. Spencer, Secretary of the Navy. “Charleston, like the other ships in the LCS program, is going to be highly maneuverable, able to operate where other ships cannot, and will project power through forward presence. The ship and her crew will serve our nation for decades to come, but let us not forget our industrial force whose service makes this great ship possible. I am grateful for the men and women of Austal for their dedication, and to the citizens of Mobile for their support, as we continue to make our Navy stronger.”

The name Charleston has a long and storied history in the U.S. Navy. The first Navy ship to bear the name Charleston was a row galley that defended the coast of South Carolina during the Quasi-War with France. The second Charleston (C-2) was a protected cruiser that received the surrender of Guam during the Spanish-American War. The third Charleston (C-22) was a St. Louis-class protected cruiser that performed escort and troop transport duties in World War I. The ship named Charleston (PG-51) was an Erie-class patrol gunboat that earned the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with one battle star for her service in the northern Pacific during World War II. The fifth Charleston (AKA-113/LKA-113) was an amphibious cargo ship that served during the Vietnam War.

The future USS Charleston is a fast, agile, focused-mission platform designed for operation in near-shore environments yet capable of open-ocean operation. It is designed to defeat asymmetric “anti-access” threats such as mines, quiet diesel submarines and fast surface craft.

The LCS class consists of two variants, the Freedom variant and the Independence variant, designed and built by two industry teams. The Freedom variant team is led by Lockheed Martin (for the odd-numbered hulls, e.g. LCS 1). The Independence variant team is led by Austal USA (for LCS 6 and the subsequent even-numbered hulls).

Each LCS seaframe will be outfitted with a single mission package made up of mission modules containing warfighting systems and support equipment. A dedicated ship crew will combine with aviation assets to deploy manned and unmanned vehicles and sensors in support of mine countermeasures, anti-submarine warfare or surface warfare missions.

The ceremony can be viewed on the Navy Live blog at http://navylive.dodlive.mil.

Scientists discover species of dolphin that existed along South Carolina coast

CHARLESTON (South Carolina), Aug. 23, 2017 – Continuing to uncover fossil evidence along the coast of South Carolina, researchers, led by a faculty member at College of Charleston, have discovered a species of extinct dolphin. The toothless dolphin, which lived about 28-30 million years ago, provides new evidence of the evolution of feeding behavior in whales (which includes dolphins).

The species, named Inermorostrum xenops, lived during the same period as Coronodon havensteini, a species of ancient whale announced recently by investigators at New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine and College of Charleston in Current Biology.

The skull of Inermorostrum was discovered by a diver in the Wando River in Charleston, just miles from the location where Coronodon’s remains were found, and presents the first clear evidence of suction feeding in echolocating sea mammals. The researchers estimate that the dolphin grew to be only four feet long, smaller than its closest relatives, and significantly smaller than today’s bottlenose dolphins, which measure seven to twelve feet in length.

The study has been released in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

According to College of Charleston adjunct geology professor Robert W. Boessenecker, Ph.D., the dwarf dolphin had a short snout and entirely lacked teeth. The genus name, Inermorostrum xenops, means “defenseless snout”, referring to its toothless condition. Boessenecker, the lead author of the study, believes that the suction-feeding dolphin fed primarily on fish, squid, and other soft-bodied invertebrates from the seafloor, similar to the feeding behavior of a walrus. Furthermore, a series of deep channels and holes for arteries on the snout indicate the presence of extensive soft tissues, likely enlarged lips, and also perhaps even whiskers.

“We studied the evolution of snout length in cetaceans, and found that during the Oligocene (25-35 million years ago) and early Miocene epochs (20-25 million years ago), the echolocating whales rapidly evolved extremely short snouts and extremely long snouts, representing an adaptive radiation in feeding behavior and specializations,” says Boessenecker. “We also found that short snouts and long snouts have both evolved numerous times on different parts of the evolutionary tree — and that modern dolphins like the bottlenose dolphin, which have a snout twice as long as it is wide, represent the optimum length as it permits both fish catching and suction feeding.”

Research team member, Jonathan Geisler, Ph.D., chair of the Anatomy Department and associate professor at NYITCOM, says the discovery is an important step in understanding why the South Carolina Coast provides unique insights into cetacean evolution.

“Coronodon, a filter feeder whale, and Inermorostrum, a suction feeding dolphin, may well have fed on the same prey. Their feeding behaviors not only help us understand their vastly different body sizes, but also shed light on the ecology of habitats that led to Charleston’s present-day fossil riches,” says Geisler.

Dr. Danielle Fraser, a paleontologist at the Canadian Museum of Nature and also part of the research team, notes that the identification of Inermorostrum opens up new questions about the evolution of early whales. “The discovery of a suction feeding whale this early in their evolution is forcing us to revise what we know about how quickly new forms appeared, and what may have been driving early whale evolution” she explains. “Increased ocean productivity may have been one important factor,” she says.

Many species of Oligocene whales have been described from South Carolina, with several discovered in and around Charleston. The area is among a few in the world, including others in New Zealand, Japan, and the Pacific Northwest, to offer a window into early toothed whale evolution.

Inermorostrum xenops is now on display in the Mace Brown Museum of Natural History at College of Charleston, reunited with its prehistoric neighbor Coronodon havensteini.

What To Do With Your Leftover Solar Eclipse Glasses

Solar eclipse glasses. We all have them. The big event is over, so what do we do with them now? We came up with a few ideas for you.

What to do with your leftover Solar Eclipse Glasses

  1. Turn them into your new sleep mask.
  2. Keep those eyes super shaded when sunning on the beach or at the pool.
  3. Ensure whomever is “it” is not cheating while counting during hide-n-seek.
  4. Donate them to kids in South America. (Yes, it is a real thing! astronomerswithoutborders.org)
  5. Cut the dark lenses out and wear the cardboard frames as a super cool pair of “shade-free” shades.
  6. Tuck them away until the next solar eclipse. 2024 is not that far away.
  7. Use them to correct that slightly off kilter bar stool.
  8. Add them to your hangover kit for maximum darkness.
  9. Proudly display them in a frame to commemorate the 2017 event.
  10. Turn them into a picture frame by replacing the lenses with your favorite eclipse photos.

Have any more ideas? We would love to hear them!  Please leave a comment below.

Charleston Love Story – Original Poem

By Mark A. Leon

Torn by this Southern sky, between sun and moon
Dancing in the moonlight
Making love to the rising sun in the back of my pick-up truck

Nothing but my white tee-shirt and your bikini top keeping us from this summer heat

I’m from the other side of the tracks, but our love is right on track

Two young Southern lovers careless and free
Wild like the stallions
Wholesome as a willow tree

With nothing but Luke Bryan on the radio and a Folly sunset in my dreams
I want to rock your world, my precious Southern girl

Tip that cowboy hat, kick that two step and away we go
Sunflowers up to our knees and an orchestra of church bells all around
Our prom in the country

Take my hand and enter this V8 carriage
Driving from the coastal waters to the cotton fields with the top down and the wind cooling our faces
We are infinite

It’s an endless journey down Highway 26 to the curves of the Savannah coastal
Nothing can go wrong with my Southern charm by my side

At night, when the thunder roars and the lightning strikes, we will be naked under the sheets, with you by my side
Laughing and kissing until the night tames our souls

You will be mine forever
Under the Lord’s sky, I pledge my love to you
I’ll work the land to give you a castle
With dirt between these toes, I’ll show you a world of magic

A house on the water
Honeymoon in the mountains
Touching the clouds like angels in the sky

And when we’re old and grey sitting on the front porch, I’m gonna remember my country girl like the day we met

Eyes so blue
Hair as gold as the sunlight
Wholesome and free
A dreamer, more beautiful than a thousand roses

Once again, with this feeble soul on bended knee I will promise this, “I’m so blessed to have found a love like this”

New In Town: Flavorful Grits and Rolled Ice-Cream: Restaurant Reviews

Article and Photo Credit to Alyssa Zaponski

As Charleston grows, plenty of restaurants are popping up to feed its hungry inhabitants. This past week, I had the pleasure of checking out two new spots. The first is Grace and Grit, located at the foot of the Bridge in Mount Pleasant. The building itself is eye-catching from the moment you pull into the parking lot. The building is modern, sleek, and enticing. The outdoor patio is lined with tables and features a lounge area as well. The first thing I noticed inside was a table near the bar. It displayed different flavored jams, crackers, and sweet tea. It’s important to note that if you want to sit inside, make a reservation.

The locally-inspired menu features grit flavors in two categories: The Grit (pimento cheese, gumbo, brussels pesto, and homemade bacon) and The Grace (peaches n cream, blueberry, local brie, and truffle). These are ordered a la carte or added to a Chef’s Creation dish. I enjoyed mine smothered in Grace and Grit’s shrimp and veggies. Talk about a must-try food!

If you aren’t interested in seafood, or grits, you can find as much flavor in their Buttermilk Fried Chicken. The seasonings here were unlike anything I’ve had in a fried food. It was filling but didn’t leave me feeling grease-filled or gross. Try with a side of bacon creamed corn.

If you’re still hungry, try their spin on the grilled Caesar salad. Instead of chopped lettuce in a bowl, Grace and Grit slices their romaine in half before tossing it on the grill. It’s then dressed with traditional anchovy Caesar. Who knew those creepy little fish could taste so good?

A new spot on Lower King street creates one of social media’s newest obsessions: rolled ice cream. When you first see Ice and Pan, you may think you’re in the wrong spot. The storefront and window signage is dingy, at best.  Yet, what their exterior is lacking, the interior makes up for. Inside, artist Colette Miller has painted a stunning mural of technicolor angel wings. If you wait your turn, you can jump in for a picture with them.

One of the best parts of Ice & Pan is the Plexiglas window which allows patrons to watch the magic happen. Even at 2:00 pm on a Tuesday, I had to fight for a spot to see the employees do their thing. In fact, it was so busy that it took almost 55 minutes for my order to appear. So, if you’re going to stop by Ice and Pan, make sure to clear your schedule first.

The ice cream flavors are as unique as the technique used to make it: coco pineapple, salty caramel latte, matcha madness, cookie monster, pistachio, and more! Each bowl comes with your flavor, three toppings, whipped cream, and a drizzle!

If you’re not into the craze, you can instead get a variety of specialty drinks – some even come in a large light bulb. Yes, you read that correctly: a light bulb. There’s no lack of options in the array of milk teas, bubble teas, espresso teas, fresh teas, and smoothies. Bonus Points: the wait for these treats is significantly shorter.

Fast & Healthy Breakfasts for Busy Mornings

For most of us, preparing a balanced breakfast from scratch is far from the first thing on our minds when we wake up in the morning. Many of us end up up grabbing the first thing in sight on our way to the office or skipping it altogether.

While skipping breakfast occasionally won’t do too much harm for healthy, active adults, a nourishing meal at the start of your day can have a variety of awesome benefits, including sustained energy, focus and a feeling of well-being throughout the day.  Eating a nutrient-rich and well-balanced breakfast is also a great way to prime yourself to make healthy choices throughout the day, and can help prevent overeating later.

To make squeezing in that healthy weekday breakfast easier, we’ve rounded up fast, balanced and hassle-free breakfasts you can make in under ten minutes.

1. Greek Yogurt with Fresh Fruit

Protein-packed Greek yogurt with fresh fruit is a fast and easy breakfast staple for busy people. Protein takes longer to digest and helps curb appetites for hours, and one cup of Greek yogurt can contain between 20–25 grams! To pull together this dish, cube up  fresh fruitthe night before, then top with ⅔ cup low-fat Greek yogurt.  Top with nuts, chia seeds, flaxmeal or hemp seeds for a boost of fiber and healthy fats. Breakfast no-brainer!

2. Eggs and Avocado Toast

Eggs are a quick, nutritious option for any omnivore. They’re a natural source of high-quality, complete protein, with 6-7 grams of protein per egg. They also provide 13 essential vitamins and minerals, such as selenium and B vitamins.

Scramble or poach an egg and enjoy on top of a slice of fiber-rich multigrain toast, topping it with a few slices of avocado for healthy fats and baby greens for flavor and vitamins C & A.  If you are on a wheat-free diet, you can choose a gluten-free bread option or a corn tortilla instead.

3. Overnight Oats

For a filling morning boost of vitamins and fibers, overnight oatmeal is a balanced choice that can be flavored with just about any fresh or frozen fruit and milk. Oats, a soluble fiber-rich whole grain, will keep you satisfied and even-keeled throughout the morning.

Prep your 5-minute overnight oats the night before and voila: just grab them from your fridge on your way out the door the next morning.  For an extra healthy fats and protein, top them with 1–2 teaspoons of nuts, nut butter or flaxseed.

Recipe Inspiration:

4. Toast + Nut Butter + Fresh Fruit

Natural nut butters such as peanut, almond or cashew are fantastic sources of healthy fats and plant-based protein, which, when paired with a whole grain toast, provide you with a complete protein to fuel your morning.  Instead of sugary jam, try topping your toast with fresh fruit slices, chia seeds, hemp seeds, cinnamon and cocoa powder. PB&J is definitely not just for kids!

5. Smart Smoothies

Smoothies make fantastic fast and nutritious breakfasts that are portable and rich in protein, fiber and micronutrients.

Try this peanut butter and jelly smoothie, blending frozen strawberries for the familiar PB&J effect without the added sugars. Banana provides fiber and potassium, spinach provides iron and vitamin C, and yogurt adds protein — a key component for staying satiated throughout the day — (for a total of 18 grams per serving).

Don’t like peanut butter? Try this 5-minute coconut smoothie instead, which sneaks in kale, fiber-rich mango, superfood flaxseed and high-protein cottage cheese for a whopping 17g protein per serving.

6. Make-Ahead Chia Seed Pudding

Chia pudding is like morning yogurt with a dairy-free, chewy twist. It only takes a couple of minutes to prep, but needs to be made the night before so it can bulk up a bit in the fridge overnight.

Blend ¼ cup chia seeds with 1 cup almond milk or a non-dairy milk alternative, blend with cinnamon, vanilla and honey and let sit overnight. Then simply top with fresh fruit in the AM.

To get started, try this balanced chia seed pudding recipe, which contains 5 grams of protein, 12 grams fiber, 43% of the recommended daily calcium intake, and plant-based omega-3 fats from chia seeds.

7. Avocado Toast with a Twist

Avocado toast makes an easy, delicious plant-based breakfast in under five minutes.  All you need is a solid slice of 100% whole-grain bread (or a gluten-free alternative, if needed), and ¼ to ⅓  of a mashed avocado.

Instead of adding an egg, you can try a variety of other savory and sweet toppings. For example, this tangy recipe for strawberry avocado toast with feta cheese offers 6 grams of fiber, 4 grams of protein and a nice dose of healthy fats from the avocado.

Recipe Inspiration:

8. Greek Yogurt Spread on Toast

Protein-rich Greek yogurt doesn’t have to be eaten with a spoon. Use it as a spread on fiber-rich whole grain toast, tortillas or puffed whole grain cakes for a quick and fun breakfast.

Love sweet breakfasts? Spread ¼ cup Greek yogurt on a sturdy piece of toast, then top it with sliced strawberries, bananas, honey and walnuts. If you like your breakfast a bit more savory, top your Greek yogurt toast with sliced tomatoes, cucumbers, chopped herbs, lemon juice and olive oil drizzle.

Some Crazy Theories and Rumors About the Total Eclipse in Charleston

By Mark A. Leon

  • The famous South Carolina Lizard Man may appear during the Eclipse. For those of you not from these parts, South Carolina has its own version of Bigfoot or the Jersey Devil.  The size, look and species of this beast has never been consistently identified, but many swear to sightings. The 2017 Solar Eclipse has spurred rumors that the Lizard Man may rise once again to terrorize the people of South Carolina
  • Above normal paranormal activity in and around the city – Charleston is known for is ghosts and paranormal activities. Some are speculating this once in a lifetime event may cause a spike in paranormal activity.  Good thing we have Bill Murray.
  • Aliens are planning a massive brainwashing as millions across the country all look up at once. This is a wild theory, but for a short window of time, millions of Americans will be looking up.  What if a highly-advanced alien race planned this celestial event to send sensors through our eyes and brainwash us into becoming Universal slaves?  Is it really that far-fetched?
  • The eclipse will cause a break in the time continuum and shoot us back in time and land us just prior to the Civil War – For those who live in the world of Dr. Who and believe time travel is possible, this could be the time when fantasy and reality become one. With recent surfacing of white nationalist activity, could this be an indication of a break in time sending us all back?
  • It may rain and cause everyone to miss the phenomenon. Maybe the most realistic and terrifying of the rumors.  We may have the unwelcome guests of clouds and rain ruining the most anticipated event of the year in Charleston.
  • The ocean and harbor could see a massive rise causing flooding across the entire Lowcountry. We are just used to that.
  • The one true love of Edgar Allan Poe, Annabel Lee will rise from her unmarked grave in the rumored spot in the Unitarian Church Cemetery and appear once again.
