Newberry College, a private, residential, co-educational institution with a diverse student population, partnered with The Ritedose Corporation to launch a new Pharmaceutical Manufacturing program.

South Carolina’s life sciences sector, including biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and healthcare, is experiencing rapid growth, creating a need for a highly trained workforce. Dr. Jerry Alewine, Dean of Nursing and Health Sciences at Newberry College, identified the opportunity to develop an academic program aligned with the needs of the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry. The partnership with Ritedose, a leader in pharmaceutical manufacturing, was a natural fit.

“Our partnership with Newberry College represents a forward-thinking approach to education and workforce development,” said Bob Sikora, Senior Director of Quality Assurance at Ritedose. “By combining our industry expertise with Newberry College’s academic framework, we are able to offer a program that prepares students for the challenges of the pharmaceutical manufacturing world. This collaboration is an investment in the future of the industry, ensuring that students graduate with the skills and knowledge they need to thrive.”

The Pharmaceutical Manufacturing program – a 30-hour bachelor’s program open to students with associate degrees – will consist of 10 asynchronous courses, focused on quality, compliance, and process optimization. Ritedose’s team of industry experts has shaped the curriculum, ensuring that students are exposed to real-world knowledge. Courses such as “Sterile Procedures” and “FDA Guidelines for Pharmaceutical Manufacturers” will give students a deep understanding of industry standards and regulations.

“The collaboration with Ritedose has been instrumental in the development of this program,” said Tracy Cook, Director of Health Sciences at Newberry College. “By working together, we are able to offer a truly unique educational experience. Ritedose’s expertise ensures that our students are not only learning the fundamentals but are also gaining an understanding of the key issues that professionals face in the field. This partnership allows Newberry College to enter a new market and become the first institution in South Carolina to offer this specialized program.”

“The partnership with Newberry College is a perfect example of how businesses and academic institutions can collaborate to meet industry needs,” added Sikora. “Together, we are not only helping to develop a skilled workforce but also ensuring that South Carolinaremains at the forefront of pharmaceutical manufacturing innovation.”

Building Hope: The Michaels Organization, One80 Place and Spandrel Development Partners building a 70-unit community in Charleston, SC dedicated to affordable housing for homeless and domestic violence survivors

Excited to share progress on The Michaels Organization’s latest project: a 70-unit LIHTC community in partnership with One80 Place, dedicated to serving the homeless population in Charleston, SC. This development includes temporary living dorms for survivors of domestic violence, reflecting our commitment to creating safe and supportive housing solutions.

Site work is underway and progressing on schedule, thanks to our incredible local partners—Choate Construction as our general contractor and LS3P as the architect. Together, they are building more than housing; we’re building hope.

Details about the Project

The Michaels Organization, working in partnership with One80 Place and Spandrel Development Partners, is set to transform a vacant lot in downtown Charleston into much-needed permanent, affordable housing exclusively serving homeless individuals and families, after successfully achieving a financial closing for 573 Meeting Street.

The development is the result of a collaborative effort between Michaels, the nation’s largest private-sector owner of affordable housing, Spandrel, a multi-disciplined real estate development firm, and One80 Place, one of the largest providers of services to people moving out of homelessness in South Carolina.

“We are thrilled to reach this milestone for 573 Meeting Street and we are grateful for the support of the city, the state, and all our partners,” said Bruce Morgan, Senior Vice President of Development at The Michaels Organization. “This development exemplifies what the public, private, and non-profit sectors can accomplish when working together to create high-quality, service-enhanced affordable housing solutions that enhance communities and lift lives.”

The planned development will maximize a vacant parcel within One80 Place’s homeless and supportive services campus in one of historic Charleston’s most dynamic neighborhoods. The six-story, mixed-use development will be a permanent home for 70 formerly homeless individuals, and the second floor will be a new family shelter for 65 women and parents with their children.

“We believe that our community’s most vulnerable neighbors deserve the best of what Charleston has to offer. Housing built specifically to support people moving out of homelessness is critical to ending homelessness, once and for all,” said Stacey Denaux, One80 Place’s CEO. “The impact of this project will be profound and long-lasting.”

Spandrel Development’s Co-founder, Emanuel D. Neuman said: “After seven years of planning, we are very excited to see this development now poised to start construction and to make One80 Place’s vision for this transformative community a reality.” Sprandel has developed several communities in Charleston, including two on Meeting Street.

At 573 Meeting Street, One80 Place will offer comprehensive supportive services to the residents including case management, healthcare, tenancy support, and legal services. Residents will earn no more than 50% of HUD area median income (AMI) and spend no more than 30% of their income on rent.

Financing for the $44 million development was made possible through 4% low-income housing tax credits, tax-exempt bonds allocated by the South Carolina State Housing Finance and Development Authority, funding from the City of Charleston through the Charleston Redevelopment Corporation, the CLIMB fund, Charleston County,  South Carolina Housing Trust Fund and generous private donations to One80 Place.

The City of Charleston Housing Authority has committed project-based rental assistance for all 70 rental units, ensuring long-term affordability for residents.

Development team partners include LS3P as the architect and Choate Construction as the General Contractor. Berkadia and Monarch invested in the federal and state tax credits with TD Bank providing the construction loan and Berkadia/Freddie Mac providing the permanent mortgage loan. Michaels will provide property and investment management services, ensuring the community remains a long-term asset to the neighborhood.

Medal of Honor Values Take Center Stage at Groundbreaking Leadership Training Hosted by the Mt. Pleasant-Based Nonprofit

National Medal of Honor Center for Leadership launches inaugural training with welcome from two of the 61 living Medal of Honor recipients

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. — (Jan. 17, 2025) The National Medal of Honor Center for Leadership, headquartered in Mt. Pleasant, S.C., hosted “Building High-Trust, High-Performing Teams: Overcoming Challenges Through Core Values,” its inaugural leadership training with the Henderson Fire Department in Henderson, Nev., on Jan. 15-16, 2025. The training kicked off with a welcome address from two of the 61 living Medal of Honor recipients, Earl Plumlee and Leroy Petry, both of the War on Terrorism-Afghanistan.

Over the two-day training, the Center for Leadership trained more than 100 fire and police department staff with the goals to strengthen teamwork and address challenges by embracing the six core Medal of Honor values, which include courage, sacrifice, patriotism, citizenship, integrity and commitment.

“The training provided an opportunity to not only explore the challenges teams face but to also see how the core Medal of Honor values can be applied to overcome those obstacles,” says Medal of Honor recipient Earl Plumlee. “By emphasizing these values, the program equips leaders to build stronger, more cohesive teams that can thrive in even the most demanding environments.”

The training incorporated a dynamic blend of offerings, including interactive storytelling sessions led by Medal of Honor recipients, scenario-based workshops addressing common team dysfunctions, and opportunities for participants to develop actionable leadership strategies. Participants explored essential leadership themes such as building trust, embracing productive conflict, fostering commitment, promoting accountability and aligning team goals for collective success.

“Leadership is about inspiring others to achieve more than they thought possible,” says Medal of Honor recipient Leroy Petry. “The Medal of Honor values are the foundation for leaders who want to create a meaningful impact on their teams and communities.”

The program received high praise from Henderson Fire Department Chief Scott Vivier, who highlighted the relevance of the training to his team’s mission. “The Medal of Honor values align perfectly with the principles we strive to uphold as first responders,” says Chief Scott Vivier. “This training was transformative for our department and will have a lasting impact on how we serve our community.”

The training was held at the East Police Station, located at 223 Lead St., Henderson, Nev. 89015.

“This is just the beginning of our journey to inspire leaders across the nation,” says Thomas Mundell, president and CEO of the Center for Leadership. “By sharing the timeless lessons of Medal of Honor recipients, we aim to equip individuals and teams with the tools they need to be successful leaders.”

Looking ahead, the Center for Leadership will continue to expand its offerings through a comprehensive series of nationwide trainings and events, both virtual and in-person, to teach leadership skills and create a space for dialogue among Medal of Honor recipients. The Center’s leadership program will offer a broad range of courses, materials and experiences to learners at different stages of their leadership journey—whether in a boardroom, a classroom or their personal lives. The Center for Leadership has plans to build a 50,000-square-foot training center and immersive visitor experience at Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina. Pure Theatre’s The Shark Is Broken packs a satisfying crowd pleasing bite

A gratifying look at fame, addiction and isolation

Rarely are we able to look beyond the camera and see the nuances and interactions of the actors behind the scenes; out of character but in the moment.

The Shark Is Broken is a 90-minute one act exploration into the lives, fears, hopes and insecurities of Roy Scheider, Richard Dreyfuss and Robert Shaw, the three leading actors from the epic Steven Spielberg classic “Jaws”

During a tumultuous shoot, these three actors, from different backgrounds, come together in an explosive game of therapeutic discovery.

Rodney Lee Rogers immerses himself in the intellectually superior, alcoholic British persona of Robert Shaw.   His stunningly passionate and often emotionally spent portrayal was stunning to witness.  Throughout the performance Rogers exposes his demons about mortality and escapism in the bottle with an intensity so raw and powerful, it must be witnessed live.

David Mandel’ neurotic portrayal of Richard Dreyfuss is filled with unadulterated energy and care for character .  From the highs and lows, limitations in self-confidence to the blind ambition of fame, Mandel captures Dreyfuss with excellence with just a dash of humor at all the right times.

Finally, the 3 person cast is rounded out by R.W. Smith as the grounded voice of reason Roy Scheider.  Calm and collected, Smith plays the internalized observer and mediator of the trio neutralizing the rocky waters and keeping a sense of order during times of behind the scenes chaos.

Together these three actors keep you intrigued and captivated until the final scene amd the voice of Spielberg in the distance yell “cut”.

The script captures the feel of 1970’s American cinema, politics and lifestyle with a realism while slightly opening the door to what the future will bring.

Sharon Graci once again created a beautiful vision in direction, set design, mood and emotion.   As a founding member, director and actor, Sharon Graci places so much thought and collaborative insight into her vision and commitment to deliver a quality product to the audience. We applaud that.

One of the most impressive theatrical elements was the use of time.   Through spatial movement, lighting and shifts in actor location, we are able to move through different scenes and time in mere seconds maintaining a seamless flow for this one act play.

The Shark Is Broken is a wonderfully immersive evening of entertainment.   Rogers, Mandel and Smith deserve tremendous credit for not only bringing to life 3 celebrated actors in the American film, but uncovering their personal fears as they find genuine comfort with one another.

We highly recommend you see this play and spend an evening at Pure Theatre.

The Shark Is Broken is playing through February 8.  Click HERE for tickets.
