Downtown Restaurant Revamps Culinary Offerings Led By New Executive Chef

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Stars Grill Room has announced a new head chef, Daniel Wade, reigniting a wave of updates which began in September with the rebrand of the restaurant’s rooftop terrace now known as Satellite Bar.

Chef Daniel Wade’s culinary journey began working under a Michelin star chef in his home state of Texas. While he didn’t possess formal culinary schooling, Daniel quickly realized he had the backbone and passion to make the kitchen his home and committed to driving two and a half hours each day to gain valuable, hands-on experience from Chef Ken Wilkinson.

After honing his skills under the guidance of Chef Ken, Daniel ascended through the culinary ranks at various prestigious kitchens including the Baylor Club in McLane Stadium where he catered to gatherings of up to 2500 guests at a time. He then took on the role of executive sous chef at Barnett’s Whiskey House before assuming the position of executive chef at Moroso’s Fine Italian. In a true testament to his dedication, Daniel extended his culinary expertise to private dining experiences including whiskey pairings and wine dinners.

These kitchens provided him with opportunities to experience new techniques before Daniel opened his Argentinian live-fire pop-up in Waco. Without a kitchen, food truck, or brick-and-mortar, Daniel utilized the live fire and a few tables to share the locally-sourced vegetables and meat that he loved to cook – his favorite dish being smoked lamb shank over cactus grits.

When it was time to move on from the pop-up, Daniel threw a dart on a map and took a bold leap of faith to head south and serve as the executive chef at Stars Grill Room. Daniel’s goal is to bring Stars back to its original glory, introducing his extensive and diverse culinary experience to breathe new life into the space.

Stars Grill Room is located at 495 King St. Stay updated on upcoming announcements and offerings by visiting www.instagram.com/starsrestaurant.

Nonprofit Will Receive $50,000 in Grant Support and Virtual Leadership Training to

Advance Economic Mobility in the Lowcountry

CHARLESTON – Bank of America today announced Carolina Youth Development Center (CYDC) as the 2023 Neighborhood Champion® awardee for its work advancing economic mobility and building up underserved communities in the Lowcountry. Through this multi-year grant funding and leadership training for the nonprofits’ leadership, programs and services addressing child and family well-being will be expanded as the CYDC launches the Families First program – an evidence-based model focused on crisis prevention and family stabilization.

As part of the bank’s Neighborhood Builders program, one of the largest philanthropic investments into nonprofit leadership development in the nation, Neighborhood Champions provides funding and leadership training to nonprofits that are advancing economic mobility and building up underserved neighborhoods.

Through the program, CYDC will have the opportunity to receive virtual engagement and technical assistance coaching, participate in virtual leadership training delivered by experts in the nonprofit sector on topics like human capital management, increasing financial sustainability and storytelling and a $50,000 grant over two years.

Founded in 1790, CYDC is a direct descendant of the Charleston Orphan House, America’s first publicly funded orphanage. Today, CYDC provides programs reaching over 900 children, youth, and their families locally each year. It cares for young people who are victims of physical and sexual abuse, neglect and abandonment, as well as providing resources and support to area families at risk of having their children removed from their home.

CYDC will utilize the Neighborhood Champions to support the launch of the Families First program. The program is an intensive home-based service that teaches families new ways to interact that improve overall functioning. The impact of Families First on the community will be significant. This program will reduce trauma in families and children by keeping children in their homes. Trauma reduction and improved family function leads to better educational outcomes, decreased legal involvement, increased employment opportunities, and stronger communities.

“The Carolina Youth Development Center has been providing necessary services within the Charleston community for more than 230 years. We have adapted and evolved as an organization to meet the needs of the most vulnerable members of the community, and we are preparing to evolve once more,” said Beverly Hardin, CEO, CYDC. “Being named this year’s Bank of America Neighborhood Champion will allow the Center to launch the Families First program to reduce trauma in families and children by keeping children in their homes. This critical inflection point has the potential to change the trajectory of families and children’s lives in our community in unprecedented ways.”

The invitation-only program is highly competitive, and nonprofits are selected by a committee comprised of community leaders and past awardees. Five nonprofits have been named as Champions in the Charleston area since 2019, with the bank investing $250,000 into these nonprofits.

“Nonprofits like the Carolina Youth Development Center and all our past Neighborhood Champions are vital to solving social challenges, improving communities and promoting economic advancement,” said Mark Munn, president, Bank of America Charleston. “Providing these nonprofits with flexible funding and leadership training not only positions these nonprofits for sustainable, long-term success, but demonstrates our commitment to creating real change across the Lowcountry, where we live and work.”

Since 2004, Bank of America has invested more than $300 million in nearly 100 communities across the U.S., partnered with more than 1,600 nonprofits, and helped more than 3,000 nonprofit leaders strengthen their leadership skills through the Neighborhood Builders and Champions program.

EASTON PORTER GROUP DEBUTS COSTA* IN HISTORIC CHARLESTON

Costa*, an elegant ode to the Mediterranean shores of Italy, will open its doors in downtown Charleston next Thursday, November 16, with an innovative approach to coastal Italian cuisine, from Easton Porter Group – the family-owned boutique hospitality group behind beloved Charleston spots like Zero George, Cannon Green and Wild Common.

Costa* encompasses coastal Italian fare from Liguria to Amalfi and down to Sicily, with inventive global compositions and seasonal hints from the diverse regions – featuring fantasy dishes like handmade pasta and proteins like seafood, classic beef and pork. The experienced service teams, led by Chef Vinson Petrillo of The Restuarant at Zero George, are excited to deliver personally crafted dining experiences with technical expertise and whimsical nostalgia.Complementing the fresh and bold fare, the beverage program – designed by Easton Porter Group regional restaurant director Megan Mina –  stars craft cocktails, bubbling apertivi and globally sourced wines.

Costa* Restaurant & Bar is a vibrant testament to the fusion of coastal Italian culinary artistry – a seafood haven where the colors of the sea come alive in the design, decor and on the plates. We invites guests to savor and share delectable seafood, our handmade pastas, and specialty meat dishes.

We and our teams are thrilled to bring this unique epicurean experience to the heart of Charleston.”

Easton Porter Group Founders ~ Lynn Easton & Dean Porter Andrews

FROM ITALIAN COASTS TO COSTA

Chef Vinson has previously led some of New York’s finest restaurants – from Caviar Russe to Abe & Arthur’s, and Prospect, a Michelin Bib Gourmand recipient. Costa* will feature artfully crafted dishes like pecorino ravioli, Wagyu beef cheek tortellini with braised octopus, and Carabinero shrimp. With Charleston’s rich bounty of fresh seafood, local flavors are imparted in a raw bar, along with dishes like the raw red shrimp with Meyer lemon sorbet and Neonata shiso.

His dishes are drawn from his own Italian family’s traditions. The menu is meant to be shared among friends and family, both new and old. “Like clockwork, our family gathered around the table every Sunday for an Italian dinner. We’d all contribute to the meal, putting out dozens of dishes, sharing plates, and enjoying each other’s company. It was a special experience I look back on fondly, and I’m eager to offer our guests an environment as much as a meal meant to be savored,” says Chef Vinson.

 IN VINO VERITAS

Costa*’s curated beverage menu features a diverse wine list with over 350 bottles, including rare boutique varietals from regions across the globe, like Cerbaiona, Giuseppe Quintarelli and Bartolo Mascarello. Inspired by a love for the diversity of Italy’s wine regions and beyond, the wine program will focus on producers who prioritize thoughtful farming practices and intentional vinification.

The cocktail menu comprises apéritivi and digestivi influenced by Italian culture and a comprehensive roster of spritzes, each reminiscent of an Italian beach day. The spirits menu will highlight small producers who forage herbs, citrus and other ingredients carefully and handcraft their infusions and distillations. Traditional Italian spirits – aperitivi, vermouth, gin, amari and others – will complement seasonal and signature cocktails. Guests can also expect unique presentations such as a tableside amaro cart, showcasing the restaurant’s extensive selection of Amari that will elevate the after-dinner experience. The beverage menus are curated by Mina, drawing on several years of expertise leading Easton Porter Group’s wine and bar programs.

WHERE CAPRI MEETS CAROLINA

Easton Porter Group partnered with New York-based and James Beard Award restaurant architecture and design company Glen & Co. to create an interior that encapsulates sprezzatura, the studied practice of grace with ease. The ambiance remains light, breezy, and touched with whimsy, with floor-to-ceiling windows illuminating the natural, rich wood and pearlescent tile textures. The open kitchen concept transforms the dining room into a theater, with diners actively viewing the culinary artistry. Costa*’s serene interiors are accented by waterfront views of the Ashley River in Charleston’s iconic Harleston Village neighborhood.

Costa* is located at 320 Broad Street on the ground floor of The Jasper, the 12-story landmark luxury residence developed by The Beach Company. Costa* is the second of Easton Porter Group’s concepts to join The Jasper, accompanying Alcove Market, an upscale café, which opened next door earlier this year. Costa* will be open for dinner Tuesday – Saturday, and reservations can be made via Resy.

Charleston has lost an amazing man, but he is with his creator in heaven. Thank you to all of our customers and friends who have asked about him daily and kept him in your prayers. The Seduction of Charleston – Original Poem

In the heart of the South, where the magnolias bloom,
Lies a city of allure, casting a seductive swoon.
Charleston, my love, where history intertwines,
A sultry dance of secrets, beneath the Southern pines.

Beneath the moonlit Spanish moss, draped in desire,
Charleston whispers tales, setting souls on fire.
Cobblestone streets, where echoes of passion linger,
A city that ignites, with each caress of its fingers.

Charmed by the harbor, where the sea breezes play,
Charleston beckons lovers to sway and to stay.
In the warmth of gaslit evenings, love takes flight,
As the stars above Charleston paint the night.

Mansions adorned in finery, whispering tales of old,
Where love stories unfold, passionate and bold.
The Holy City’s embrace, a seductive sweet surrender,
In the arms of Charleston, where passions remember.

Charleston, the enchantress, draped in Southern grace,
A sultry symphony, a passionate embrace.
Where the Lowcountry winds weave tales of romance,
In the dance of the palmettos, find your heart’s chance.

So come, let’s stroll through Rainbow Row’s vibrant hues,
Where love is the melody, and the soul never loses.
In the heart of the South, where magnolias entwine,
Charleston awaits, a seductive valentine.

A recent report revealed that 37 percent of Black small business owners had difficulty accessing new capital and financing – 14 percentage points higher than their non-Black peers.1 The Black Kitchen Initiative and its hallmark grant program strive to provide financial support and drive visibility for these Black food entrepreneurs, with an overarching mission to promote long-term business health and success and preserve the legacy of Black-owned food businesses nationwide.

“We’re so grateful to continue our partnership with HEINZ and SRRJ for the third consecutive year, which enables us to promote diversity in the culinary industry and usher in a more equitable landscape for chefs and food business owners,” says Lindsey Ofcacek, Co-Founder and Executive Director of The LEE Initiative. “These chefs, entrepreneurs, and restaurants play an integral role in our communities, and we recognize the importance of continuing to preserve and uplift their legacies in the future.”

In addition to providing financial assistance, HEINZ will also highlight this year’s grantees on the Black Kitchen Initiative microsite and on both the HEINZ and Black Kitchen Initiative social media channels. Tapping into HEINZ’s national following and the irrational love fans have for the brand and shining a light on the individual recipients, the program continues to celebrate the voices and innovators that make up the Black culinary landscape, with an emphasis on brand awareness that will foster long-term business success.

“As a brand that’s sat proudly on Americans’ tables for over 150 years, we recognize the critical role Black food entrepreneurs and businesses play in shaping and diversifying the American culinary pantheon,” says Lizzy Goodman, Brand Communications Manager, HEINZ. “After hearing directly from past grant recipients how impactful the Black Kitchen Initiative grants have been in helping their businesses prosper, we’re excited to provide 62 new Black food entrepreneurs with up to $25,000 in grants, each.”

The 2023 Black Kitchen Initiative grant recipients are: Hoover’s Cooking, Florida Avenue Grill, Historic Magnolia House, Destiny African Market, A Taste of Heaven, Halleluiah BBQ, Auntie Kim’s Pound Cakes, Jumbo Jive Turkey Legs, Lot-A-Burger, Detroit Soul, Elderflour Baking Company, Rich Taste, Leah & Louise, Jonathan’s Fish & Chips, Jimmy Pearls, JADE Jamaican Grill, Flatrock Smokehouse BBQ, Tre’s Street Kitchen, Eastside Eatery, Gabby Bakes, Maraq Gourmet Soup Shop, Buna Kurs Ethiopian Cafe, Ebony Eyes Soul Food, Tell Me Something Sweet Bakery, Can’t Believe It’s Vegan, Goat & Bean Coffee, Charlotte’s Southern Deli, Queen Mother’s Kitchen, Cleo’s Southern Cuisine, Little Food Studio, Elegant Cuizines, Miss Priss – The Sugar Shop, Dozzy’s Grill, Val’s Cheesecakes, The Sweetest Thing, FoodChasers’ Kitchen, Ruby Scoops Ice Cream & Sweets, Ruki’s Ethiopian Kitchen, Surefire Neighborhood Market, DDs Chick and Cat Shack, Strugglebeard Bakery, Jolo’s Kitchen, Saltbox Seafood Joint, Bobby’s BBQ, Grassrootz Books and Juice Bar, Taste and Toast, Wild Rise Bakery, Radical Rabbit, RND Coffee, Dakar NOLA, Swank Desserts, Got Da Juice, Peculiar Pig Farm, Good Hot Fish, The District Pit, Louisiana Creole Gumbo Restaurant, Caribbean Soul Kitchen LA, Sages Kitchen, Bird Pizzeria, Buttermilk Boutique, Chicago’s Jerk Tacos, and Eastside Pizza House.

About The LEE Initiative

Lindsey Ofcacek and Edward Lee founded The LEE Initiative in 2017 in response to the #MeToo movement. The LEE Initiative creates and implements programs to address issues of diversity and equality in the restaurant industry, always with a focus on increasing opportunities for employment and helping to make the restaurant industry more sustainable. During the COVID-19 outbreak, The LEE Initiative launched The Restaurant Workers Relief Program. This program started in March 2020 out of the catering kitchen of Edward Lee’s restaurant, 610 Magnolia, and expanded to include services offered out of 19 kitchens nationwide. About Southern Restaurants for Racial Justice

Southern Restaurants for Racial Justice began in 2020 as a coalition of bakers, chefs, makers and restaurant owners with a shared goal of raising funds for Black communities in the South–specifically Black-owned restaurants–during Covid-19. In 2021, the founders began a successful collaboration with The LEE Initiative to reimagine their fundraising strategy and goals for the future of the organization. Under The LEE Initiative umbrella, SRRJ has raised over $3 million through corporate partnership funding support and created an annual grant for Black-owned restaurants and food businesses that includes start-up costs, improvement and sustainability funding, and grants specifically built to protect legacy restaurants across the United States. SRRJ now also maintains an emergency relief fund to quickly support Black-owned restaurants during unforeseeable disasters. While they have expanded beyond the South and small locally-driven bake sales, their mission has remained and strengthened: to raise and provide financial resources to protect Black businesses in our industry while also amplifying Black leadership, messaging, and progress.
