About the Book

From the influence of 1920s fashion on asparagus growers to an heirloom watermelon lost and found, Taste the State abounds with surprising stories from South Carolina’s singularly rich food tradition. Here, Kevin Mitchell and David S. Shields present engaging profiles of eighty-two of the state’s most distinctive ingredients, such as Carolina Gold rice, Sea Island White Flint corn, and the cone-shaped Charleston Wakefield cabbage, and signature dishes, such as shrimp and grits, chicken bog, okra soup, Frogmore stew, and crab rice. These portraits, illustrated with original photographs and historical drawings, provide origin stories and tales of kitchen creativity and agricultural innovation. Historical “receipts” and modern recipes, including Chef Mitchell’s distillation of traditions in Hoppin’ John fritters, okra and crab stew, are also provided.

Because Carolina cookery combines ingredients and cooking techniques of three greatly divergent cultural traditions, there is more than a little novelty and variety in the food. In Taste the State Mitchell and Shields celebrate the contributions of Native Americans (hominy grits, squashes, beans), the Gullah Geechee (field peas, okra, guinea squash, rice, sorghum), and European settlers (garden vegetables, grains, pigs, cattle) in the mixture of ingredients and techniques that would become Carolina cooking. They also explore the specialties of every region—the famous rice and seafood dishes of the Lowcountry; the Pee Dee’s catfish and pinebark stews; the smothered cabbage, pumpkin chips, and mustard-based barbecue of the Dutch Fork and Orangeburg; the red chicken stew of the midlands; and the chestnuts, chinquapins, and corn bread recipes of the mountainous Upstate.

Taste the State presents the cultural histories of native ingredients and showcases the evolution of the dishes and the variety of preparations that have emerged. This is true Carolina cooking in all of its cultural depth, historical vividness, and sumptuous splendor—from the simple home cooking of sweet potato pone to Lady Baltimore cake worthy of a Charleston society banquet.

Her countless years working in the food and beverage industry paired with slow strolls through the market, conversations with award winning chefs, inside tips from valets, and historical tours both by bike taxi as well as horse drawn carriage, helped bring the idea of opening her own late night dessert spot to life. “We hope locals and visitors alike make The Honey Hive their home for celebrations of any size with their favorite people.”

Marino’s longtime friend, Shawna Allen, also comes from a food and beverage background in Key West, and spearheads day-to-day operations.

Introducing ‘Females on Fire’: A Charleston Culinary Group – A community of female business owners in Charleston collaborating in a shared experience

Owner Courtney Buckley of Your Mom’s Donuts was interested in starting a women’s group for members of Charleston’s culinary community, including restaurant owners, chefs, bakers, brewers, distillers, farmers, vendors, cookbook authors, and more, so the team at CharlotteBergerPR helped make her dream a reality.

Females on Fire was born in October of 2021, showcasing the best of the best when it comes to female culinary talent in Charleston. The group meets once a month at member’s restaurants and bars to discuss everything from the staffing crisis to where to buy the best local chicken for an upcoming event.

“Females on Fire has a three-prong purpose of unifying women in the industry, creating a path for young women wanting to enter the industry, and bringing resources like funding, business opportunities, and educational experiences to others,” shares Buckley. “We had a great turnout of around a dozen female powerhouses show up to our first event, and we are beyond excited to see what we can accomplish together.”

Karalee Fallert, the owner of All Good Industries, (which encompasses Taco Boy, Wiki Wiki Sandbar, Park & Grove, and The Royal American), was one of the first women restaurant owners to become established in Charleston and is thrilled to finally see a group like this being formed. “It’s tough to get to know other women in the local F+B industry, as many of us are business owners and moms with little free time on our ends. I’m really looking forward to having a new network through Females on Fire to bounce ideas off of, ask questions and collaborate with!”

How do I join?

If interested in being a member of Females on Fire, please email Charlotte Berger of CharlotteBergerPR at Charlottepberger@gmail.com and she can send you an invite to their next event on Nov. 17.

Charleston’s newest spot Oddfellows Ice Cream introduces new eccentric ice cream flavors

Brooklyn-based ice cream brand, OddFellows Ice Cream Co., best known for its out-of-the-box and eccentric ice cream flavors and creative capsule collections, is launching its newest Holiday Capsule on November 12. This five-flavor capsule collection is inspired by the holiday traditions of members of the OddFellows team. Details on these tasty flavors are below:

Buckeye – Inspired by co-owner, Mohan Kumar

  • Flavor: A peanut butter-based ice cream with swirls of chocolate and mini buckeyes mixed throughout
  • Inspiration: Buckeyes were a staple growing up in Ohio (the “Buckeye State”). They were my absolute favorite holiday treat. It’s like the best version of a peanut butter cup.”

Italian Cookie Crumble – Inspired by Marketing Manager Chris Divito

  • Flavor: Almond paste base with chunks of rainbow cake, apricot jam swirls, and soft dark chocolate chunks.
  • Inspiration: ”I’ve been wanting to do this flavor for years. It’s my favorite cookie. I’M ITALIAN.”

Olive Oil Jelly Donut – Inspired by Head of Retail and Operations, Andy Mullins

  • Flavor: An olive oil ice cream with chunks of donuts and swirls of raspberry jam
  • Inspiration: “Raspberry jelly donuts fried in oil are my favorite way to celebrate the oily miracle of Hanukkah. Putting them in a classic OddFellows flavor like Olive Oil is a nod to both my Jewish traditions and my ice cream family. Make a latke ice cream sandwich with a scoop of this: a delicious double mitzvah.”

Poppycock – Inspired by Head of Planning and Production, Abby Lavin

  • Flavor: A popcorn based ice cream with swirls of caramel and cashew pieces
  • Inspiration: “Poppycock is my mom’s favorite. The candy shop close to our house growing up would only stock tins of it during the holidays. Poppycock is one of my favorite treats now because it has become nostalgic.”

Coquito – Inspired by Graphic Designer, Phil Negron

  • Flavor: A coconut ice cream with rum, cinnamon, and secret spices
  • Inspiration: “As a New York-born Puerto Rican, I hold a lot of pride for who I am and where I come from. I have a mom who makes Coquito every Christmas. No matter how long we spend apart, diving into a punch bowl full of cinnamon, coconut, and rum is our favorite way to celebrate our annual reunion.”

The book is called ‘Turtle’ and is the first in a series called Run Like A Girl. A fictional middle grade book about living and running in the Lowcountry, it is truely a testament to Coach Tami Dennis and the amazing running program she has created with the Mount Pleasant Track Club.

It also references the OV frequently as the main character lives in a fictional version of it called North Point.

There is a chapter in it called ‘Turtle ‘where the main character goes on Turtle Patrol on S.I. My daughter Julia is a seventh grader at Laing and she runs for MPTC and is a varsity XC runner for Lucy Beckham HS as well.

This book is all about inspiring girls to take up a sport and stay in it. Profits will be used to set up scholarships for girls in need of booster fees, etc.

We are selling books at the OV 5K next weekend and at Brown Fox on Thursday morning, November 18, 2021.

Mount Pleasant, SC Named the 7th Best Destination in the US for Snowbirds

We are please to announce that StorageCafe has named Mount Pleasant the 7th best destination for snowbirds. How is how the results were measured and what put our Mount Pleasant in the top 10.

  • Mount Pleasant has access to about 8 miles of beaches plus plenty of park space. Typically for the area, the average October-March temperature here is a very acceptable 58 °F.
  • There are five golf courses, and a high number of health centers per 1,000 of the population, no less than 4.7. The town also ranks high for safety.
  • The median rent and house price figures are currently $1,827 and $591,168, and the internet speed is a zoombird-friendly 481 MBps.
  • South Carolina has three top-100 snowbird destinations.

Criteria

To find the best cold-season hideaways, we looked at almost 1,000 places around the US and evaluated eleven factors, including:

  • Temperatures from October to March (obtained from Weather Source)
  • Housing for snowbirds: Availability for seasonal use, and median cost to rent and to purchase as a second home
  • The incidence of crime per capita in each destination
  • The length of beach found beginning no more than 10 miles from a destination
  • The amount of park space per capita and the number of golf courses nearby
  • Local internet speeds, as many snowbirds will be zoombirds or may simply want to blog a lot — the average over all the places we considered is 336 MBps
  • The number of health care and social assistance establishments per 1,000 of the local population — the average over all the places we considered is 3.2
  • The cost of renting a self storage unit — snowbirds visiting the same destination every year, and even second-home owners, can ease their luggage burden by keeping golf clubs, surfboards or seasonal clothes in a unit
