Capping a week of Juneteenth celebrations across the United States, the College of Charleston’s Avery Research Center for African American History and Culture is pleased to announce receipt of materials that will offer new insights into pivotal moments in the fight for civil rights in the South Carolina Lowcountry, including a rare recording of a speech made by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. during a visit to Charleston less than a year before his death.
The Eugene B. Sloan Civil Rights Collection constitutes an extraordinary archive of audiotapes, photographs, correspondence, ephemera and objects from award-winning South Carolina journalist and editor Eugene B. Sloan. Preserved by Sloan’s immediate family over more than five decades, highlights of the collection include three exceedingly rare and historically significant audio recordings:
Generously donated by Lisa Berman, review of the interviews and transcripts is currently underway. They will be accessible in the spring of 2023 to the CofC community and the public on Aviary, the audiovisual repository and platform for the Lowcountry Oral History Initiative. The collection also features artifacts and personal papers connected to Eugene Sloan and his family, including the Hasselblad camera he used to photograph King and other notable civil rights figures, as well as a personal recording Sloan made in the early morning hours after King’s death in 1968.
“The gift from Lisa Berman of the Eugene B. Sloan Civil Rights Collection is a perfect match to the mission and focus of the Avery Research Center,” says CofC President Andrew T. Hsu. “The Avery Research Center is a premierrepository for Black history in the Lowcountryand having the 1967 recording of Martin Luther King Jr. in Charleston is an incredible addition to our world-class collections at the AveryResearch Center.”
The Eugene B. Sloan Civil Rights Collection will also serve as a complementary element of Documenting the Arc, the Avery Research Center’s oral history project documenting the ongoing fight for equality in the Lowcountry. Supported by the Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation, Documenting the Arc collects interviews focusing on the grassroots demonstrations and organizing efforts in late 2014 through the local George Floyd protests and civil unrest that marked the summer of 2020, emphasizing the period between the killing of Walter Scott and the massacre at Mother Emanuel AME Church.
“The artifacts from the Sloan collection also demonstrate how intricately connected the Charleston peninsula and the Sea Island communities (especially Johns and Wadmalaw islands) were to one another and to the ongoing work toward justice,” says Tamara T. Butler, executive director of the Avery Research Center and associate dean of strategic planning and community engagement. “We are honored to be the stewards of this collection as it is an important thread of the civil rights tapestry that we weave together at the Avery Research Center.”
The Avery Research Center publicly announced the donation on Saturday, June 25, 2022, during the annual meeting of the Avery Institute of Afro-American History and Culture, a separate nonprofit organization providing support to the Avery Research Center’s programs, operations and efforts to acquire archival collections. The meeting also inaugurated the Avery Institute’s Curatorial Committee, which will collaborate with Avery Research Center faculty and staff to design upcoming exhibits for the center’s historic building at 125 Bull St. in downtown Charleston.
“The Sloan collection would be a treasured and powerful addition to the holdings of even the largest academic library,” says John W. White, dean of libraries. “The conviction shared by Lisa Berman and the Sloan family that the Avery Research Center is the best steward for these materials is a testament to the institution’s ability to connect meaningfully with communities in the Lowcountry and around the world. We could not be happier to have the Sloan collection forever preserved and made available right here at the Avery Research Center.”
SC Automobile Dealers Induct John Isgett of Darlington to Lead 2022-2023 Year.
COLUMBIA, SC –June 24, 2022– John Isgett of Raceway Ford and Chevrolet, located in Darlington, SC, has been elected President of the South Carolina Automobile Dealers Association (SCADA) for the 2022-2023 term. He was inducted on June 13, 2022, with the unanimous support of the SCADA franchised Dealer body. Isgett has served on the SCADA Board of Directors since 2009 when he was first elected as Director of the Pee Dee District. In 2017, he was elected as a Regional Vice President and became Treasurer in 2020, rising to 1st Vice President in 2021.
Born and raised in Charleston, Mr. Isgett resided there until 1996, moving to Darlington with his family to assist in the management of a Chevrolet Dealership that family friends had acquired. John continued working at the Dealership until the Spring of 2000 when he and a local businessman acquired the Ford Dealership, changing its name to Raceway Ford.
Since the acquisition of the Ford Dealership in 2000, Isgett has been involved in multiple Dealerships acquisitions, as well as closures by GM and Chrysler. This experience led to Isgett becoming a guest columnist for Automotive News, journaling about his experience from a Dealer’s perspective. Today, and since 2010, Isgett leads Raceway Ford of Darlington, Raceway Ford of Hartsville, and Raceway Chevrolet, in Hartsville.
John has two children, Sarah Isgett Miles (Will) and John “JT” Isgett, III. John is a member of the First Baptist Church in Darlington. He has served, chaired, and continues to serve on many community boards, including the Darlington Chamber of Commerce, Hartsville Chamber of Commerce, Pee Dee Regional EMS Council, Florence Darlington Technical College Foundation, Darlington County Water and Sewer Authority, Darlington County Jetport Commission, Darlington County Economic Development Board, Trinity Byrnes Collegiate School, and the Billie Hardee Home for Boys. Additionally, he is a 2014 Liberty Fellowship graduate, a part of the Aspen Institute.
Other Officers elected to the SCADA Board of Directors for the new term are 1st Vice President Scott Rizer of Rizer Chevrolet in Walterboro, and Treasurer Richard Pendarvis of Pendarvis Chevrolet in Edgefield.

The South Carolina Automobile Dealers Association (SCADA), founded in 1937, is the only statewide lobbying force in South Carolina dedicated to the economic and political interests of the owners of automobiles and the Dealers of new cars and trucks. The study carried out by finance experts Wealthtender examined the 50 states and the District of Columbia based on a review of online search terms frequently used by people seeking to leave their current job for greener pastures, to establish which states have the most people looking for a new job in 2022.
The research revealed that Mississippi ranks highest with the greatest percentage of its population interested in leaving their current employer to start a new job. With a Job Search Score of 88.80, Mississippi topped the list for its population having the highest search levels for the term “resume templates” and the third-highest search levels for the job listing website “indeed”.
Georgia ranked as the second-highest state unhappy in their current employment, with a total Job Search Score of 79.95. Georgia has the third-highest proportion of its population searching for “remote jobs” and the sixth-highest number of searches for the term “resume templates”, putting it second in the job dissatisfaction rankings.
Montana places as the third highest state searching for a new job in 2022. The western state has the second-highest level of searches for the term “quit job”, in addition to being the seventh-highest state searching for “remote jobs”, giving Montana a combined Job Search Score of 77.
In contrast, Washington, D.C. ranks as the district with the fewest people looking for a new job, with the lowest Job Search Score of 47.45. The U.S. capital has the lowest search levels for the term “resume templates” and the second-lowest level of searches for “indeed”, making the population of Washington, D.C. the happiest with their current employment.
Hawaii features as the second state with the least people looking for a new job in 2022. The study revealed that the population of Hawaii have searched for the term “indeed” the least of all states, giving it a total Job Search Score of 48.55.
The study found that Alaska ranks as the third state with the least people searching for a new job. With a total Job Search Score of 49, Alaska’s residents search for the term “resume templates” and “indeed”, both the third least in the country, making the population of Alaska the third happiest with their current jobs.
Commenting on the study, a spokesperson for Wealthtender said, “With a record number of job openings in recent months, employers facing increased competition for top talent have begun to offer higher pay, increased benefits, and greater flexibility to attract qualified applicants.
These incentives have resulted in millions of people thinking about quitting their current job for better pay, a new career, or the ability to work from home. This study provides an interesting insight into which states are considering changing jobs the most, with the population of Mississippi clearly the most dissatisfied with their current employment.”

Chad grew up in Oklahoma before moving to Charleston a little over ten years ago to help launch a new insurance company on Johns Island. After five years, he made a career change and met his beautiful future wife Katie in a small Seacoast coed group. .
Less than two years later, the two wed and and just over 9 months ago, they welcomed their first child into the world, Grant.
