Along the way, she developed an appreciation for the nuance of flavor and by using her design background, she has been able to provide oversight for crafting a choreographed experience that makes a space feel comfortable and the experience unforgettable.

With Makeready’s commitment to offering unique experiences that are locally curated with the city in mind, Kara has spent the past year on Makeready’s restaurant and bar operations task force familiarizing herself with each properties’ food and beverage programming. Now as she steps into the role of General Manager of Restaurant and Bar Operations at Emeline, she will focus on introducing Frannie & The Fox and Clerks Coffee Company. She brings with her a team-oriented approach centered around mutual respect for diners and staff alike and looks forward to assembling a team as welcoming as the Charleston community.

Kara received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Kent State and will be based in Charleston.

Tim Morton, Executive Chef at Emeline

Tim fell in love with working behind a busy kitchen at the age of 16. As a native Minnesotan who has called Charleston his home for the past five years, he has developed an appreciation for hospitality, creating special moments for guests in an atmosphere that will make you feel at home.

Tim earned his 20-year skillset by working with Forbes Five Star rated hotels and restaurants. Most recently, he led the opening of Mercantile and Mash in Charleston as executive chef. His dynamic background being mentored by some of the most notable chefs has shaped his vision as he steps into his role with Emeline.

As the Executive Chef at Emeline, Tim will demonstrate his belief in the art of seasonal cooking, highlighting regional Charleston ingredients into Emeline’s restaurant and bar program.

3 Utilization Taxes that could increase funding for education and infrastructure improvements in Charleston County

By Mark A. Leon

Two major areas of concern in Charleston County spurred by the rapid residency growth and tourism spike are academic quality (teacher to student ratio, quality of the curriculum, teacher salaries and commercial space) and the infrastructure of our residential and city streets and sidewalks.

We propose 3 utilization taxes that we feel will drive toward an eco-friendly behavioral change and raise funding for academics and infrastructure improvements.  All three put the weigh on the user, not the mass population.

  1.  Grocery store bag fee of $.25 per bag (plastic or paper).  Many areas have banned the use of plastic bags and urged consumers to bring their own reusable bags, but paper bags remain and in some regions plastic as well.  A sign alone reminding shoppers to use their own bags will not alone change behavior, but a fee of $.25 per bag will shift thinking and ultimately lead us to a paper and plastic-free community.  This tax over time will diminish as change management begins to shift behavior and fewer people are relying on paper or plastic bags.
  • Between Memorial Day and Labor Day between 9:00 AM and 6:00 PM, a $2.00 per car fee will be charged for any car entering Folly Beach, Isle of Palms or Sullivan’s Island or a $50.00 seasonal pass.  For sunrise and sunset chasers, dinner time foodies or evening beach events, these hours will not affect you.  These are prime hours for local and out of town beachgoers.  This is a small fee to pay considering parking will run between $10.00 and $20.00 per car.
  • South Carolina is ranked #42 in the nation in gas taxes.  Translated, we have the 8th cheapest gas in the country.  Across Charleston County, if we increase the gas tax by 5 cents per gallon, we can raise millions of dollars to support infrastructure and academics.  This is a small price to pay when you consider the cost of fixing your alignment after you hit a massive pothole.

If we implement these three utilization tax solutions, we can begin to move in the right direction to ensure we are giving our children the proper education and our local and tourist travelers have streets and roadways that are safe and well maintained.

The Lettuce LocalMotive, an upfitted scaled version of a container farm coming to Mount Pleasant this weekend

Did you know modern farmers can grow lettuce without using dirt? Or land, for that matter? Did you know they can harvest crops 365 days a year, regardless of hurricanes or draughts? They can if they’re growing lettuce hydroponically in a container farm. Hydroponic farming is a method of growing produce that uses water and nutrients, instead of soil.

As part of a year-long program to educate Publix customers about the benefits of hydroponic farming, and truly hyperlocal produce, The Lettuce LocalMotive, an upfitted scaled version of a container farm, will be on-site at Publix in Mt. Pleasant at 162 1125 Park W Blvd, Mt Pleasant, SC 29466  from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm on Saturday, February 29, 2020.

Customers are invited to step inside the interactive mobile farm to experience an actual hydroponic farming environment. Guided by Charleston, SC-based Vertical Roots farmers, the family-friendly event will showcase “a day in the life” of a hydroponic farmer, feature hands-on activities, and include salad bar samplings and giveaways. From hearing about how the shipping containers are converted into farms, to diving into the cloud-based technology behind the soil-less farming method, guests will learn all aspects of the sustainable benefits of hydro-farming.

If you’re in the area, we’d love for you to stop by. I’ve included some images from the Lettuce LocalMotive’s last stop as well as tour date infographics here, and am happy to answer any questions. Curious about more hydroponic farming facts? Read on below the sig line and check out this blog post over at Publix’s Checkout!

Best,

Amanda

More Fun Facts About Hydroponic Farming

  • Hydroponic farms do not use soil, and instead utilize water and nutrients to grow produce. Vertical Roots lettuce is grown in a blend of all-natural coconut fiber, which is chemical- and pesticide residue- free.
  • Vertical Roots uses a cloud-based technology that monitors and controls the farm pod environment including the temperature, lighting and water dosage.
  • The technology even tracks every single seed to ensure food safety.
  • The technology also manages the water recycling and filtration, which ultimately utilizes 98% less water than traditional farming.
  • Vertical Roots farm pods are made from refurbished shipping containers and can be placed on any surface. This enables produce to be grown in communities that don’t have farm land, and promotes land conservation in communities that do.
  • The lettuce is grown 365 days a year. Each farm pod can produce 3,400 plants per harvest, and are harvested 15-16 times a year. That’s a lot of lettuce.
  • While 95% of lettuce is grown in Arizona and California and can travel up to 2,000 miles before it gets to the plate, hydroponic farms can be placed anywhere to provide fresh local produce to grocery stores within a closer radius.
  • Because of the controlled container environment and technology monitoring, hydroponic grown lettuce often contains more nutrients than traditional grown lettuce.

Steinberg Law Firm Voted the “Best Law Firm in Summerville”

Charleston, SC (Law Firm Newswire) February 25, 2020 – Earlier this month, Summerville Journal Scene reported that its readers voted the Steinberg Law Firm as the best law firm in Summerville. The Summerville Journal Scene is a local publication that dates back to the 1940s. The paper is delivered weekly to over 22,000 homes in the Dorchester County area. Summerville Communications, Inc., the parent company of Summerville Journal Scene, also publishes the Berkeley Independent and The Gazette.

The Steinberg Law Firm is a local Summerville personal injury and workers’ compensation firm that has offices located in Summerville, Goose Creek, and Charlottesville. The dedicated attorneys at the firm handle cases on behalf of those who have been injured as a result of another’s negligence. The firm routinely pursues compensation for injury victims following car accidents, slip-and-falls, and incidents of medical malpractice and nursing home negligence.

Readers of the Summerville Journal Scene considered all area law firms when determining that Steinberg Law Firm was the best law practice in Summerville. The firm is known for its deep community roots, which go back over 90 years, when the firm’s founder, Irving Steinberg created a firm to represent the interests of those who needed a voice. Since then, Steinberg Law Firm has grown significantly, opening two additional regional offices and expanding its practice areas significantly.

According to readers, one of the most appreciated aspects of Steinberg Law Firm is that the firm measures its success by getting clients’ lives back on track. Unlike other law firms that focus their representation only on the most serious cases, Steinberg Law Firm represents clients in all types of claims and works quickly and efficiently to work towards the client’s stated goals. A major part of representing an injury victim, according to the partners at the firm, is listening to what is important to that individual client.

The skilled attorneys at Steinberg Law have over 170 years of combined legal experience handling South Carolina workers’ compensation and personal injury claims. Since the firm’s creation over 90 years ago, Steinberg Law attorneys have provided exceptional representation to clients dealing with personal injury and workers’ compensation claims in and around the Charleston, South Carolina area. Eighth annual Charitable Giving Report reveals continued growth of online and mobile donations

Charleston, S.C. (February 18, 2020) — The Blackbaud Institute, a research division of Blackbaud (NASDAQ: BLKB), the world’s leading cloud software company powering social good, today releases its eighth annual Charitable Giving Report, offering benchmarking data based on the largest analysis of overall and online giving statistics for social good organizations. Through the Charitable Giving Report, the Blackbaud Institute is equipping organizations with resources to inform their strategies by enabling them to compare their organization to peers – across size and subsector – and identify areas of strength and opportunity heading into the new year. While this year’s report offers year-over-year statistics on giving consistent with past reports, it also includes deeper analysis of the largest data set of donations and more context around the numbers than ever before to help social good organizations navigate and thrive in the ever-changing charitable giving landscape.

Additional new features to the Charitable Giving Report, include:

  • Insight into how to use trend data to benchmark.
  • Highlights of the practices organizations should be using to ensure they can continue to attract, engage and retain donors to achieve greater success in 2020 and beyond.
  • More data by subsector to provide organizations with a clearer picture of how they’re benchmarking against similar organizations, such as the average gift size and the average online gift size by subsector.
  • A view of the three-year trends in overall and online giving by organization size and subsector to uncover long-term trends.

“We created the Blackbaud Institute to lead groundbreaking research and insights to equip a thriving social good sector for impact. The Charitable Giving Report isn’t just a compilation of interesting statistics, tables and charts—it provides an opportunity to see where giving is—and more importantly where it can go if leaders use this data to inform their decisions,” said Steve MacLaughlin, Blackbaud’s vice president of product management and senior advisor to the Blackbaud Institute. “This year, we’ve taken a broader view of giving trends to provide a more representative perspective of what is happening with charitable giving, and it reveals charitable giving is continuing to evolve with our changing world. In the last year alone, online donations have increased nearly 7% and more than a quarter of those online donations come from a mobile device.”

The 2019 Charitable Giving Report includes giving data from 8,210 nonprofit organizations representing $36.3 billion in fundraising revenue as well as online giving data from 5,204 nonprofit organizations representing $2.7 billion in online fundraising revenue.

Key Giving Trends from the Charitable Giving Report:

  • A 3-year view of fundraising from the same organizations reveals a 5.1% growth in overall giving and an increase of nearly 10% for online donations.
  • Online giving in 2019 grew 6.8% year-over-year for the 5,204 nonprofit organizations in the analysis, while overall giving in 2019 grew 1.0% for the 8,210 nonprofit organizations included in the report.
  • The percentage of fundraising from online giving continues to grow with 8.7% of total fundraising stemming from online giving in 2019. Additionally, small nonprofits continued to show the largest year-over-year growth in percentage of total fundraising stemming from online giving.
  • In 2019, an estimated 26% of online donations were made using mobile devices. This has grown steadily since 2014 when it was just 9% of online donations.
  • While the median donation amount for gifts below $1,000 in the U.S. has remained steady at $20 for years, the median donation amount for gifts above $1,000 in the U.S. has more than doubled since 2016, now clocking in at $2,500.
  • The average donor age in the U.S. remains largely unchanged at 63, which has been consistent since 2016.
