Petco Love Pick Me! SC Reaches 15,000 Adoption Milestone in South Carolina

More than 90 organizations and Petco locations participated in the 8th annual statewide adoption event!

SOUTH CAROLINA – Over the course of just 10 days, an incredible 2,416 dogs and cats found loving homes during this year’s Petco Love Pick Me! SC statewide adoption event — bringing the total number of lives saved through the initiative and adoptions to more than 15,000 over the past eight years.

“This event continues to be a statewide movement,” said Abigail Appleton, PMP, CAWA, No Kill South Carolina Project Officer with Charleston Animal Society. “To know that 15,452 pets are now in loving homes thanks to this project is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when we work together.”

From June 20–29, every region of South Carolina took part in the lifesaving event, with 91 animal shelters, rescue groups, and Petco locations coming together to create thousands of pet adoption success stories. Families from the Lowcountry to the Upstate opened their hearts and homes, taking advantage of free and low-fee adoptions offered statewide.

“We went into the event with dogs in crates lining our back hallway and so many kittens. We are coming out of it slightly exhausted but with a new sense of hope,” said Allison LaBorde of the SPCA Albrecht Center,

Charleston Animal Society’s No Kill South Carolina initiative, in partnership with Petco Love, powers this annual event to help reduce overcrowding in shelters and shine a spotlight on the thousands of amazing pets waiting to be adopted.

SHELTER SUCCESS STORIES

  • Darlington Humane Society saw American Idol Contestant Preston Duffee come in to visit and he left with a new best friend named Ranger.
  • Barnwell County Animal Shelter exceeded their own expectations with 13 cat and 5 dog adoptions. They also microchipped 8 dogs.
  • Charleston Animal Society showed a 29% increase in adoptions over the same period last year.
  • At the SPCA Albrecht Center, 3 formerly-malnourished cats rescued from neglect cases, a blind and diabetic cat, and the shelter’s most senior dogs all found homes.
  • When Columbia Animal Services received an unexpectedly high number of intakes and several shelter areas closed due to roof repairs, shelter staff feared they would be forced to euthanize pets to make space. But so many adopters stepped up that every pet life was saved.

“This is the kind of impact we strive for – finding loving homes for thousands of adoptable pets,” said Petco Love President, Susanne Kogut. “Every pet adopted is a life saved, and Petco Love Pick Me! SC proves what’s possible when we come together with communities and shelters with one mission: love and lifesaving.”

SPAY NEUTER WEEK RECORD

In addition to adoption specials, the Simon Greer Mobile Spay-Neuter Clinic from Charleston Animal Society traveled the state during the event, providing hundreds of pets with spay/neuter surgeries, microchips, and vaccinations to ensure they were adoption-ready. “This year our team accomplished a record 334 spay-neuter surgeries from shelters in seven different counties,” Appleton said.

Petco locations across South Carolina played a vital role by hosting adoption events and providing new pet families with everything they need—from food and leashes to beds and toys—to get off to a great start.

While the event may be over for this year, the challenge of finding homes for pets this summer continues. “Every shelter in the state continues to operate over-capacity. Summer is always the most challenging time of year, but it truly is the best time of year to adopt, because you and your family will have more time to bond with your new pet,” said Appleton.

About Charleston Animal Society
Since 1874, the mission of Charleston Animal Society has always been the prevention of cruelty to animals.  Recognized as an international model of lifesaving success, the Animal Society focuses on three impacts: ending the unnecessary euthanasia, overpopulation, and cruelty of animals.  Last year, the Animal Society cared for over 35,000 animals, spayed or neutered over 15,000 animals, adopted over 5,000 animals, and taught compassion to over 11,000 children. As South Carolina’s largest lifesaving organization, animal organizations from across the state and beyond seek guidance and support from the Animal Society, whose guiding principle is that it has a disproportionate responsibility to others; if there is an animal in need anywhere that the Animal Society can impact, it will.  With 13 consecutive years of exemplary independent financial audits, the Animal Society remains the top-rated nonprofit organization in South Carolina. For more information, visit CharlestonAnimalSociety.org.

VA breaks ground on new clinic at Joint Base Charleston

JOINT BASE CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Ralph H. Johnson Veterans Affairs Health Care System hosted a groundbreaking ceremony to begin construction on a new Department of Veterans Affairs specialty care clinic at Joint Base Charleston, South Carolina, July 16, 2025, marking a significant step forward in expanding healthcare access for Lowcountry veterans.

Distinguished guests and base leadership gathered for the ceremony, which highlighted the clinic’s role in bridging the gap between military and civilian care. The facility will offer a wide range of services, including primary care, mental health support and chronic condition management, meeting some of the most pressing needs in the veteran community.

“Having services co-located on Joint Base Charleston provides familiarity, comfort and trust, three critical factors that often determine whether veterans seek care or not,” said Scott Isaacks, Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Ralph H. Johnson VA Health Care System. “This clinic will stand as a lasting testament to our unwavering commitment: that no veteran is left behind.”

Once complete, the new clinic will serve as a hub for timely, compassionate and integrated care. Construction is set to begin immediately, with an expected opening in the near future.

U.S. Air Force Col. Jason H. Parker, 628th Air Base Wing and Joint Base Charleston commander, emphasized the importance of the clinic’s location and significance.

“This clinic will be built adjacent to the base, making it accessible to service members and veterans who call Charleston home,” he said. “It’s taken decades for us to recognize the type and quality of care for the veterans we serve.”

He also acknowledged the many teams that made the project possible.

“We have come a very very long way and stand on the shoulders of those who came before us,” Parker said. “Today is made possible because of the work of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the 628th Civil Engineer Squadron and federal partners who helped turn vision into reality.”

The groundbreaking at Joint Base Charleston underscores the VA’s ongoing mission to deliver high-quality, accessible care to those who served. With continued collaboration between the VA and Department of Defense, the project is poised to transform veteran healthcare in the region for years to come.

“May this clinic serve as a beacon of hope, healing and excellence for generations to come,” Isaacks said.

Charleston’s MRI Wellness: An Evolutionary Journey into the Future of Preventative Healthcare

By Mark A. Leon

When you choose to get a preventative full body MRI, there are mixed emotions that run through your head including anxiety, claustrophobia and fear of the “what if”.  At MRI Wellness, it is a little different, a little more comforting because of Bryan.

Bryan is an 18-year medical professional and your guiding hand as the lead MRI Technologist.  Throughout the process, he guides, comforts and educates with care and just enough humor at the right time.  He makes a profound and positive impact during the entire process.

This is one of many reasons that MRI Wellness stands out as the Lowcountry and Southeast’s leading provider of compassionate preventative healthcare.

Yet Bryan is just one of several specialized and caring professionals you will interact with on this incredible team including Angie, Sydney, Cori, Joanna, Jessica, and Amy.

I was grateful to have this amazing team guide me through the process.  Now I’d like to share some additional insight that may help you decide if a preventative MRI screening is right for you.

Let’s learn more about MRI Wellness and help you begin your journey to peace of mind and a long healthy life

MRI Wellness is redefining healthcare in Charleston by making preventative MRI screenings accessible and convenient. With a focus on early detection and eliminating the need for physician referrals, MRI Wellness empowers individuals to take proactive steps toward their long-term health.

MRI Wellness, conveniently located in North Charleston just off Highway 26 is the only full-service MRI center in South Carolina.

The Importance of Preventative Healthcare

Preventative healthcare is essential for identifying health issues before symptoms arise. MRI scans, which are non-invasive and radiation-free, allow for early detection of tumors, organ abnormalities, and musculoskeletal problems.

This proactive approach helps patients make informed decisions and take timely action, ultimately leading to better health outcomes.

Key benefits of preventative MRI scans:

        •       Early detection of silent or asymptomatic conditions
        •       Comprehensive internal health assessments
        •       Peace of mind and greater control over personal health

No Referral Needed: Breaking Down Barriers

MRI Wellness removes traditional obstacles by offering self-referral MRI full-body screenings. Patients can schedule appointments directly, without waiting for a physician’s order. This approach delivers:

        •       Faster access: No delays for referral appointments
        •       Empowerment: Patients choose when and what to screen
        •       Convenience: Flexible scheduling for busy lifestyles

Edward Tavel, MD: Visionary Leadership and Teaming

At the heart of MRI Wellness is Dr. Edward Tavel, Jr., a Charleston native and board-certified physician with over 30 years of experience in pain management and interventional medicine. Dr. Tavel’s leadership is marked by a commitment to innovation, patient safety, and compassionate care.

Throughout the development and growth of the practice, the emphasis is on the latest advances in non-surgical techniques and evidence-based medicine, ensuring patients benefit from state-of-the-art care with a patient-centered approach prioritizing empathy, clear communication, and individualized care.

Teaming Philosophy

Dr. Tavel encourages multidisciplinary collaboration, open dialogue, and ongoing education among staff.  He invests in professional development, creating a motivated and knowledgeable team dedicated to patient wellness.  His leadership extends beyond clinical care—Dr. Tavel is recognized for his contributions to medical safety standards and his role on the South Carolina Medical Safety Review Board.

“What we are trying to do is identify illness early when there is a chance to make positive change; we want to give peace of mind to many; and we want to advance the boundaries of proactive healthcare” explained Dr. Tavel about the mission and goals.

How the Process Works

        1.      Choose MRI Wellness: Select a center offering direct-access MRI screens.
        2.      Select a scan: Decide on the area or full-body scan based on your health goals.
        3.      Book an appointment: Schedule online or by phone—no referral needed.
        4.      Receive results: Access timely, comprehensive results directly and share with your healthcare provider.

The Future of Wellness

MRI Wellness is more than an imaging center—it’s a movement toward proactive, patient-driven healthcare. By combining advanced AI assisted technology, compassionate care, and barrier-free access, MRI Wellness is making preventative health a reality for the Charleston community and beyond.

What it meant to me

To say there was a sense of comfort and relief is nothing short of an understatement.  With a family history of breast cancer, diabetes and MS, being pre-disposed to a life altering ailment has lingered for many years.  Yet, when my comprehensive report arrived in my portal and my assigned PA said during our post report analysis call “This is a great MRI report”, the sense of joy was overwhelming.  A clean bill of health and a recommended routine of Pilates to help my core.  That felt good!

MRI Wellness is a personal gift of self-awareness wrapped with care by a staff of nurturing medical experts provide unconditional care from appointment to results and follow-up.

I am grateful to Bryan, Angie, Sydney, Cori, Joanna, Jessica, Amy and Dr. Tavel for your care, education and relationship focused attention.
