EnerSys expanding Sumter County operations

$6.7 million investment will create 14 new jobs

COLUMBIA, S.C. – EnerSys, a global leader in energy storage systems and solutions, today announced it is expanding its operations in Sumter County. The company’s $6.7 million investment will create 14 new jobs. 

Headquartered in Pennsylvania, EnerSys is an industrial technology leader providing global customers with energy solutions that meet the growing demand for efficient, reliable and sustainable energy. The company has more than 32 manufacturing facilities worldwide, including its Sumter metal plant established in 1972. In 2024, the company announced plans to establish its second South Carolina operation, a lithium-ion cell manufacturing facility in Greenville County.

For this project, EnerSys will add 34,000 square feet to its facility located at 1990 Corporate Way in Sumter. The expansion will allow EnerSys to meet growing demand for lithium, flooded and Thin Plate Pure Lead (TPPL) battery products.

Blackhorse Steel Works establishing operations in Bamberg County

$5.2 million investment will create 40 new jobs

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Blackhorse Steel Works (Blackhorse), an advanced steel solutions provider, today announced it is establishing operations in Bamberg County. The company’s $5.2 million investment will create 40 new jobs. 

Blackhorse specializes in innovative and dependable steel services tailored for industrial and commercial projects. The company’s capabilities include cutting, welding, bending, forming and precision processing.

Blackhorse’s 107,000-square-foot facility, located at 19110 Heritage Highway in Denmark, will be used for the fabrication of miscellaneous and structural steel components.

Komar Industries relocating and establishing first South Carolina operation in York County

$11.5 million investment will create 160 new jobs

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Komar Industries (Komar), a manufacturer of balers and compactors, today announced it is establishing its first South Carolina operation in York County. The $11.5 million investment will create 160 new jobs. 

Komar specializes in the design and manufacture of balers, stationary compactors and self-contained compactors. The company is also a leading innovator of technology for the recycling and waste management industries.

Relocating its subsidiary, Bace, LLC, from North Carolina, Komar will upfit the existing building located at 200 Ratchford Road in York. The new operation will grow the company’s manufacturing capabilities in waste and recycling compactor technology.

The Coordinating Council for Economic Development approved job development credits related to the project. The council also awarded a $150,000 Set-Aside grant to York County to assist with the costs of building improvements.

Universal Industrial Gases, LLC grows South Carolina footprint with new operation in Darlington County

Company investing nearly $100 million in new facility

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Universal Industrial Gases, LLC (UIG), a wholly owned subsidiary of Nucor Corporation (Nucor), today announced it is growing its South Carolina footprint with a new operation in Darlington County. The company is investing nearly $100 million in the new facility. 

Based in Pennsylvania, UIG specializes in the design, construction, and operation of industrial gas production and supply systems. The company operates production plants across the U.S., including one in Berkeley County, supplying to both Nucor sites and third-party clients.

UIG’s new 200,000-square-foot facility, located at 300 Steel Mill Road in Darlington, will provide on-site industrial gases to Nucor’s Darlington County steel mill.

Operations are expected to be online in December 2025.

Acclaimed Restaurateur Steve Palmer to Open Rooftop Restaurant in the Heart of the District

North Charleston, SC – March 19, 2025 – Navy Yard Charleston is establishing the Charleston Design District, a hub for designers to create and source premium home furnishings, featuring design showrooms for a wide range of product lines. Located along the Cooper River in North Charleston, SC, the Charleston Design District will span areas of the former Charleston Naval Base and surrounding historic campus when it officially launches in the fall. 

Home furnishings companies Kravet, Schumacher, and Textures have signed leases for first-to-market showroom locations in the District. They will join beloved and established Charleston brands, such as The Urban Electric Co., Fritz Porter, and Smithey Ironware Company, bringing together showrooms and innovative maker spaces to create a collective design guild and resource-rich hub for interior design ideation and creation. In total, Navy Yard Charleston plans to include up to 150,000 square feet of design showroom spaces and serve as a regional design hub for the Lowcountry—from the Outer Banks to Savannah.

The Charleston Design District will also feature a wide range of dining experiences, including a new full-service rooftop restaurant from acclaimed Charleston restaurateur Steve Palmer of Indigo Road Hospitality Group. The forthcoming concept will encompass 8,200 square feet atop Navy Yard Charleston’s Storehouse Nine, providing indoor and outdoor seating with views of the Cooper River and historic shipyard.

The Charleston Design District is a central component of Navy Yard Charleston, a multi-phase redevelopment to transform the former Charleston Naval Base into a vibrant, mixed-use neighborhood where history and innovation come together to create a defining destination. The redevelopment is led by Jamestown, which is known for its design-focused approach to real estate, alongside local Charleston real estate developers Weaver Capital Partners and WECCO Development. Jamestown has extensive experience creating and fostering design and maker districts across the country, including at the Boston Design Center, Ponce City Market and Westside Provisions District in Atlanta, and Industry City in Brooklyn.

Textures, a Nashville-based luxury flooring company known for its curated, timeless wood finishes, has leased a 1,620-square-foot showroom in Storehouse Nine.

Sauer Brands, the parent company of Duke’s Mayo, has been acquired by Advent International, a private equity investor, and gained a new chief operating officer, the company announced Feb. 19.

The terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Industry veteran E. Yuri Hermida assumed the role of chief executive officer of Sauer Brands effective March 12. Todd Lachman, a seasoned consumer packaged goods executive, has joined Sauer Brands as Chair of the board of directors.

Advent International is a global equity investor with 16 offices across five continents overseeing more than 420 investments in 43 countries.

Sauer Brands Inc. was founded as The C.F. Sauer Company in 1887, in Richmond, Virginia. It has manufacturing facilities in Richmond, Mauldin, South Carolina; New Century, Kansas, and San Louis Obispo, California.

The company’s brands include Duke’s Mayonnaise, Kernel Season’s, The Spice Hunter, Mateo’s Gourmet Salsa and Sauer’s.

Duke’s mayonnaise was born in Greenville when Eugenia Duke began preparing sandwiches for soldiers training at Camp Sevier during World War I.

The iconic condiment’s popularity grew through the 1920s until demand outpaced Duke’s ability to manage, whereupon she sold the business to C.F. Sauer in 1929.

CHARLESTON, SC: On the evening of February 10, 2025, Congresswoman Nancy Mace, in a speech meant for the entire world to hear, falsely and recklessly accused Brian Musgrave of being a rapist, a sexual predator and a sex trafficker during a speech from the floor of Congress. She has republished the same accusations countless times outside of the floor of Congress, through spoken words, photographs, social media posts, and has done so both directly and through third parties.

Congresswoman Mace was asked to retract her allegations against Brian Musgrave and issue an apology and/or to produce any evidence to support her allegations.  Having done neither, Bland Richter announces the filing of Brian Musgrave’s Complaint against Congresswoman Mace for defamation of character and other claims.  Through the lawsuit, Musgrave seeks to restore his good name and reputation as he enjoyed the same prior to Nancy Mace’s false accusations. As one can imagine, these accusations have not only destroyed Brian Musgrave, but have also inflicted great pain on his wife and children . 

While Congresswoman Mace is afforded certain protections for her activities as a member of Congress, the suit seeks to test the legal limits of that protection, as Musgrave contends the mere fact Ms. Mace was elected to serve as a United States Congresswoman does not grant her the power to destroy a man’s reputation with impunity and use the hallowed floor of the House of Representatives as a sanctuary to destroy him.

It is unfortunate that Ms. Mace has rejected the repeated offers simply to retract her allegations against Brian Musgrave and apologize.  She has elected instead to litigate these matters.  Truth is the defense to defamation.  Brian Musgrave welcomes the truth.

Students Surprised With Fest Tickets, a Performance Opportunity, and a Community-Wide Push for Music Education 

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (MARCH 19, 2025) —In a powerful show of community support, Lovin’ Life Music Fest (LLMF) presented a $10,000 donation to the West Charlotte High School band program yesterday, ensuring students have the resources they need to continue their musical education. The funds will go toward purchasing additional instruments and equipment for the band as well as providing new creative arts supplies. This donation underscores LLMF’s commitment to empowering young artists, supporting the Charlotte community, and fostering the future of music and the arts. 

The event at West Charlotte High School brought together 55 marching band students, staff, alumni, and community supporters. Bojangles, through the Bojangles Foundation, generously provided a warm breakfast for all attendees and made an additional $1,000 donation to help enhance the band’s programs and opportunities. 

“This is more than just a donation—it’s an investment in these students and their future,” said Gregg McConnell, director of Lovin’ Life Music Fest. “Music education is vital, and we want these students to know that their talent, dedication, and passion matter. Today, they’re performing at their high school, but one day, they could be on the main stage at Lovin’ Life Music Fest in front of 28,000 fans.” 

A Future on the Lovin’ Life Stage 

As part of LLMF’s commitment to celebrating young musicians, every student in the band, along with a guest, received tickets to Lovin’ Life Music Fest. Even more exciting, the West Charlotte High School band will have the opportunity to perform at LLMF, giving them a once-in-a-lifetime chance to play in front of thousands of festgoers. 

“This is an incredible opportunity for our students,” said West Charlotte Band Director, Mr. Adam Sobers. “Not only does this donation help us rebuild our program, but it also gives these students a platform to showcase their talent and see where their hard work can take them. The impact of today will be felt for years to come.” 

Empowering Students Through Music & Kindness 

Each student in the band received a custom, one-of-a-kind, handmade Love2BKindbracelet, with an encouraging message to serve as a reminder of the power of kindness and 
perseverance. These bracelets tie into LLMF’s #Love2BKind initiative, a movement dedicated to spreading positivity, resilience, and the importance of supporting one another. 

“We believe in leading with kindness,” said representatives of LLMF. “These students have faced setbacks, but their determination is inspiring. The Love2BKind bracelets symbolize that no matter what challenges they face, kindness and passion will always win.” 

A New Trailer & Ways to Give 

To further support the band’s future, a local non-profit Jane’s Fund has already stepped in to provide a custom-built band trailer, which will be unveiled soon. This trailer will serve as a symbol of resilience and a resource for future generations of West Charlotte HS musicians.
