$10.27 billion in announced capital investment, most in state history

The South Carolina Department of Commerce today released its 2022 industry recruitment results which reflect historic economic activity. From January to December 2022, the state announced total capital investment of $10.27 billion, the single largest year in state history. That investment represents 120 projects and the creation of 14,083 new jobs.

“It’s no accident or surprise that South Carolina is breaking economic development records,” said Gov. Henry McMaster. “We have consistently proven that our people are among the most talented and hard-working in the world, that we’re committed to fostering a competitive business-friendly environment, and that there is no better place to live, work, and raise a family. These historic achievements are a direct result of the South Carolinians who make our state great and understand the value of hard work.”

Industry recruitment soared in multiple categories in 2022. The record-breaking capital investment of $10.27 billion reflects a 118% increase over 2017, and announced investments in rural South Carolina in 2022 increased 30% over 2017. While domestic-based companies represented the majority of announced investments, overall foreign direct investment (FDI) in 2022 increased 371% over 2021.

“South Carolina’s 2022 industry recruitment is not only one for the record books, but it also reinforces that our state is leading this transformational time in business,” said Secretary of Commerce Harry M. Lightsey III. “We are cultivating an increasingly diverse, technologically advanced economy that will continue to create opportunities for our citizens for generations to come.”

South Carolina Supreme Court Strikes Down State Abortion Ban

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — The South Carolina Supreme Court on Thursday struck down a ban on abortion after six weeks, ruling the restriction enacted by the Deep South state violates a state constitutional right to privacy.

The decision marked a significant victory for abortion rights’ advocates suddenly forced to find safeguards at the state level after the U.S. Supreme Court overtured Roe v. Wade in June. 

With federal abortion protections gone, Planned Parenthood South Atlantic sued in July under the South Carolina constitution’s right to privacy. Restrictions in other states are also facing challenges, some as a matter of religious freedom.

But since the high court’s momentous decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, no state court until Thursday in South Carolina had ruled definitively whether a constitutional right to privacy — a right not explicitly enumerated in the U.S. Constitution — extends to abortion. 

“Planned Parenthood will keep working day by day and state by state to safeguard that right for all people,” said Alexis McGill Johnson, president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, in a statement after the ruling.

Charleston based Summit Adventure Park pays $11K penalty after allowing minors to work outside legal hours

CHARLESTON TRAMPOLINE PARK PAYS $11K PENALTY AFTER ALLOWING 14- AND 15-YEAR-OLDS TO WORK OUTSIDE LEGALLY PERMITTED HOURS

Employer:  SC1 Summit LLC – operating as Summit Adventure Park Charleston

Investigation site: 1964 Ashley River Road, Charleston, SC 29407

Investigation findings: U.S. Department of Labor Wage and Hour Division investigators found the employer – a children’s trampoline park – allowed 30 minor-aged employees to work outside of federally permitted work hours. Summit Adventure Park Charleston allowed 14- and 15-year-old workers to work more than 18 hours in a school week and after 7 p.m. while school was in session, both violations of the child labor provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.

Civil Money Penalties Assessed: The agency assessed a $11,010 civil penalty to address the child labor violations.                                                

Quote: “Employers must familiarize themselves with the requirements that come with hiring minor employees. These laws exist to protect young workers and ensure their educational opportunities are not interfered with,” said Wage and Hour Division District Director Jamie Benefiel in Columbia, South Carolina. “We encourage employers to access our Youthrules.gov website or contact the Wage and Hour Division to learn how to navigate working hours for minor-aged employees and uphold their obligations under the law when they choose to hire them.”
