Nature Adventures (Mount Pleasant, SC) Participates in EPA Roundtable on the Importance of Clean Water Protections in the Southeast

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – Matt Gamble, a Nature Adventures manager and guide, participated in a June 7 virtual roundtable hosted jointly by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Cahaba Brewing Co. on the importance of clean water protections in the Southeast.

Gamble joined stakeholders from a broad spectrum of land and water users who live or work across the Southeast. Participants included a director of a water and sewer utility; general contracting and construction management executive; mitigation banker; faith leader; environmental justice advocates; farmers; elected officials; representatives from conservation and environmental organizations; and clean water scientists.

In the Southeast, water is a way of life. Regional streams, rivers, lakes, estuaries, and oceans are central to the area’s history, culture, and economy. Compared to other regions, the Southeast has more miles of streams and more acres of wetlands.

Located on Shem Creek in Mount Pleasant, Nature Adventure offers kayak and paddleboarding tours to locals and visitors.

“Throughout our region, families, businesses, and communities depend on these waters for drinking, fishing, hunting, paddling, as a guard against flooding and pollution, and to sustain a burgeoning tourism industry,” Gamble said. “We depend on consistent minimum federal standards to safeguard clean water and protect our everyday life.”

Gamble discussed the significance of ensuring strong protections for natural habitats. He highlighted the harm upstream activities can have on water quality downstream, especially on a small, family-owned company such as Nature Adventures.

A strong Clean Water Act helps protect the tourism industry and allows the public to experience untouched nature and enjoy outdoor activities, Gamble said.

Nature Adventures co-owner Ben-Jamin Toy pointed to the EPA’s Clean Water Act as a key player in protecting waters used for outdoor recreation in the Lowcountry and across South Carolina.

“Our beautiful Shem Creek is a clear example of why strong protections under the Clean Water Act are key to maintaining access to outdoor tourism on our rivers, streams, and estuaries,” Toy said.

Why You Should Date a Southern Girl

By Mark A. Leon

Once upon a time, there was a soft spoken Southern girl from the cotton fields of Andrews, South Carolina.  This was a town where horses roam free, haystacks reached to the sky, rocking chairs still ache and an old Texaco sign remind you of the way it used to be.  This girl symbolized something special.  With her slow romanticized dialogue and warm inviting eyes, it was hard to not melt in her presence.

As I look back on the time I spent with her, I remember a few special moments:

It was Friday morning and we were just a boy and girl holding hands on swinging bench tied between two trees in the front yard.  As we let the sun set into the sky, coffee in hand, we looked in each others eyes as the world stopped for just one moment in time.

As we continued to smile, erasing the thought of life’s responsibilities, we started pondering how we could bring a sparkle to her kids when they got home from school.  We soon began to gather all the pine cones we could find and spelled their name out under the tree.  When they got home, they were so excited, they wanted to spell our names out next to theirs.  This led to an afternoon of nature’s crafts, trampoline and family fun.

That day has never left my memory.

I now recall a cool November night at Morgan Creek when we engulfed ourselves with oysters and chili as local tunes played in the distance.  The night would not have been complete without s’mores by the fire overlooking the creek.  That girl knew her way around a fire and never looked more beautiful.  Though hundreds, surrounded us, the night was about her and I.

The moment that I knew.  The moment when I realized that dating a Southern girl is much bigger than yourself was at a 12-person outdoor brunch at Boone’s on King Street.  She was the only Southern girl and we she spoke, the table erupted in admiration.  She was like a novelty that you wanted to hug and never let go.  All I could do was smile.

I never forget this love.  With her fiery independence, sensual passion and innocent charm, she was an angel who released so much love.  That is the feeling you get when you fall for a Southern girl.

To some, Southern girls have a stigma that they want to be showered with gifts and luxuries; that they need a big home and expensive jewelry; that they need constant attention.  That is so far from the truth.  A true Southern girl is generous, caring, warm and believes that simple living with someone that gives completely of themselves is all the happiness you need in life.

My Southern girl was named Priscilla.  She may not have dressed the part of a Southern Belle, wore a bonnet and carried a baby blue umbrella.  She may not have waited for me to lay a blanket over a puddle, but there was never a day that went by that I didn’t feel like the luckiest man on Earth.

Take the grit and beauty of Daisy Duke, the maternal instincts of Lorelai Gilmore and the romantic edge of Anastasia Steele and you come close to a Southern girl.  A little rock, a lot of country and a complete woman.

That is the way a Southern girl makes you feel.  She makes the breeze a little cooler, the simple things feel more important and the value of love felt a little deeper. For those fortunate enough to find a love from the Southern land, hold on tight, but not too tight.  Treat her right and she will love you until the end of time.

DHEC (South Carolina) Plays Key Roles in Protecting the Public Before, During and After Hurricanes

COLUMBIA, S.C. – As the 2022 hurricane season officially begins, the South Carolina Department of Health and Control (DHEC) reminds residents to be prepared for severe weather and also reminds residents of the key roles DHEC plays in helping our state prepare for, respond to, and recover from weather events such as hurricanes and tropical storms.

While the South Carolina Emergency Management Division is the primary coordinating agency during a severe weather event, DHEC is responsible for several actions and efforts that help protect the public, property, and the environment, including:

  • Overseeing and assisting with the evacuation (and reopening, after the storm) of hospitals and long-term care facilities, when requested by local officials.
  • Coordinating Medical Needs Shelters for people whose medical conditions exceed the capabilities of the general population shelters but are not severe enough to require a hospital stay.
  • Helping ensure our state’s dam owners take preparations to reduce the risk of dam failure; performing in-field pre-and post-storm dam assessments; and providing contractual resources to dam owners, if needed.
  • Utilizing the statewide Care Line call center to provide real-time public health and health-department related information.
  • Closing shellfish harvesting areas that are impacted by high levels of bacteria due to excess rain or other factors during a severe storm.
  • Assisting well owners with monitoring for possible contamination of their well water.
  • Providing health services, like vaccines or WIC (Women, Infants, Children) services through health departments, off-site events or mobile resources.
  • Providing important information about how to return safely to your home after an evacuation, especially after flood waters recede.

DHEC’s Public Health Preparedness Program, which was recently ranked among the top tier nationally for emergency preparedness, is comprised of emergency response professionals who take part in year-long trainings and exercises to help maintain coordination among other state agencies and local communities when severe weather threats and other emergencies occur.

Learn more about DHEC’s role during a severe weather event, at scdhec.gov. Visit the South Carolina Emergency Management Division’s website at www.scemd.org or hurricane.sc for important information about its role as the primary coordinating agency during an emergency event in South Carolina.

For eastern states, the Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30.

Minimalistic Storage Idea

Minimalist decorators and interior décor experts love the idea of including dressers in your home. If you’re a minimalist and love to save time, money, and space, opting for a chest of drawers can be a valuable addition to your house. Speaking of particular decorating style, minimalist is about having clear space and surroundings while making a fashionable statement. So, with chests, you can keep all your things in one place while saving a lot of space.
