South Carolina’s largest city addresses a grimmer aspect of its history with the opening of the International African American Museum
A new year shines a light on an old wrong in Charleston. Known for its Low Country cuisine and walkable urbanism, South Carolina’s largest city addresses a grimmer aspect of its history when the International African American Museum opens on 21 January.
The building is located on Gadsden’s Wharf and faces Charleston Harbor, where ships brought 100,000 enslaved Africans in chains to North America in the 18th and 19th centuries. Nine galleries tell harrowing tales of the Middle Passage and the horrors of plantation life.
But they also uncover stories of the triumph of the enslaved and their enduring cultural contributions, including a section devoted to the Gullah Geechee people who live along the Atlantic coast from the Carolinas to Florida and continue some of the African traditions of their ancestors.
nextOPP Search Founders Named to Entrepreneur’s 100 Women of Influence
Gail Tiburzi Buck and Rebecca Oppenheim Honored with Leadership Recognition for Hire One, Help One Program
Charleston, SC – Gail Tiburzi Buck and Rebecca Oppenheim, founders of leading executive search firm and Certified B Corporation, nextOPP Search, were recently recognized as part of Entrepreneur’s 100 Women of Influence in 2022. The recognition seeks to elevate women changing their respective industries by influencing the world in real and concrete ways.
Buck and Oppenheim were honored for their commitment to supporting women working towards financial security through their Hire One, Help One program. For every candidate hired through its firm, nextOPP donates career coaching services to a survivor of domestic violence.
“The most rewarding part of growing our recruiting firm has been seeing the number of people we’re able to support through our Hire One, Help One program,” said nextOPP co-founder Gail Tiburzi Buck. “As our business expands, so does our ability to help domestic violence victims secure their financial independence. We’re honored to be recognized alongside women who are using their brilliance and innovation to make our world a better place and grateful to Entrepreneur Magazine for providing us an invaluable opportunity to help raise domestic violence awareness, an issue that still lives in the shadows.”
Domestic violence affects millions of individuals across the US regardless of age, economic status, race, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, ability, or education level. Financial abuse, limiting a partner’s access to economic resources, affects 99 percent of domestic violence victims and 74 percent stay in abusive relationships longer because of financial concerns. One in four women will experience domestic violence in their lifetime and survivors on average leave abusive relationships with $10 in their pocket.
“The data around this type of abuse is staggering,” noted nextOPP co-founder Rebecca Oppenheim. “When we were forming our business, we knew we wanted to find a way to give back to this cause. The Hire One, Help One program is purposely embedded into the DNA of our business, and companies that work with us know that they’re not only helping to grow their own organizations but also investing in a sustainable program that empowers independence.”
The Hire One, Help One program was developed in 2018, redefining nextOPP Search as a for-profit for purpose company. By partnering with domestic violence support organizations, nextOne Search is able to offer career coaching to victims and teach essential career skills, including identifying job opportunities, resume development, interviewing best practices, and salary negotiations. The guidance they provide assists individuals affected by financial abuse who need to secure employment to become financially independent.

Bosch on Tuesday announced the start of EV motor production at its Charleston, South Carolina, facility, with expansion plans already on deck for 2023.
Production began earlier this month in a 200,000-square-foot section of an existing building at the Charleston site, Bosch said in a press release. The assembly area includes the production of motor rotors and stators—the main components—as well as the final assembly of the motors, according to the company.
2023 Rivian R1S
Bosch plans to add 75,000 square feet to this building in response to an uptick in business and is spending $260 million on that addition, which is scheduled to be operational by the end of 2023.
A spokesperson confirmed to Green Car Reports that initial production is going to Rivian, while the expansion will serve additional customers the company does not want to name yet. Rivian stands out among EV-only automakers as one of the few outsourcing electric motors. The company views this as a cost-saving measure, although it is shifting to in-house motor tech.
Bosch said motors assembled in Charleston can range in power from 50 kW to 500 kW (67 hp to 670 hp) and from 110 lb-ft of torque to 737 lb-ft. They also feature a voltage range of up to 850 volts, with a claimed 98% efficiency.
Opened in 1974, the facility is a key part of Bosch’s pivot away from internal-combustion tech. The company noted that the building now used for electric motor production was previously used to make diesel-engine components.
Bosch Facility in Anderson, South Carolina
Bosch announced this pivot in 2019 after getting caught up in the Volkswagen diesel scandal. It announced in January 2020 that production of diesel-engine components would slowly ramp down but subsequently clarified that it will continue to invest in internal-combustion engine tech for a long time.
Local hydrogen fuel-cell production is also on the way— for Nikola, among others potentially. Bosch in August announced plans to make fuel cells in Anderson, South Carolina, beginning in 2026. The company is an investor in Nikola, which previously discussed plans to use Bosch tech in its fuel-cell semi-trucks.
