Charleston, S.C. – July 21, 2020 – Local Gullah storyteller, Carolyn E. White, along with local author, Shelia L. Anderson, has just published her memoir, Jabulile, The Gullah Storyteller: The Stories of My Life.

White, a native of James Island, is an award-winning storyteller who has traveled across the country as “Jabulile,” recalling the stories she heard while growing up with her parents and grandparents on then-rural James Island. The book, like a Gullah gumbo, is seasoned with the words and phrases of the Gullah language.

White is proud of her Gullah heritage and enjoys sharing it wherever she goes. Her travels have taken her to far-flung places such as Bismarck, North Dakota, as well as cultural festivals across the Lowcountry.

While this is White’s first book, Anderson, a former educator, has authored several books, including four children’s books. The book is self-published and is available at Amazon.com.

Summary

Having traveled across the country telling the tales of her beloved Gullah culture, like a recipe for a spicy Carolina Lowcountry gumbo, Carolyn E. White shares her own life’s story and the ingredients that went into the making of “Jabulile,” the quintessential Gullah storyteller! Seasoned with the spices of the Gullah language, White’s memoir will make you laugh and cry, as well as ponder a time gone by and its impact that is felt today. You will come away with your spirit uplifted and a renewed appreciation for life and, perhaps, your own story. You will feel the spirit of “Jabulile!”

CARTA, TOWN OF JAMES ISLAND CUT RIBBON ON CAMP-FOLLY BUS STOP SHELTER

Town funded construction of the new structure

James Island, S.C. (Oct. 22, 2018) – Charleston Regional Transportation Authority (CARTA) and Town of James Island officials today cut the ribbon on the transit system’s newest shelter at the intersection of Camp Road and Folly Road.

The Town funded the $32,000 shelter, built on land provided by Walgreens. The structure was part of the Charleston County-led Camp Road at Folly Road Intersection Improvement Project.

“This is an excellent example of partnership among multiple government agencies and the private sector,” said CARTA board of directors chairman Mike Seekings. “The CARTA board thanks to the Town of James Island for funding the shelter, Walgreen’s for providing the necessary easement and Charleston County for their role in the project.”

“The Town recognizes the importance of public transit on James Island and placing a shelter at this important intersection made sense,” James Island Mayor Bill Woolsey said. “We also hope to find further ways to partner with CARTA in the future.”

The ribbon cutting comes ahead of a public meeting next week to discuss possible service changes on James Island that potentially include shorter headways and more trips per day. The meeting will be held from 3-7 p.m. on Oct. 29 at St. James Presbyterian Church, 1314 Secessionville Road.

Elsewhere in the system, CARTA is in the midst of constructing more than 60 shelters this fall.

Tiger Lily Opens Second Location on James Island; Completes Downtown Renovation

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston’s award-winning florist Tiger Lily has opened a second location on James Island, giving locals even more access to their favorite flower shop.

A Charleston staple for more than 20 years, Tiger Lily now has a state-of-the-art floral design studio and retail shop at 1614 Camp Road. Tiger Lily owners Manny and Clara Gonzales have been overseeing the renovation of the 4,000-square-foot facility for the last several months.

The James Island location is designed with an open concept, allowing customers to watch the floral artisans at work in the design studio. The new location will be their main hub housing all floral production for daily and wedding operations, consultations for weddings, customer service and sales assistants, delivery vehicles and administrative offices.

Tiger Lily will maintain their presence at its original location at 131 Spring St. A portion of the Spring Street building has been renovated into a modern urban floral boutique. The remaining 5,800 square feet is available for lease. They purchased the Spring Street location in 2004, renovating the abandoned 1920s service station. For their efforts, they were awarded the prestigious Carolopolis Awards from the Preservation Society of Charleston.

“We’re really grateful for the support of the Charleston community over the last two decades, and we’re excited to give James Island and West Ashley residents easier access to our services,” said Manny Gonzales. “At the same time, we love our downtown location and certainly didn’t want to move from the Cannonborough-Elliottborough neighborhood we have grown to love. We feel confident our customers will appreciate having two locations for greater access to our floral services.”

Over the last two decades, Tiger Lily has established itself as a leader in the Charleston floral industry with its attention to customer service, its floral design excellence for weddings and its charitable efforts. The company regularly partners with area nonprofits for its Charity in Bloom program, and Tiger Lily participates in the annual “Petal It Forward” program giving away hundreds of flowers. Tiger Lily has been named Charleston’s Best Florist since 2000.

About Tiger Lily
Inspired by the beauty and sophistication of Charleston, Manny and Clara Gonzales started Tiger Lily in 1996. Their goal was simple: Be the best florist in Charleston. Since then, Tiger Lily has grown to be the largest florist in South Carolina and has been Voted “Charleston’s Best Florist” every year since 2000. For more information, visit www.tigerlilyflorist.com or stop by one of their two locations at 131 Spring St. in downtown Charleston or 1614 Camp Road on James Island.

When Art Loses to Development in Charleston

By Mark A. Leon

For those of you that have spent time or live in the James Island area, you are all too familiar with the strip mall that housed the old Cha Cha’s Mexican Restaurant and Bar and Rogue Motion, now in the hear of West Ashley.  That was a place that still holds special memories for me.  A place where I established new friendships that remain today.  That piece of real estate between Gold’s Gym and the Brick House Kitchen is nothing more than piles of rubble now, making way for a new look and feel of James Island and Charleston.

Yet, behind the rubble, lies a reminder of some of the creative street art that has given Charleston is creative flavor and unique voice.  These remains, are another reminder of a different time, a different place, where the dollar wasn’t the dominate force that drove the decisions in this community.

This was a time and place where community, affordability, art and music, family and tradition were our foundation.

Today, we walked the grounds one last time to say goodbye to another piece of our history as we await the likes of a Target Store to reinforce the new landscape of Charleston.
