Topgolf’s 87th global venue is located 10 miles from downtown Charleston

DALLAS, Jan. 11, 2023 – More play is coming Charleston’s way: Modern golf entertainment leader Topgolf announced today it will open its 87th global venue on Friday, Jan. 20. Located at 5000 Topgolf Way in North Charleston, the venue will be near the Charleston Area Convention Center and the Tanger Outlets at International Boulevard.

“Charleston is an ideal community for Topgolf – it has a fun, vibrant culture with people seeking new and exciting experiences,” said Topgolf Chief Operating Officer Gen Gray. “We’ve been eager to bring our style of play to Charleston and are excited to offer a place where people can have fun and not take themselves too seriously.”

Players at Topgolf Charleston will be welcomed to 72 climate-controlled hitting bays spanning two levels. The idea: Players take aim at on-field targets and rack up points based on the game they choose to play. To take the experience up a notch, the venue is fully equipped with Topgolf’s Toptracer ball-tracking technology, enabling Players to track their ball’s flight path and metrics while playing virtual courses or games like Angry Birds.

Adding to the good time, Players will also have access to a nine-hole mini-golf course, a full-service restaurant with chef-inspired menu items, top-shelf drinks, music and year-round family-friendly programming. With large private event rooms, Topgolf Charleston will be the perfect place to host any occasion – from birthdays and bachelorette parties to corporate retreats and meetings.

Grads, Family and Friends Celebrate Biggest-Ever Class of Innovative N. Charleston Charter High School

North Charleston, SC – January 6, 2023 – As schools across South Carolina and the nation struggle with helping students regain lost ground due to the Covid-19 pandemic, an innovative public charter high school celebrated its largest-ever class of graduates on Friday.

“That’s my boy!” one mother shouted as new grad Derrell Felder crossed the stage. His grandmother joyfully added, “That’s my grandson!”

“Many of our students struggled in, or had dropped out of, traditional schools. But they have hit the ground running here — and it’s so exciting to see them achieve their goal of a high school diploma, ” said Dr. Jacinta Bryant, South Carolina Director for Acceleration Academies. Lowcountry Director Amber Speights added, “We have seen exponential growth since the academy opened in the fall term of 2021. We are thrilled to help our young learners make their dreams a reality.”

One of the new grads is Natalie Allen, an 18-year-old who had felt overwhelmed in the crowded classrooms of a traditional high school but found the calm, studious atmosphere and one-on-one coaching provided at Lowcountry Acceleration Academy to be just what she needed. On Friday, she graduated a semester ahead of schedule and will soon embark on the college studies she hopes will lead her to the Medical University of South Carolina and a career as a neurologist specializing in the treatment of  premature babies.

“We all have the power to change the world, and I don’t mean that in a cringy way,” Natalie said in address to her classmates and the family, friends and educators who had gathered to celebrate them. “I don’t mean we will all become presidents or astronauts. I mean that although we are all the main characters of our own story, that doesn’t mean we don’t have the power to make an impact in someone else’s story.

“This leads me to acknowledge the school that guided us to this point today,” she continued. “Lowcountry Acceleration Academy has helped us all grow as people: With teachers that motivated us when we had our down days, with an environment that helped us all to feel comfortable and confident. This school changed us.”

Research has shown that student progress suffered when the Covid pandemic closed school buildings and forced an abrupt shift to full- or part-time remote learning beginning in 2020. According to the federal Department of Education, those losses were particularly steep for students of color, LGBTQ students and those from economically disadvantaged communities — all groups that Lowcountry Acceleration Academy serves with a personalized approach rather than a one-size-fits-all curriculum.

The academy is located at 5935 Rivers Ave. in North Charleston and accepts new students on an ongoing basis. Students are able to do coursework at an individualized pace, taking advantage of intensive one-on-one coaching on the academy campus and via Zoom and phone tutoring sessions. Like all public schools, Lowcountry Acceleration Academy provides a high school education at no cost to students and their families.

$10.27 billion in announced capital investment, most in state history

The South Carolina Department of Commerce today released its 2022 industry recruitment results which reflect historic economic activity. From January to December 2022, the state announced total capital investment of $10.27 billion, the single largest year in state history. That investment represents 120 projects and the creation of 14,083 new jobs.

“It’s no accident or surprise that South Carolina is breaking economic development records,” said Gov. Henry McMaster. “We have consistently proven that our people are among the most talented and hard-working in the world, that we’re committed to fostering a competitive business-friendly environment, and that there is no better place to live, work, and raise a family. These historic achievements are a direct result of the South Carolinians who make our state great and understand the value of hard work.”

Industry recruitment soared in multiple categories in 2022. The record-breaking capital investment of $10.27 billion reflects a 118% increase over 2017, and announced investments in rural South Carolina in 2022 increased 30% over 2017. While domestic-based companies represented the majority of announced investments, overall foreign direct investment (FDI) in 2022 increased 371% over 2021.

“South Carolina’s 2022 industry recruitment is not only one for the record books, but it also reinforces that our state is leading this transformational time in business,” said Secretary of Commerce Harry M. Lightsey III. “We are cultivating an increasingly diverse, technologically advanced economy that will continue to create opportunities for our citizens for generations to come.”
