MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (May 6, 2021) –Interested in having your organization performpieces of cultural significance to the community? Are you an exhibitor and would like to showcase items of cultural interest? The Mount Pleasant Youth Council is sponsoring a fair and now is your chance to sign up to perform or exhibit at the first-ever Youth Council Cultural Fair slated for Saturday, May 22, from 8 a.m. to 12 noon, at the Park West Recreation Center, 1251 Park West Blvd.    

All activities are free to the public. All performers must arrive at the stage and be ready to perform no later than 15 minutes prior to scheduled performance time. 

Performance times depend on the number of entries. Please list all special requests on the Performer information sheet you are returning. We are asking for your help to curtail disturbing and potentially dangerous activities.

In the recent months, North Charleston Police officers have faced challenges from large groups of unsupervised juveniles, leading to fights, disruption of businesses, and disturbing the peace in retail locations. These incidents have occurred in the evening around Northwoods Mall, Tanger Outlets, and Frankie’s Fun Park, among others.

Northwoods Mall, Tanger Outlet, Frankie’s Fun Park, and the Northwoods Cinema each have a policy requiring parental supervision of juveniles (under 17 years old) after 6:00pm or 7:00pm, and we are asking parents to adhere to these reasonable guidelines set forth by these businesses.

Lowcountry Land Trust Celebrates 35th Anniversary with $150,000 May Giving Challenge

CHARLESTON, S.C. — Lowcountry Land Trust is hosting a May Giving Challenge with the goal of raising $150,000 to celebrate its anniversary and further its work protecting vital Lowcountry lands and waterways. 

This year, Lowcountry Land Trust is celebrating its 35th anniversary and approaching a new milestone: preserving 500 properties encompassing 150,000 total acres. The May Giving Challenge will take place May 17 to May 23. As fundraising benchmarks are reached throughout the week, $45,000 in combined  challenge funds from the Pathfinder Foundation, Silent Maid, and Painted Bunting Fund will be unlocked.

To date, the nonprofit organization has protected more than 147,000 acres across 17 counties in South Carolina. Protected lands include the Angel Oak, Boone Hall in Mount Pleasant, and as well as vast forests and marshlands across the Lowcountry. 

“We are so proud of 35 years of conservation work. Charleston, S.C.- Folly Beach-based nonprofit, Warrior Surf Foundation (WSF), which provides Veterans, active duty service members, and their families with alternative surf therapy, yoga, and wellness coaching, is joining forces with Fight Oar Die– an all-American, all-military Veteran, four-man ocean rowing team that competes in the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge. A 3,000-mile race across the Atlantic Ocean from San Sebastian in Spain to the English Harbour, Antigua, and brings together teams from all walks of life united by the same objective: to take on the unique challenge of crossing an ocean in a rowing boat. 

In an effort to “leverage their access to mental health services and resources for Warrior Surf Veterans, both organizations have agreed to provide programmatic support and reciprocal referral services to each other to benefit their respective Veterans. In preparation for the Challenge, WSF will introduce their Wellness Director Jordan Watkins to Fight Oar Die’s mental health resources. WSF aims to enhance the row team’s mental health before their competition, and Fight Oar Die will, in turn, leverage access to mental health services and resources for Warrior Surf Veterans.

“We are thrilled to collaborate and offer our services to another incredible Veteran-led organization,” shares Watkins. “We’ve seen significant changes in the Veterans who participate in our program, and are looking forward to helping to prepare the men of Fight Oar Die for their big race later this year.”

Both WSF and Fight Oar Die missions’ are in alignment to bring awareness to the challenges Veterans face during reintegration, and facilitate an alternative method for their growth and overall well-being.

Keep North Charleston Beautiful Volunteers are Plogging for our Planet!

Keep North Charleston Beautiful is excited to launch a new program designed to reduce litter in the North Charleston community. Starting today, volunteers will be plogging for our planet!

What is plogging?

Plogging is the combination of picking up litter while jogging. The activity was first started in 2016 and is a great way for individuals to keep their community clean while staying active.

Individuals who register for Keep North Charleston Beautiful’s plogging program will receive a free plogging kit. All supplies are limited and available on a first come, first served basis.

A typical plogging kit may include: a litter pickup stick, trash bags, vinyl gloves, a face covering, hand sanitizer packets, a reflective safety vest, and a reusable sport pack to store your supplies and keep with you while plogging.

This program and many others are made possible through a grant from PalmettoPride and Keep South Carolina Beautiful. Keep North Charleston Beautiful is the proud recipient of an $8,850 Keep South Carolina  Beautiful Annual Support Grant from PalmettoPride to support litter reduction programs in South Carolina.
