40 PAs from Across the Country to Provide Nutrition Education to the Public

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (July 31, 2020) —The PA Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the American Academy of PAs (AAPA), recently selected 40 PAs (physician assistants) from across the country to be a part of the foundation’s new Nutrition Outreach Fellowship.

Through the fellowship, PAs will receive special training and resources on nutrition to both enhance their clinical practice and to give back to their healthcare peers and the community at large.

As part of the program, each fellow will deliver nutrition education to a minimum of 100 consumers and 100 healthcare peers over the course of the fellowship year. Content will focus on the role of nutrition in overall health with a special focus on the management of type 2 diabetes, healthy aging, and Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS). This program is generously supported by Abbott Nutrition.

PA Foundation Executive Director Lynette Sappe-Watkins, CFRE, said the fellows will follow a dual-track, providing the nutrition resources to both consumers and their peers in healthcare.

“This program is especially timely as people living with chronic health conditions such as diabetes may be facing challenges in maintaining proper nutrition during this unusual time of social distancing. In these current circumstances people may have limited access to nutritious foods and even limited access to healthcare providers,” Sappe-Watkins said. “The Nutrition Outreach Fellows are PAs who have stepped up to be a part of an effort to provide knowledge to people in their communities about nutrition topics that will hopefully inspire dialog on nutrition between providers and patients. The Fellows will be stepping outside of their practice to help individuals in their communities learn more about an area of preventative care that has an immediate impact on their health and well-being.”

Faculty for this program are Allyson Hamacher, MPAS, PA-C, RD of Phoenix, Ariz., who practices in neurology at the Mayo Clinic; and Matthew Wright, MS, PA-C, RD of Branchburg, N.J., a faculty member at the Rutgers University PA program.

Groundbreaking ceremony held at John McCants Veterans Park (Goose Creek, SC)

A late afternoon shower stopped just in time for a special groundbreaking ceremony Thursday, as the construction of John McCants Veterans Park officially began in Goose Creek.

The late – and much-beloved – Goose Creek City Councilmember for whom the park is named was represented at the ceremony by his wife Christena and his family, as well as a host of friends and community leaders. Goose Creek Mayor Greg Habib, City Council members, and Goose Creek Recreation Commission members joined the McCants family for the groundbreaking.

The park will include a playground, walking trail, dog park, multi-purpose lawn, and a Veterans Honor Plaza. The Goose Creek Recreation facility will replace the current Dennis Park, and expand well beyond its borders across Anita Drive.

Mayor Habib said the park will do three important things: honor Mr. McCants, honor the City’s Veterans, and fulfill a promise the City made to the Berkeley County School District to build a park on a section of the property acquired from the district several years ago.

Mayor Habib called the fact that the park will bear Mr. McCants’ name and called the 24-year City Councilman a mentor and friend.

“Mrs. McCants thought I forgot about Mr. McCants,” Mayor Habib said to chuckles in the audience. “But anyone who knew Mr. McCants knows that you don’t forget about Mr. McCants. He was a tremendous human being.

“This park will lift this community up. It will honor our veterans like we have never honored our veterans before, and it will carry on the legacy of Mr. McCants. We are very proud of this project.”

U.S. Sen. Tim Scott was represented at the ceremony by his Senate Office’s Regional Director Al Jenkins, who presented a special wreath to Mrs. McCants.

An estimated finish date has not yet been set for the park’s construction, but the City is planning a celebration when the project is complete.

Bank of America Connects Charleston and Myrtle Beach-Area Youth to Workforce Success Through Paid Virtual Summer Leadership Experience

Student Leaders underlines bank’s ongoing commitment to connect young people to jobs, skills-building and opportunities to strengthen our community

South Carolina – Bank of America today announced that the four Coastal South Carolina high school students selected as Student Leaders (#BofAStudentLeaders) have started their paid summer internship experience of leadership, civic engagement, and workforce skills-building.  In light of the health concerns that remain in local communities, the program has been adapted to a virtual format, through which students had the opportunity to participate in sessions exposing them to the vital role that nonprofits play in advancing community health, the importance of public-private partnerships to advance social change and a focus on building financial acumen.

The Class of 2020 Coastal South Carolina Bank of America Student Leaders are:

  • Caelan Bailey, Wando, Academic Magnet High School
  • Isabela Cawley, Mount Pleasant, Charleston County School of the Arts
  • Claire Hains, Conway, Horry County Schools Scholars Academy
  • Caroline Morgan, Murrells Inlet, Horry County Schools Scholars Academy
Caelan Bailey
Isabela Cawley
Claire Hains

Caroline Morgan

Coastal South Carolina Student Leaders participated in programming that leverages Bank of America’s national partnerships and expertise and worked closely with the bank’s Charleston and Myrtle Beach leadership and nonprofit partners. They enjoyed a collaborative, mentoring-focused project working closely with Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Lowcountry to work on social media strategies and in the creation of a story bank tool designed to collect stories and anecdotes from Big Brothers Big Sisters participants.  In addition, Student Leaders engaged in conversations focused on social justice, civil rights, and how to build a more diverse and inclusive society and had the opportunity to gain a better understanding of their personal finances through Better Money Habits®, Bank of America’s financial wellness and education platform.

“As we build our new organization, inspiring our community to get involved is key.  Whether we are recruiting men and mentors of colors to become mentors, or we are inspiring caring neighbors to invest in the Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Lowcountry mission, telling our story is critical,” explains the organization’s president and chief executive officer, Merridith Crowe.  “We are so grateful to Bank of America and its young leader volunteers.  Their project to collect best practice examples and create a library of resources for our work moving forward is such a gift, especially since we are a small, but mighty staff.”

Bringing students from across the country together in order to discuss the role of citizenship and how cross-sector collaboration creates community impact is a core component of the Student Leaders program.  This year, 300 students will gather virtually for Young America Together at Home program, delivered by the Close Up Foundation, which will include discussion of finding one’s voice in order to effect change and pressing policy issues such as the economy, healthcare, the environment, and immigration.

“Now more than ever, as we collectively navigate the challenges we face in our communities, we remain committed to supporting youth and young adults of all backgrounds by connecting them to jobs, skills-building, and leadership development,” said Kim Wilkerson, Bank of America’s South Carolina State President. “Creating opportunities for our youth to gain skills and build a network is a powerful investment in the future of our community.”

In the wake of significant job losses nationwide, the ability to earn a paycheck will be essential to many young people whether they are helping to support their families or planning for the future. As part of their Student Leader experience, each student received a $5,000 stipend to recognize them for their community achievements

Recent estimates suggest that the number of disconnected youth – those who aren’t in school and don’t have a job – has likely tripled since last year and could be as high as 18 million. Without access to opportunities that build career skills, many young people may be left behind, leading to high rates of youth unemployment and hindering overall economic progress. In addition to Student Leaders, the bank invests in summer jobs for young people through its partnerships with the Boys and Girls Club of the Grand Strand as well as Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce’s job shadow program through which high school students gain valuable workforce skills. This summer, Bank of America is connecting approximately 3,000 young adults to summer jobs through partnerships with nonprofits and local mayors and its own Student Leaders® program.

The city of Goose Creek mourns the passing of John M. Bryant

This week we mourn the death of John M. Bryant, a true leader in the history of Goose Creek. Mr. Bryant was a founding member of the Goose Creek Parks and Playgrounds (Recreation) Commission and served as its chairman for many years.

“Mr. Bryant’s contributions to our City cannot be overstated,” Mayor Habib said. “His leadership laid the foundation for Goose Creek Recreation and all it would become. In many ways, felt by many people, Goose Creek was enriched by his service, shaped by his vision, uplifted by his actions, and left better than it was before. We are grateful for his life, and we are saddened by his passing.”

Former Goose Creek Mayor Michael Heitzler called Mr. Bryant a strong advocate for the community.

“He was one of our early philosophical thinkers,” Dr. Heitzler said. “What do we want for Goose Creek? For him, Recreation was always at the top of that list. He was an early part of the movement to develop a Recreation Commission that would later become part of the City.”

Services for Mr. Bryant were held today. Visit https://www.russellfuneralchapel.net/obituary/John-M-Bryant to read more about his life.
