SC Ports graduates 26 Port Ambassadors (Charleston, SC)

CHARLESTON, SC — JUNE 7, 2022 — South Carolina Ports celebrates the graduation of its 2021-2022 Port Ambassador Class, with each delegate having gained a deep understanding of how SC Ports connects to South Carolina’s economy.

The SC Ports’ Port Ambassador Program is a yearlong curriculum that provides an in-depth look into port operations. Ambassadors see firsthand how SC Ports works every day to handle goods for businesses, advanced manufacturers, mega retailers and agricultural producers.

“Ambassadors learn the importance of having a world-class port in South Carolina and the need to invest wisely in infrastructure to keep the supply chain fluid, especially given today’s supply chain challenges,” SC Ports CEO Jim Newsome said.

This year’s class consisted of 26 delegates from around the state, hailing from a variety of industries. Throughout the year, ambassadors heard from SC Ports’ teammates, legislators and business leaders. They toured port-dependent businesses, inland ports and port terminals, including Leatherman Terminal, the country’s newest container terminal.

“The ability to see port operations up close — and knowing that each container filled with goods represents an economic opportunity — was very impactful,” said Jody Bryson, president and CEO of S.C. Technology and Aviation Center in Greenville. “We were able to see the connection between the goods moving through Port of Charleston and the jobs being created at port-dependent businesses throughout the state.”

The Port Ambassador Program is designed to increase public awareness and understanding of SC Ports’ strategic initiatives and infrastructure projects. Since the program’s inception in 2016, more than 100 ambassadors have graduated.

“Our Port Ambassador Program provides an opportunity to see how the supply chain works, and it highlights the significant impact SC Ports makes on our state’s economy,” said Jordi Yarborough, SC Ports’ senior vice president of community engagement. “We were thrilled to have such a diverse and esteemed group of professionals for our fifth class of port ambassadors.”

We are Family Brings Joy to Queer South Carolinians’ at the Charleston Queer Youth Prom – New Video by Southern Equality

For two years, the LGBTQ+ and allied community across South Carolina came together to push back on a slate of anti-transgender legislation.

Several bills specifically targeted trans and queer youth, attempting to single out and marginalize young people. In the same month that two anti-LGBTQ+ bills passed, dozens of queer youth came together for We Are Family’s Queer Youth Prom in Charleston.

Remember: Our existence is our resistance. No one – and no discriminatory bill – can take away LGBTQ+ joy.

Nature Adventures (Mount Pleasant, SC) Participates in EPA Roundtable on the Importance of Clean Water Protections in the Southeast

For Immediate Release: June 8, 2022

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – Matt Gamble, a Nature Adventures manager and guide, participated in a June 7 virtual roundtable hosted jointly by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Cahaba Brewing Co. on the importance of clean water protections in the Southeast.

Gamble joined stakeholders from a broad spectrum of land and water users who live or work across the Southeast. Participants included a director of a water and sewer utility; general contracting and construction management executive; mitigation banker; faith leader; environmental justice advocates; farmers; elected officials; representatives from conservation and environmental organizations; and clean water scientists.

In the Southeast, water is a way of life. Regional streams, rivers, lakes, estuaries, and oceans are central to the area’s history, culture, and economy. Compared to other regions, the Southeast has more miles of streams and more acres of wetlands.

Located on Shem Creek in Mount Pleasant, Nature Adventure offers kayak and paddleboarding tours to locals and visitors.

“Throughout our region, families, businesses, and communities depend on these waters for drinking, fishing, hunting, paddling, as a guard against flooding and pollution, and to sustain a burgeoning tourism industry,” Gamble said. “We depend on consistent minimum federal standards to safeguard clean water and protect our everyday life.”

Gamble discussed the significance of ensuring strong protections for natural habitats. He highlighted the harm upstream activities can have on water quality downstream, especially on a small, family-owned company such as Nature Adventures.

A strong Clean Water Act helps protect the tourism industry and allows the public to experience untouched nature and enjoy outdoor activities, Gamble said.

Nature Adventures co-owner Ben-Jamin Toy pointed to the EPA’s Clean Water Act as a key player in protecting waters used for outdoor recreation in the Lowcountry and across South Carolina.

“Our beautiful Shem Creek is a clear example of why strong protections under the Clean Water Act are key to maintaining access to outdoor tourism on our rivers, streams, and estuaries,” Toy said.
