How often is the appetizer the must indulgent part of the meal?  The savory essence of a truly amazing dining experience.  Often times, restaurants will offer up a preamble that outshines the meal, a piece of culinary heaven let us say.  There are some appetizers/snacks in the Low country that truly define the culinary arts in this foodie haven we call Charleston, SC.  We want to offer up some of the most indulgent, flavorful starters to whet your appetite.

  • GyozaCo: 340 King Street, Charleston, SC – The pork and ginger gyoza sided with a soy scallion sauce set the Co gyoza apart from the fine offerings of Ichiban and Basil.  When asked why, a local resident replied, “It reminds me of ravioli or stuffed pastas which I love and when dipped, the flavors pop.”  This dish will start your evening at $5.00.
  • Ceviche167 Raw:  289 East Bay Street, Charleston, SC –  This $14.00 dish changes daily.  So that being said, how can we add it to the list of some of our favorites if it changes?  Very simple, quality of ingredients and masterful understanding of how to make a truly memorable ceviche.  Starting with the homemade chips that are lightly toasted with the thickness and texture of pita and then add some of the freshest seafood and ingredients Charleston offers and you will walk away so very happy.

Taylor Franta is a visionary photographer that adds a fantasy element to the Charleston landscape.  The vision of this photographic artist is showered with energy and amazement.  We are so pleased to share the talents of this artist with you.  A very special thank you to Taylor for exposing use to this magical journey of photographic arts.

Taylor Franta – Bio

Born and raised in Missouri, Taylor has always had a knack for any and every activity pertaining to the outdoors.  In late high school he picked up his first camera and has been hooked ever since.  Taylor moved to Charleston mid-2015 and has since been photographing landscape scenes around the lowcountry.
Contrary to many photographers, his goal is not a photograph a scene exactly as it is witnessed at any one moment but instead aims to portray the impressions that a scene gives over time in order to provide the whole experience.  Because of this, he tends to lean on many alternative photographic techniques both in camera and in post production and often blends several photographs taken over a period of time.  If you can imagine yourself in the scene witnessing it for yourself then Taylor knows he was able to embody this philosophy.

Beyond the Caffeine: Metto Coffee & Tea Brings It Home with a Smile

By Mark A. Leon

In the heart of the constant flow of traffic moving swiftly down Coleman Boulevard in Mount Pleasant, lies a corner coffee house on the intersection of Coleman and Broadway Street, Metto Coffee & Tea.  Today’s single origin java offering includes a bold citrus cocoa blend and on tap for the specialty lovers is a cherry hazelnut latte.  After you are settled by the fragrant aroma of warm and tingling coffee, the welcoming culture will sweep you away.

Metto, doesn’t just look for a barista with the skill of creating the perfect latte or espresso.  They seek out artists who embody warmth and genuine passion for the creative canvas of the mug.  Rarely will you order a foamed drink without a leaf, smile or other artistic signature brimming over the top.  Before your wallet has exited your pocket, you are greeted with a hello and a smile from the entire staff.  This is not masked hospitality, but a genuine connection to the customer and that is why the loyalty factor is so high.

There is a warmth the goes on inside the walls of this intimate coffee shop which offers only six tables and two lounge chairs on the inside and five tables and a bench on the outside.  Ordained on the walls are flyers for events from yoga to ballet, music to art.  The local decor is highlighted with featured artist paintings or photography.  An inviting penetration of the local arts scene throughout.

We don’t want to downplay the food.  With an outstanding assortment of sandwiches, wraps, quiche, fruit and salads, Metto is a hot spot for locals, bikers and bridge runners.  Exceptional credit to the soft and abundantly flavorful muffins and the Prosciutto and Brie Panini.  There is an extraordinary blast of flavor and fresh ingredients which are a permanent fixture at Metto in all its freshly prepared daily food offerings.

With an eclectic customer base, on any given day you may find patrons from age five to eighty-five.  This is a testimony to the welcoming open arms culture created here.

Often, we plan an early morning five mile walk to each end of the Cooper River Bridge and that walk does not begin without a cup of Metto resting comfortably in our hands.

As a writing, I surround myself by elements of inspiration, where I can feel comfortable, be around creative and passionate people and feed off of the ambiance.  Metto is one of those rare places.  I won’t lie, sometimes you can be distracted when the staff screams in excitement or breaks into a little dance or song from the audio above.

Metto is located at 354 West Coleman Boulevard, Mount Pleasant, SC.

Merits of Adding the New Mount Pleasant Cruise Dock Port

By Mark A. Leon

I had the esteemed privilege of being part of a very insightful discussion about the new proposed cruise port in Mount Pleasant with some people very close to the design of this major Mount Pleasant initiative.  After lengthy discussion, it became clear that there are several merits supporting this move.  It also came to my attention, that not all the relevant information has been understood by some that oppose or don’t fully understand the move.

Here are some bullet points you should know about this initiative that will show the value it will add to the Mount Pleasant, SC community.

  • The ships will only be docking initially about once a week.  There will be no adding of new passengers and unlike the Carnival Cruise ships we are accustomed to seeing, these vessels will only house about 200 plus passengers.
  • These will be high end cruise ships with affluent customers.  These customers will be a higher potential spending stream into the Mount Pleasant economy.
  • Passengers will utilize private buses to participate in day trips to places such as Boones Hall Plantation and the USS Yorktown.  This will not have an adverse effect on traffic adding more vehicles to the road ways.
  • Security for passengers on land will be maintained by off duty Mount Pleasant officers who will be receiving overtime and helping bring further financial support into our local law enforcement.
  • The ships will dock between Fort Sumter and Sullivan’s Island and take a water taxi to land.  Unless you are on the Arthur J. Ravenel Jr. Bridge or parts of the harbor, you will not notice the ship and given its size, it will blend into the aesthetics of the harbor.
  • These ships will be charged tourism tax in which part of that tax will go back into the Mount Pleasant budget to support road infrastructure improvements and more.
  • The ships will dock in the morning and depart by late afternoon.  The impact on the water ways of the harbor will be minimal and will not affect daily harbor activity.

Overall, this proposal brings in pure tourism revenue to the sites, attractions, retail and dining for Mount Pleasant, limited effect on traffic, additional funding for improvements in the city and extra opportunities for local law enforcement to gain revenue.

In additional, the Coast Guard and Homeland Security have provided their thumbs up and support for the proposal.  This is strong collective effort that has a promising impact one of the fastest growing cities in the United States and will also bring awareness to some of the magnificent offerings Mount Pleasant possesses.

Mount Pleasant Pediatric Dental Wants to Remind You of the Importance of Tooth Care

KIDS TEETH REMINDS PARENTS THAT BABY TEETH MATTER TOO

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – How many times have parents said, “But
they’re just baby teeth.” Pediatric dentists find a common tendency
among parents to dismiss those early baby teeth as unimportant simply
because they will eventually be replaced by permanent teeth as the child
grows.

Mount Pleasant pediatric dental office Kids Teeth is using National
Children’s Dental Health Month in February to remind parents and
caregivers that baby teeth do indeed matter both in a child’s
short-term development and for long-term dental health.

Primary or baby teeth are important for many reasons:

* They help children speak clearly and chew naturally.

* They aid in dental development, to hold space in the jaws for
permanent teeth. When a baby tooth is lost too early, the permanent
teeth can drift into the empty space and make it difficult for other
adult teeth to find room when they come in. This can make teeth crooked
or crowded.

* Good habits start early. Teaching children to care for their primary
teeth plays a critical role in how they care for their permanent teeth.

Parents who don’t take their children to the dentist at an early age
or don’t fill cavities in baby teeth in a timely matter face bigger
dental issues down the road. Depending on the age of the child, the
tooth could remain in the mouth for several years before they lose it on
their own. That means the cavity will grow and eventually cause severe
pain and discomfort.

Neglecting early dental care also can cause damage to the permanent
tooth and potentially result in spacing issues as permanent teeth
emerge. A non-functioning tooth makes chewing and speaking more
difficult.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends children see a
pediatric dentist by 12 months of age or within 6 months after their
first tooth appears.

“The idea of such early dental visits is still surprising to many new
parents,” said Dr. Mike Myers. “We are continually educating parents
on the important of early dental care.”

National studies are showing preschool-aged children are getting more
cavities. In fact, one in four children in the United States has had at
least one cavity by the age of 4, and many kids get cavities as early as
age 2.

“Taking your child to the pediatric dentist at a young age is the best
way to prevent tooth decay and promote a healthy mouth,” Myers said.
“We help parents learn how to properly clean their child’s teeth and
maintain a lifetime of good oral health.”

To promote good dental health, Kids Teeth is hosting a Healthy Smile
Selfie Contest. During the month of February, take a photo of your
children practicing good dental hygiene – brushing, flossing, drinking
water, eating healthy foods, etc. Upload it to your Facebook page and
tag @kidsteethsc or share on Instagram using #healthysmileselfie.

For each entry submitted in the contest, Kids Teeth will donate $1 to
Windwood Farm, a home for boys who have been abused or neglected.

The winner will receive one year of free dental care and kid’s Fitbit
(grand prize valued at $560 and includes two exams, two fluoride
treatments, two prophy treatments (polishing) and two bitewing X-rays).
One entry per child, per household; entrants do not have to be current
Kids Teeth patients to be eligible to win.
