Check for Over $2,000 Given to Benefit School’s Community Outreach Program

MOUNT PLEASANT, SC, March 15 –  Six local artists generously presented Belle Hall Elementary (BHE) with a check for over $2,000 from proceeds collected at their recent Belle Hall Art Show to be used for the school’s Backpack Buddy program.

The Backpack Buddy program is designed to fight weekend hunger. Thousands of children in our community rely on free or reduced meals they receive at school. Children at BHE who experience hunger are enrolled in the program, and each Friday during the school year receive a backpack containing nutritious food to eat over the weekend.

“This charitable donation will be used to purchase food for the remainder of this year and into the next for children who rely on our involvement to provide them with healthy food on the weekends,” said BHE’s school nurse, Kathy Nash. “Thanks to this donation, we’re in the process of configuring a way to extend the program through the summer, which is something we’ve always wanted to do, but haven’t had the resources for until now.”

Belle Hall Art Show participants involved with the donation include: Sandi Buscemi, Susan Colwell, Joyce Corns, Jeny McCullough, Debbie Poynter and Debb Warren.

Wando High School Marching Band Places Sixth in the Nation

The Wando Marching Band made history with its best finish ever in the Bands of America Grand National Championships this weekend, coming in sixth place at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana. The Grand National Championships is recognized as the premier marching band event in the nation.

The field competition featured 108 bands in preliminary competition on Thursday and Friday, with 37 bands advancing to semifinals during the day on Saturday. Twelve bands advanced to the finals on Saturday evening, and Wando placed sixth among with a score of 93.95 (the Warrior’s highest score ever in the Grand National Championships).

This is Wando High School’s fifth appearance at Grand Nationals and Wando’s fifth year making it to the finals. Only two other bands from South Carolina participated in the championships this year, Fort Mill High School and Nation Ford High School.

The title for Wando’s show this year was “By a Thread,” which was based on the works of Alexander Calder. Senior, Davis Ginn, was proud of his final performance as a Wando Warrior.

“We had three amazing performances, and most of the groups who placed ahead of us have won a national championship,” explained Ginn. “We are very proud of our performances at Grand Nationals & proud to represent Wando and the state of South Carolina.”

The Wando Band faced several obstacles this season, from Hurricane Florence taking away a week’s worth of rehearsals to Tropical Storm Michael stealing a day right before this competition. Before their first regional championship win in school history, the speaker system malfunctioned, and the band had to perform with no electronics for the entire show. They persevered and won the entire competition.

The Warriors dealt with adversity again on the way to Grand Nationals. The prop truck broke down in Kentucky (5 hours from Indianapolis), so the band had to rehearse without any props, tubas, percussion, or color guard flags before the preliminary performance. Fortunately, the truck arrived shortly before the band took the field.

Mount Pleasant Couple Takes Over CrossFit Charleston

CHARLESTON, S.C. – One of the Charleston area’s longest-running CrossFit facilities has new owners. Mount Pleasant couple Clint and Holly Fisher have purchased CrossFit Charleston just off Clements Ferry Road.

They purchased CrossFit Charleston from Joshua Hartzell, who helped start the local affiliate almost 10 years ago. Hartzell is a former active duty military veteran, private security specialist, and police officer. He accepted a new job opportunity out of state, so was looking to sell the “box” as it’s known in the CrossFit world.

With more than 80 members, CrossFit Charleston is located at 450 Deanna Lane off Clements Ferry Road in Wando. It offers a variety of group class times plus a detailed on-boarding process for those looking to try CrossFit for the first time.

CrossFit is a fitness regimen developed by CEO and founder Greg Glassman over several decades. CrossFit is defined as constantly varied functional movements performed at high intensity. All CrossFit workouts are based on functional movements, and these movements reflect the best aspects of gymnastics, weightlifting, running, rowing and more. All the WODs (workout of the day) are easily scaled to accommodate all fitness levels or physical limitations.

Clint Fisher is a cybersecurity contractor at Cambridge International Systems, supporting the U.S. Department of Defense. He became interested in CrossFit in 2010, earning his Level 1 certificate for coaching as well as certifications in CrossFit Mobility and CrossFit Endurance.

“I grew up on a small farm in Arkansas, working long hours outside. When I left for college and then later joined the Air Force, I never found anything fitness related that I really enjoyed or felt was really making me fit,” Clint Fisher said. “When I found CrossFit, it was like a homecoming, and it not only became my workout, but my lifestyle. If you want lifelong fitness and longevity, you can’t go wrong with CrossFit.”

Holly Fisher is the CEO of Fisher Creative, a marketing and public relations firm in Mount Pleasant. She attended her first CrossFit class in 2010 and was immediately hooked.

“I was never an athletic person who grew up playing sports, but when I found CrossFit, I became an athlete,” Holly Fisher said. “I love how CrossFit makes you better physically and mentally. And that’s largely thanks to the community of athletes at our local box. I’m excited to invite even more people into CrossFit Charleston where we can help them become the very best version of themselves.”
