With two more East Coast locations planned for Charlotte and Greenville, The Matador owner and North Carolina native Zak Melang is thrilled to be opening the restaurant’s doors in Charleston.

SIGNATURE STYLE & FLAVORS

Matador Charleston blends rustic hacienda-inspired style with modern touches featuring décor such as a custom-built metal fireplace, a vibrant stained-glass window featuring The Matador logo and old-world Mexican-style antiques curated by Melang, who designs and creates much of the décor by hand. Matador Charleston’s dining room, seating over 120 guests inside, complements the upstairs Mezcaleria, a dedicated mezcal bar built from reclaimed wood, along with a spacious outdoor patio. In addition to the Mezcaleria and outdoor patio, a combined 4,500 sq. ft. of upstairs event space is inclusive of two private rooms – coined the Reposado and Añejo Room – and offers a place for those of all ages to gather for private parties and banquets.  

Beloved for its menu of inventive, scratch-made dishes, Matador’s fresh Mexican cuisine is paired with a world-class tequila selection. At the adult-friendly restaurant, which welcomes guests over 21, Matador spotlights the art of agave through the largest selection of tequila and agave spirits in the Carolinas. For those who like it neat, guests can sip their favorites or try something new during Top Shelf Tuesday, which offers half-off any tequila over $16. Cocktail enthusiasts can indulge in a wide variety of margaritas, ranging from the classics to unique flavors like Blackberry-Habanero, Cucumber-Jalapeño, Tamarind-Ginger and Blood Orange.

From 4 to 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. to close, come hungry for a daily happy hour featuring food specials such as crowd-favorite Grande Nachos, Grilled Stuffed Jalapeños and Street Tacos. Appetizer highlights include Queso Con Chorizo with melted three-cheese house blend, creamy habanero sauce, pico de gallo, cilantro and queso fresco; and Ahi Tuna Tostadas with avocado, agave ponzu sauce, chipotle mayo, green onion and finishing salt. Governor Henry McMaster declared the month of May to be the first South Carolina Hurricane Preparedness Month in the state’s history. Hurricane season begins June 1, making May a crucial time for preparations within the state.

The theme for the state’s first Hurricane Prep Month is “Take the time while you have the time.” The month allows you adequate time to evaluate your current preparedness situation and see what preparations you can make now to ensure you are ready at the start of Hurricane Season.

Hurricanes often have impacts throughout the state of South Carolina and with employees in every county in the state, Clemson University can often be impacted as well. While those living and working in Hurricane Evacuation Zones are at the greatest risk, heavy rain, strong winds and possible tornados can impact those well inland. Regardless of where you live, begin your hurricane preparations now and follow these steps to keep you and your family safe.

Prepare Your Home

  • Conduct a safety check to ensure your home can withstand the effects of a hurricane.
  • Get your roof inspected, de-clutter drains and gutters, bring in outside furniture and consider hurricane shutters.
  • Confirm your insurance policies cover the types of damages hurricanes can cause.
  • Make a list and take photos of your belongings as records.

Make a Plan

  • Learn your nearest evacuation route, practice with your household and pets and identify where you will stay. Rely on the blue hurricane evacuation signs, not GPS.
  • Build a kit with enough supplies for your household for several days, including medication, disinfectant supplies and pet supplies.
  • Keep your cell phone charged when a hurricane is in the forecast and purchase backup charging devices to power electronics.
  • Have several ways to receive alerts and stay tuned to local radio and TV stations for emergency information.

PTSD is a critical challenge faced by South Carolinians and Americas every day. We know that many feel they face it alone, but there are resources and communities to help. We have compiled a list of excellent resources to help cope and alleviate some of the fears, anxiety, depression and loneliness.

Here are some options you can consider:

  1. Local Mental Health Clinics and Centers: Charleston likely has mental health clinics and centers that specialize in trauma-related disorders, including PTSD. You can search online or contact your local health department for a list of such facilities in the area. Some well-known clinics in the Charleston area include the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) Health, Roper St. Francis Healthcare, and the Charleston Dorchester Mental Health Center.
  2. Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Centers: If you are a military veteran, the Ralph H. Del Webb Charleston at Nexton is growing with 420 additional new homes planned and a lineup of added amenities on tap for active adults, including a bar and grill with poolside service, more pickleball courts and a grand multi-use gymnasium for concerts, large resident events and indoor sporting activities.

One of PulteGroup’s top selling communities, Del Webb Charleston at Nexton will grow from its approximately 350 acres to more than 515 acres to accommodate the new amenities and households, which are expected to reach about 1,433 homes upon buildout.

Located 25 miles northwest of downtown Charleston, residents of the 55+ gated community should begin seeing the expansion coming out of the ground in late 2024 with completion expected the following year.
