By Mark A Leon

Charleston, South Carolina is nationally and in some circles internationally renowned for its culinary scene, but at the heart of its food culture are family-owned restaurants where the spirit of kinship shapes every meal. Here are four standout establishments where “family first” is more than a motto-it’s a way of life.

Magnolias – 186 E. Bay Street, Charleston, SC

A cornerstone of Charleston’s dining landscape since 1990, Magnolias is owned by the Parsell family, who restored a historic site to create a gathering place for locals and visitors alike. Led by Culinary Arts Director Donald Drake, the restaurant blends traditional Lowcountry cuisine with modern flair, offering dishes like Fried Green Tomatoes and Shellfish over Grits. The family’s commitment to excellence and hospitality has made Magnolias a beloved institution for over 30 years, serving as a testament to the power of family vision and teamwork.

Kim Lor describes the joy of seeing her family every day while serving heartfelt dishes like Pad Thai and Tom Yum, all prepared with genuine care and dedication to their community.
