Charleston County’s Main Library at 68 Calhoun Street will temporarily close Aug. 1 as work begins on an extensive renovation designed to modernize the downtown landmark and better serve the community. The renovation is expected to take about 18 months and marks the final phase of the library system’s voter-approved 2014 capital improvement program.
The project will create more accessible, family-friendly spaces by bringing children’s and teen services together on the same floor, refreshing public areas, upgrading technology, and expanding flexible programming spaces for community events and learning.
While the Main Library is closed, Charleston County Public Library will continue serving downtown patrons from a temporary location at 1142 Morrison Drive, where visitors will still be able to check out books, pick up holds, use public computers, access Wi-Fi, and participate in select library programs. The South Carolina Room has also been temporarily relocated as part of the renovation preparations.
Library officials say the renovation represents the final investment in a countywide modernization effort that has transformed library facilities across Charleston County over the past decade, ensuring the Main Library remains a vibrant community resource for years to come.
