One of downtown Charleston’s most recognizable neighborhood bars is preparing to pour its last drink. Silver Dollar, a longtime King Street fixture, announced it will close its doors on Sunday, Aug. 23, ending a 26-year run in the heart of the city.
Since opening in 1999, the beloved watering hole has earned a loyal following among locals, hospitality workers, musicians, and visitors looking for an unpretentious place to gather. Known for its laid-back atmosphere and strong sense of community, Silver Dollar became a staple of Charleston’s nightlife during a period of dramatic change and growth on the peninsula.
The closure marks the end of an era for many Charlestonians who have celebrated milestones, forged friendships, and created lasting memories within its walls. As news of the closing spreads, patrons have taken to social media to share stories and express gratitude for a bar that remained a constant amid a rapidly evolving King Street corridor.
Silver Dollar’s final day of operation is scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 23, giving longtime customers one last opportunity to raise a glass to a Charleston institution.
