‘Bob’s Burgers’ Artist Jay Howell Brings Flash Art Exhibition to Charleston – Free Event

by Mark A. Leon

CHARLESTON, S.C. — An evening of unconventional art, live music and animation-inspired creativity is coming to Charleston as artist Jay Howell brings his distinctive style to Hed Hi Studio for a one-night flash exhibition.

The event, scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 17, from 6 to 10 p.m., will feature large-scale drawings, live portrait illustrations, a musical performance by Athens, Georgia-based indie rock band Monsoon, and an atmosphere inspired by punk rock, skateboarding and independent art culture.

Howell is widely recognized for his work on the animated television series Bob’s Burgers, where his quirky character designs and expressive illustrations helped shape the show’s distinctive visual identity. His artistic style draws from underground comics, punk aesthetics and skateboarding culture, combining unconventional characters with bold, expressive line work.

The Charleston exhibition will showcase approximately 15 to 20 large-scale drawings, giving visitors an opportunity to experience Howell’s artwork outside the television screen. The collection reflects the artist’s recognizable approach to illustration, balancing humor, irreverence and a raw, hand-drawn aesthetic.

One of the evening’s highlights will be the opportunity for attendees to have their portraits drawn live by Howell. Using his signature animation-inspired style, the artist will create personalized illustrations that offer visitors a chance to take home a unique piece connected to the experience.

Live music will add another dimension to the event. Monsoon, an indie rock band from Athens, Georgia, is scheduled to perform during the exhibition. The evening will also feature hot dogs and custom art prints available for purchase, reinforcing the casual, community-oriented spirit of the gathering.

The exhibition is connected to the Rough House Pictures and Hed Hi Studio partnership, which has embraced temporary art installations and unconventional creative programming. Rather than following the traditional gallery model, these events bring visual artists, musicians and audiences together for brief, energetic experiences that encourage direct engagement with the work.

Hed Hi Studio, located on King Street in Charleston, has become a gathering place for independent art and creative expression. The venue’s programming reflects the broader evolution of Charleston’s cultural landscape, where independent spaces are creating opportunities for artists to experiment, collaborate and connect with audiences beyond conventional exhibition settings.

The flash-show format is central to the experience. With the exhibition scheduled for a single evening, visitors will have a limited window to view the drawings, meet other art enthusiasts, enjoy live music and potentially commission a personalized portrait.

For fans of Bob’s Burgers, Howell’s appearance offers a rare opportunity to engage with the creative mind behind some of the series’ memorable visual elements. For Charleston’s arts community, the event represents another example of the city’s growing intersection of illustration, music and alternative culture.

The combination of large-scale artwork, live portrait drawing and indie rock promises an evening that is less formal gallery opening and more creative gathering — one that celebrates the spontaneity and individuality of independent art.
