A Taste of Old Charleston: Anson Restaurant Delivers Fine Dining With Heart

By Mark A. Leon

It is a beautifully cool October evening in Charleston. Along Anson Street, several magnificent stallions trot gracefully from the Old South Carriage Company, making their way back to the pastures to graze and rest for the night. My date has arrived, and an elegant dinner at Anson Restaurant awaits.

Stepping inside, we are greeted with warm smiles, the soft glow of the dining room and a classic black-and-white film playing behind the bar. Historic photographs and paintings adorn the walls, while equestrian portraits add character and a sense of tradition. Our booth is perfectly positioned, offering a window view and a sweeping look across the restaurant’s open dining space.

This is Anson Restaurant: fine dining that feels approachable, where Southern hospitality is more than a promise and the experience extends well beyond the plate.

Anson also has a story that feels uniquely Charleston. The restaurant’s history includes a Christmas Eve fire that forced it to close for more than two years before reopening in 2015. Its equestrian décor reflects the Balish family’s longstanding love of horses, with several portraits painted by the sister of co-owner Donna Balish Moeckel.

Across its two floors, Anson brings together historic character, culinary craftsmanship and a touch of nostalgia. The result is a dining experience that feels rooted in Charleston’s past while remaining firmly part of its evolving culinary scene.

The Art of Hospitality

Let’s begin with the service, because it is often what separates a good dinner from a memorable evening.

After two hours at a restaurant, how much do you typically know about your server? At Anson, we learned that Darnell had been part of the team for 11 years, had been married for 19 years, had two wonderful children and had proposed to the soundtrack of Whitney Houston’s “The Greatest Love of All.”

And through it all, he never seemed to lose his smile.

That personal connection was not an isolated moment. It reflected a culture of hospitality that made us feel less like customers and more like welcomed guests. Our server became a memorable part of the evening, demonstrating how genuine conversation and attentive service can elevate an entire dining experience.

Comfort is another part of the equation. Charleston has no shortage of popular restaurants where the noise level can make conversation feel like a competition. At Anson, the open layout and historic architectural character create an inviting atmosphere where guests can hear one another. The room feels lively without overwhelming the table, making it an ideal setting for a date night, celebration or relaxed evening with friends.

A Menu Rooted in the Lowcountry, With Room to Explore

Of course, we came for the food. Would Anson leave that lasting impression Charleston diners seek? Absolutely—and in several instances, it went a step further.

Anson has established itself as a longstanding destination for Charleston fine dining, combining traditional American favorites with contemporary culinary techniques and the creative touch of Chef Shaun. The menu offers something for a range of preferences, from classic steakhouse selections to seafood and inventive preparations that reward a little culinary curiosity.

Here are several dishes worth considering on your next visit.

Roasted Oysters: A strong way to begin the evening, these oysters arrive topped with garlic butter, Parmigiano-Reggiano and breadcrumbs. The combination delivers a rich, savory bite that pairs beautifully with a glass of wine.

Yellowfin Tuna Crudo: For diners looking to explore something a little different, this preparation combines yellowfin tuna with hibiscus and beet aguachile, cucumber, pickled pineapple and coconut crema. The interplay of sweet, tangy and coastal flavors makes for a refreshing start.

Goat Cheese Gnocchi: This dish brings together handmade gnocchi, Wagyu short rib ragout and roasted bell pepper. Enjoy the delicate gnocchi on its own before pairing it with the rich, savory short rib. Each combination offers a satisfying contrast of texture and flavor.

Steakhouse Favorites: Steak lovers have plenty to consider, including a center-cut filet mignon, bone-in New York strip and 45-day dry-aged bone-in ribeye. Prepared to order, these selections deliver the kind of hearty, satisfying experience expected from a quality steakhouse.

Crispy Brussels Sprouts: Whether ordered as a starter or alongside an entrée, these sprouts deserve a place at the table. Fish sauce caramel, chilies, scallions and cashews create a sweet-savory combination with a little heat at the finish.

A Special Request: Anson’s Pesto Gnocchi: Not listed on the menu, this distinctive preparation may be available by request. The pesto features cilantro, parsley, toasted pumpkin seeds, olive oil and coconut milk in place of dairy. Its origins trace back to Chef Shaun’s early career in Chicago, when a fellow chef challenged him to create a dish using carrot tops. The recipe has evolved over the years but remains one of his personal favorites. Ask your server whether it is available during your visit.

A Charleston Classic That Continues to Deliver

Fine dining comes with certain expectations: exceptional food, knowledgeable and attentive service, a thoughtfully curated bar and wine list, a comfortable atmosphere and a meal that stays with you long after the final course.

Anson Restaurant checks those boxes without relying on flash or spectacle. It does not need to reinvent itself with every passing trend or dominate social media to make an impression. Instead, it continues to build on what has made it a fixture of Charleston’s dining scene: hospitality, consistency, culinary ambition and a setting steeped in local character.

In a city where the restaurant landscape continues to evolve, there is something refreshing about a place that understands the value of tradition while still finding room for creativity.

On this October evening, the experience began with horses returning to their pastures and ended with a memorable meal shared across a comfortable booth. Between the warm welcome, engaging service and thoughtful menu, Anson delivered something that goes beyond fine dining.

It delivered a taste of old Charleston—with the warmth, character and culinary quality that keep people coming back.
