A life remembered through art, friendship, creativity and the things that made her uniquely herself will take center stage this December when friends and family gather in North Charleston for Zöë Fest — A Celebration of the Life of Zoe Hyman.

The event is planned for Sunday, December 13, 2026, from 5–10 p.m. at Building 64 in North Charleston, and organizers are inviting the community to come together to celebrate Zoe and the lasting impression she made on the people around her. 

From the photographs shared by her family, Zoe’s creativity was evident from an early age. She is pictured as a child proudly displaying her artwork, and later as a young woman with her distinctive blue hair and artistic spirit.

The upcoming celebration will bring many of those passions together.

According to the event organizers, the evening will feature an art exhibition showcasing Zoe’s animal portraits and tattoo flash, along with paintings of Zoe created by her father, Phillip Hyman, over the years. Other artists and friends are also being invited to create and submit artwork inspired by her life. 

The celebration will extend well beyond a traditional art show.

Plans include The Stuffie Monstrz Museum, a drag show featuring friends from the LGBTQI community, food from Crazy Dutchman Catering, a booth with friends from Abracadabra Tattoo Shop, art stations and more. A special section will also feature Zoe’s clothing, shoes and bags, allowing friends and loved ones to take home something that belonged to her as a personal remembrance. 

Organizers describe the event as a developing celebration and are encouraging friends and members of the community to contribute ideas for additional creative stations and activities.

There are also opportunities for people to become part of the event behind the scenes. A recent announcement called for volunteers on Saturday, December 12, and Sunday, December 13, while encouraging artists to create work inspired by Zoe’s life.

At its heart, Zöë Fest is about turning remembrance into something tangible — art, laughter, friendship, creativity and community.

For those who knew Zoe, it will be an opportunity to gather and share memories. For those discovering her story through her art and the people who loved her, it will be a chance to see the person behind the photographs: a young artist whose creativity continues to inspire those around her.

For generations of Charleston locals, Citadel cadets, service-industry workers and downtown regulars, Big John’s Tavern has been more than just a bar. It has been one of those places woven into the fabric of Charleston nightlife—a place where strangers could walk in, grab a drink and, as the old slogan promised, “come as a stranger and leave as a friend.”

Now, the future of the longtime East Bay Street establishment is uncertain amid financial and legal troubles surrounding its ownership group.

Big John’s Tavern, located at 251 East Bay Street, traces its history to 1955, when Charleston native and former New York Giants linebacker John “Big John” Canady opened the tavern. The bar became particularly associated with Citadel cadets and downtown workers and developed a reputation as a quintessential Charleston dive bar. 

The original Big John’s closed following a devastating fire in 2015, ending an era at the historic location. Six years later, three Citadel graduates—Christopher Houston, Scotty Sheriff and Darren Bradley—brought the name back to its original home, reopening the tavern in 2021. 

The revival attempted to preserve the spirit of the old Big John’s while giving the property a more contemporary feel. Original elements and salvaged memorabilia were incorporated into the renovation, while the menu and cocktail program were upgraded. A speakeasy-style space, Scotty Doesn’t Know, was also added. 

But the comeback has encountered significant challenges.

A recent report from the Charleston Regional Business Chronicle, based on reporting by The Post and Courier, details multiple lawsuits involving the owners and related businesses, with allegations involving more than $600,000 in unpaid obligations. The disputes include claims from a former business partner, disagreements involving brewery equipment and other unpaid invoices. The parties have disputed various allegations, and the cases remain pending in Charleston County. 

The financial disputes have also coincided with reduced hours and intermittent closures at Big John’s. Recent reporting found the tavern closed during some posted operating hours and displaying temporary reduced hours. 

At the same time, the tavern’s official website continues to promote Big John’s, private parties, food and drinks, and lists the East Bay Street location. 

That distinction is important: current reporting establishes financial and operational problems, but I could not verify a formal announcement that Big John’s Tavern has permanently closed.

For Charleston, however, even the possibility of losing Big John’s carries a certain weight.

The tavern represents an older version of downtown—a place that existed before much of East Bay became synonymous with high-end restaurants, cocktail bars and destination dining. Its history is tied to the people who worked downtown, the students who passed through The Citadel and the locals who wanted an unpretentious place to grab a beer.

Big John’s has already survived a fire, a lengthy absence and a resurrection. Whether it will survive its latest chapter remains to be seen.

For now, the story of Big John’s Tavern is not necessarily one of a final closing, but of a historic Charleston gathering place facing a difficult and uncertain moment.

The Lowcountry Fish & Grits Music Festival will return to Hilton Head Island on Saturday, October 3, 2026, bringing together music, food, art and community for a celebration rooted in the rich traditions of the Gullah Geechee culture.

The family-friendly, one-day festival will take place from 12 to 6 p.m. at Lowcountry Celebration Park, 94 Pope Avenue, Hilton Head Island. 

A Celebration of Gullah Geechee Culture

At its heart, Fish & Grits is about more than a day of entertainment. The festival’s mission is to raise awareness of the unique Gullah Geechee culture, its evolution and its connections to the African diaspora through music, food, visual and performing arts, and community engagement. 

The festival draws inspiration from the Lowcountry’s deep African American cultural history. Shrimp and grits, for example, has roots as a staple of Gullah Geechee kitchens, while musical traditions that helped shape blues, jazz and other American genres developed within African American communities along the coastal Southeast. 

Music Across Multiple Genres

Music will be a central part of the afternoon, with performances representing the broad musical traditions of the Lowcountry and African diaspora.

The festival’s performers have included artists and groups such as Gwen Yvette, Frankie Quiñones, Vascola Stoney, Louise Cohen, Votte Hall, Angela Bonaparte and Company, Latrese Bush, the McIntosh County Shouters and La Bodega. 

The musical program encompasses R&B, jazz, funk, folk and spoken word, creating a diverse soundtrack for the festival’s cultural celebration. 

Food, Art & Local Vendors

Food is naturally another major component of Fish & Grits. Festivalgoers can expect food offerings inspired by Lowcountry and Gullah Geechee traditions, along with vendors showcasing art, clothing, handmade goods and other locally inspired products.

The festival describes its marketplace as an opportunity to experience the culture through art, food, clothing and more, making the event as much a cultural marketplace as a music festival. 

Previous editions have also featured food trucks, craft vendors and an oyster roast, reflecting the festival’s emphasis on the culinary traditions of the Lowcountry. 

A Day on Hilton Head Island

Set at Lowcountry Celebration Park, the festival offers an opportunity to spend an autumn Saturday experiencing live music, regional food and cultural traditions in one of the Lowcountry’s most recognizable communities.

Organizers envision Fish & Grits as a gathering for families and friends while creating greater awareness of Gullah Geechee history and its continuing influence on Lowcountry culture.

The Pillars Pavilion will add six flexible classrooms and create new spaces for experiential learning, the arts, performances, presentations and community connection.

September 15, 2026 – JOHNS ISLAND, S.C. Charleston Collegiate School (CCS) has launched The Pillars Pavilion Campaign, a $10 million capital campaign to build a new, approximately 12,000-square-foot facility at the heart of its Johns Island campus.

The Pillars Pavilion will add six flexible classrooms and provide dedicated space for learning, collaboration, creativity, and community gatherings. The facility will also include a community meeting space, performing arts venue and presentation hall, creating new opportunities for students to share their work and for the school to bring its community together. 

The project represents a significant investment in the future of education on Johns Island and throughout the greater Charleston area. As the Lowcountry continues to grow and the way students learn continues to evolve, CCS is expanding its campus to support the hands-on, collaborative and real-world learning that has defined the school for more than 50 years.

The Pavilion will serve students from PS3 through Grade 12 and amplify CCS’s four educational pillars: Project-Based Learning, Outdoor Education, Entrepreneurship, and Performing and Visual Arts.

“The Pillars Pavilion is an investment in our students and in the future of our community,” said Andy Gyves, Head of School at Charleston Collegiate School. “Our students are doing extraordinary things every day. They are designing, creating, performing, solving problems, collaborating, and applying what they learn to the real world. Our campus needs to reflect that same energy and possibility. The project will also help CCS grow alongside the Johns Island and greater Charleston communities. With a goal of becoming a school of approximately 530 students in the coming years, the Pavilion will provide the space and flexibility needed to welcome and serve more students while maintaining the close-knit, relationship-based environment that is central to the CCS experience.

Located at the heart of the campus, the Pavilion will create opportunities for students and faculty to collaborate across grade levels and disciplines while providing new spaces for creativity, exploration, performance, and connection.

The Pavilion was designed by LS3P, an architecture and design firm with a long history of designing educational and community spaces throughout the Southeast. Hill Construction, a Charleston-based construction company, will lead construction of the project.

The campaign will bring together CCS families, alumni, grandparents, friends, and community partners in support of a shared vision for the school’s future. Philanthropic support will help expand opportunities for students, strengthen community connections, and create an environment where exceptional teaching and transformative learning can thrive.

Ultimately, The Pillars Pavilion Campaign is an investment in the students who will learn, create, lead, and make an impact in the Charleston community and beyond for generations to come.

Dock Discovery

Join one of our naturalists at the fishing dock at James Island County Park. We’ll explore the marsh edges, the organisms that live underwater on the dock itself, and even microscopic plankton that drift their way down the creek. A net especially designed to trap tiny planktonic organisms will be used and microscopes will be set up at an indoor location to allow us to view this seldom seen world. What to expect: Accessible parking, accessible restrooms, and accessible water fountains are available at this park. A portion of this program will take place in the salt marsh on a dock. Periods of walking and observing nature are part of this program. The program’s walking pace will be slow to moderate, and the trails are paved surfaces. Tables for sitting will be available where the second half of program takes place.

Dig deep into the history of Indigenous peoples of the Lowcountry through archaeological evidence and landscape interpretation. Join Cultural History Interpretation Coordinator, Georgette Rivera, to explore the material culture left behind by Indigenous communities thousands of years ago. Participants will examine artifacts such as pottery, learn how settlement patterns are identified through archaeology, and consider how Indigenous peoples shaped and managed coastal landscapes long before written records. Accessible parking, restrooms, water fountains, and picnic tables are available at Caw Caw Interpretive Center. Trails are of paved and unpaved surfaces and benches are available along the trails. Portions of this activity will take place in a climate-controlled classroom.

We’ll discuss shark adaptations and biology while learning the secrets to searching for shark teeth. What to expect: Accessible parking, accessible restrooms, and accessible water fountains are available near the Dunes House where the program begins and ends. An accessible route to a natural sand beach is present and beach wheelchairs are available for checkout on a first come, first served basis. This program takes place on a sandy beach and requires periods of slow walking, standing, and gazing upwards or downwards to observe wildlife.

Lighthouse Inlet Heritage Preserve

This walk focuses on the incredibly diverse northeast end of Folly Island. Once the home of a Coast Guard station, this Heritage Preserve protects maritime forest, beach, dune, and marsh habitats for wildlife. This site is a leader in number of bird species seen in South Carolina. Across the three events, attendees will learn about the Stono Rebellion through public presentations, interacting with archaeological artifacts, and experiencing the landscape through a walking tour of Caw Caw and a driving tour of the major sites of the rebellion. In this kick-off event, we begin in the Caw Caw classroom with a presentation of the historical events of Stono Rebellion by Joshua Parks and Eric Grant. Jon Marcoux will then discuss how archaeology can help us learn about the events and lives of the people who were involved in the rebellion, inviting attendees to explore archaeological artifacts as a tangible link to the past. We will then visit the nearby Stono Rebellion National Historic Landmark site and discuss the impacts of modern development on the surrounding historic landscape. Hone your listening skills too, as an emphasis will be placed on birding by ear through several distinct habitat types ranging from blackwater swamp to salt marsh. A net especially designed to trap tiny planktonic organisms will be used and microscopes will be set up at an indoor location to allow us to view this seldom seen world. What to expect: Accessible parking, accessible restrooms, and accessible water fountains are available at this park. A portion of this program will take place in the salt marsh on a dock. Periods of walking and observing nature are part of this program. The program’s walking pace will be slow to moderate, and the trails are paved surfaces. Construction workers are earning more than the typical U.S. worker, but how far those paychecks go varies dramatically depending on where they live and work.

A new analysis from Construction Coverage compares construction worker wages with regional cost-of-living differences to identify the U.S. cities and states where construction workers have the greatest purchasing power. Researchers analyzed the latest wage data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics alongside regional price data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis, ranking more than 350 metropolitan areas and all 50 states by cost-of-living-adjusted pay.

In the Charleston metro specifically, construction workers earn a median $51,290 per year. But factoring in its +1.0% cost of living, Charleston metro construction workers earn the equivalent of $50,801 annually. For context, the median annual wage for all workers in the Charleston metro is $49,150.

Charleston, SC – Production has overtaken Information Technology as the fastest-growing occupation category in the Charleston metro region, according to the Charleston Metro Region Talent Demand Study 2026, produced by the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce and Charleston Regional Development Alliance.

Production jobs are projected to grow 16.7% between 2025 and 2030, adding approximately 3,945 net new jobs. Architecture and engineering follows with projected growth of 14.3%, while information technology is expected to grow 12.6%. The shift reflects continued investment in advanced manufacturing as automation and AI-enabled processes become more integrated into how work is done across the region.

Overall, the Charleston metro is projected to add approximately 33,200 net new jobs by 2030. The study looks beyond the total number of jobs being created to examine where demand is growing, how occupations are changing and whether the region’s workforce pipeline is producing people with the skills, certifications and degrees employers will need.

“The Charleston region is positioned for continued job growth and that growth will not look the same across every occupation. Understanding where demand is accelerating and where potential workforce gaps exist gives us an opportunity to respond earlier and more strategically,” said Celeste Granger, Senior Vice President of Workforce and Leadership at the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce. 

“Charleston’s workforce needs are changing alongside its economy. The rise of production, continued demand for engineering and technology talent, and growing importance of both technical and soft skills demonstrate that preparing for future growth requires looking ahead, not simply responding to today’s needs,” said Jacki Renegar, Senior Director of Research and Business Intelligence at the Charleston Regional Development Alliance. “This data helps our region make more informed decisions about where to focus talent development efforts and investment.” 

The findings also point to potential gaps between employer demand and the region’s education and training pipeline. Degree-dependent fields projected to face some of the largest shortfalls include education instruction and library, architecture and engineering and management. Potential gaps also appear in occupations requiring specialized certifications, including certified nursing assistants, licensed practical nurses and workers requiring transportation worker identification credentials.

“Employers and educators across our region have made important progress in aligning curriculum, training and career-connected learning with changing workforce needs,” Granger said. “Continuing that collaboration will be essential to preparing students and workers for the opportunities ahead and helping businesses access the talent they need to grow.”

The Talent Demand Study examines projected job opportunities and potential gaps in skills, certifications and degrees across Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties. The findings are intended to help business, education and workforce leaders better understand where talent supply aligns with employer demand and where additional attention may be needed to support career pathways, training and future investment.

A new permanent place of remembrance and reflection is set to open in Charleston this fall.

The Emanuel Nine Memorial will officially open to the public on November 14, 2026, honoring the nine parishioners who were killed at Mother Emanuel AME Church on June 17, 2015, as well as the five survivors and all those whose lives were forever changed by the tragedy.

Designed by architect Michael Arad, who also designed the National September 11 Memorial in New York City, the memorial is envisioned as a space for remembrance, learning and reflection.

The memorial seeks not only to preserve the stories of those lost, but also to encourage visitors to consider how understanding, compassion and love can shape the future.

“This Memorial gives people a place to remember them, learn their stories and reflect on how each of us can help build a future rooted in understanding, compassion and love,” said Executive Director Deona Smith.

The Emanuel Nine Memorial will be a permanent part of Charleston’s landscape and a place where residents and visitors can pause, remember and reflect on one of the most consequential moments in the city’s modern history.

Admission will be free.

The public opening on November 14 offers Charleston and visitors from around the world an opportunity to honor the Emanuel Nine and carry their stories forward.
