Charleston County is known for its beautiful beaches, parks, and outdoor attractions, but summer in the Lowcountry often brings temperatures in the 90s accompanied by intense humidity. On those days when the playground is simply too hot or an afternoon thunderstorm rolls through, families don’t have to stay home. Across Charleston County, there are several indoor destinations where children can stay active, explore, learn, and have fun in air-conditioned comfort.
One of the area’s most popular family attractions is the Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry, located at 25 Ann Street, Charleston, SC 29403. Designed for infants through elementary-aged children, the museum encourages hands-on exploration through imaginative exhibits including a pirate ship, medieval castle, art studio, construction zone, and STEM-focused activities. The museum is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. More information is available at www.explorecml.org.
Just a few minutes away on the Charleston Harbor, the South Carolina Aquarium offers families an opportunity to discover thousands of aquatic animals while escaping the summer heat. Located at 100 Aquarium Wharf, Charleston, SC 29401, the aquarium features everything from sharks and stingrays to sea turtles, river otters, and interactive exhibits highlighting South Carolina’s diverse ecosystems. The popular Sea Turtle Care Center gives visitors an up-close look at the rehabilitation of injured sea turtles. The aquarium is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visit www.scaquarium.org for admission information and special programs.
Families with energetic children looking to burn off some steam will find plenty to do at Urban Air Adventure Park in North Charleston. Located at 7800 Rivers Avenue, North Charleston, SC 29406, the indoor entertainment center features trampolines, climbing walls, obstacle courses, dodgeball courts, ropes courses, and adventure attractions suitable for a variety of ages. Hours are Monday through Thursday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., Friday from noon to 9 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 8 p.m. Additional information is available at www.urbanair.com/south-carolina-north-charleston.
For younger children, OutSlide In has quickly become a favorite indoor destination on Charleston’s west side. Located inside Citadel Mall at 2070 Sam Rittenberg Boulevard, Suite 304, Charleston, SC 29407, the colorful indoor playground features slides, climbing structures, sensory play areas, and imaginative spaces designed specifically for toddlers and younger elementary-aged children. The facility is open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Learn more at www.outslidein.com.
Another popular indoor playground is Bizzy Bee Indoor Play Center, located at 7671-A Northwoods Boulevard, North Charleston, SC 29406. With more than 12,000 square feet of indoor play space, Bizzy Bee offers separate areas for toddlers and older children, climbing equipment, slides, obstacle courses, and party rooms, making it an ideal destination for families seeking an active afternoon indoors. Business hours are Monday through Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. More information is available at www.bizzybeeplay.com.

History-loving families can also spend several hours exploring the Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum at 40 Patriots Point Road, Mount Pleasant, SC 29464. While portions of the attraction are outdoors, much of the experience takes place inside the historic USS Yorktown, where visitors can tour aircraft hangars, crew quarters, interactive exhibits, and educational displays chronicling American naval history. Patriots Point is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visit www.patriotspoint.org for ticket information.
Another excellent option combines education with one of Charleston’s greatest resources—its public libraries. The Charleston County Public Library system, with locations throughout the county including the Keith Summey North Charleston Library, the Main Library in downtown Charleston, and branches in Mount Pleasant, James Island, West Ashley, Johns Island, and beyond, offers free children’s story times, STEM activities, crafts, reading programs, and family events throughout the summer. Most branches also feature dedicated children’s spaces where kids can read, play, and participate in interactive programming while staying cool indoors. Hours vary by location, and a full calendar of events can be found at www.ccpl.org.
When the Lowcountry heat reaches its peak, these indoor destinations provide families with welcome relief while keeping children active, engaged, and entertained. Whether it’s exploring marine life, climbing through indoor playgrounds, discovering history aboard an aircraft carrier, or enjoying story time at the local library, Charleston County offers plenty of opportunities to turn even the hottest summer day into a memorable family adventure.
