Charleston’s newest waterfront green space is already becoming one of its most peaceful hidden gems. Fort Pemberton Park, now open at 221 Yates Avenue in the Riverland Terrace neighborhood of James Island, blends Lowcountry beauty with Civil War history in a way few places can.

For over three decades, Brad and Jennifer Moranz, a husband-and-wife creative artistic/ theater team, have been bringing original musical productions to Charleston audiences year-round. Their latest show combines beloved hits from the 1950s, ’60s, and ’70s with an imaginative storyline that begins in an unlikely place: a vintage record store struck by a meteor.

The concept grew out of a shared love for the beautiful music of those eras.

“Basically, the inspiration is the fact that we love this music from the ’50s, ’60s, and ’70s,” Brad explained. “We wanted to create a show that would showcase that music.”

From there, they began searching for a dramatic framework that would allow those songs to come to life on stage. The idea evolved naturally—from vintage music to a vintage record store. Then came the twist that transformed the concept into a theatrical rock and roll thrilling adventure.

“We thought, ‘Imagine if a meteor came from outer space and collided with the record store, and suddenly all the records came to life.’ That’s how it started.”

A Lifetime in Theater

Brad and Jennifer have been creating musicals and musical revues together for 31 years, but their connection to the stage goes back much further.

“Jenny and I have been in theater our whole lives,” he said.

Before settling in Charleston, both worked professionally in New York. Jennifer performed as a Radio City Rockette and appeared in productions including 42nd Street. Her husband performed on Broadway in Singin’ in the Rain and played Seymour in the off-Broadway production of Little Shop of Horrors.

Their paths crossed while touring nationally with Singin’ in the Rain.

“We met in the national tour of Singin’ in the Rain, fell in love, got together, and have been working and creating stuff together ever since.”

Bringing Imagination to Life

For the pair, creating an original production is both exhilarating and challenging. Every show begins as an idea, existing only in their minds before it gradually takes shape through performers, choreography, music, and staging.

“It’s a very interesting process because the process begins with you imagining something and creating it in your imagination,” he said. “Then all of a sudden, you try to find people who can bring that to life.”

Watching those ideas become reality is one of the most rewarding parts of the process, but it also requires adaptation.

“Whenever you take things out of your mind and try to turn them into real life, you have to deal with, well, does it look like the way you imagined, or do you need to adjust? And so it’s a process.”

Jennifer and Brad both share these sentiments.

Passion That Never Fades

Their love of performance started early and has never diminished.

Asked how long he had been playing guitar, he smiled and credited one of the most influential bands in music history.

“I played the guitar since the Beatles came out; that would be since 1964.”

Like many great performers, Brad seems to trace his inspiration back to the moments when he first saw and was inspired by great theater and film, with the ultimate goal of being a part of that world.

“I think Jennifer agrees with me, what inspires us is what has inspired us since we were young. Watching either theater, film, whatever we saw and we went “I wanna do that, that’s so cool.” It never goes away; it’s just something that’s in you.”

,That passion has shaped their careers and continues to fuel every new production.

“We don’t go to work,” he said. “We go have fun. We work, but it’s fun.”

A Charleston Holiday Tradition

While audiences are enjoying their newest musical adventures, the team is already focused on another beloved production. Their annual Christmas show, a Charleston tradition for 31 years. It returns to the Charleston Music Hall this December.

This production attracts approximately 10,000 audience members year-round and runs for several weeks during the holiday season, something many Charleston residents cherish seeing each year.

“We have a great time,” he said. “We work on that pretty much year-round.”

A Message of Hope

Although their productions are packed with music, humor, and entertainment, there is a deeper theme that runs through nearly all of their work.

Asked whether this latest show carries a particular message, he offered a simple answer.

“Typically, our message is always one of hope.”

No matter the circumstances facing the characters onstage, that belief remains central to their storytelling.

“Hope is everything,” he said.

And perhaps that explains why their productions still continuesto resonate with audiences after more than three decades—combining creativity, nostalgia, and joy.  With the reminder that even in the most challenging moments, there is always reason to believe in something better.

$22.75 million investment will create over 151 new jobs

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Fortified Solar, a U.S. solar manufacturer of custom steel roofing systems with building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) technology, today announced it is expanding its operations in Greenville County. The company’s $22.75 million investment will create over 151 new jobs.

Founded in 2020 by Justin Draplin of Travelers Rest, Fortified Solar manufactures steel solar roofing systems for commercial and residential roofing projects, as well as solar carports, canopies and storage solutions. The company has an existing manufacturing facility in the Upstate, located in Taylors.


Fortified Solar’s new operation, located at 10 A. D. Asbury Road in Greenville, will expand the company’s manufacturing, production and operational capabilities, supporting its ongoing growth.

The company’s existing and new facilities are operational, with new manufacturing lines expected to reach full production by October 2026. Individuals interested in learning more about Fortified Solar should visit FortifiedSolar.com.

The Coordinating Council for Economic Development approved job development credits related to the project. The council also awarded a $150,000 Set-Aside grant to Greenville County to assist with the costs of building improvements.

CHARLESTON, S.C. — Charleston Habitat for Humanity is proud to welcome Retired U.S. Marine Corps Second Lieutenant Tiffany as the newest partner family in its Veterans Build program, helping a local veteran achieve the dream of affordable homeownership.

After nearly 11 years of honorable service as a U.S. Marine Corps Logistics Officer, Tiffany continues her commitment to serving others through her work at the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center. Now, with the support of Charleston Habitat for Humanity, volunteers, donors, and community partners, she is beginning a new chapter—building a safe, stable place to call home.

Raised in Brooklyn, New York, by her grandmother after being born to a teenage mother, Tiffany credits her grandmother’s love and guidance for shaping her resilience, optimism, and desire to serve others. Like many working families in the Lowcountry, she found homeownership increasingly out of reach as Charleston’s housing costs continued to rise.

“Charleston Habitat for Humanity is made up of people with golden hearts who immediately embraced me into their supportive family,” said Tiffany. “I found more than an affordable home—I found a community.”

For Tiffany, homeownership represents more than owning a house. It means having a permanent place where her family can gather, traditions can grow, and future generations can build lasting memories.

One of the most significant components of Charleston County’s proposed 2026 Transportation Sales Tax referendum isn’t a road or a bridge—it’s the land that may never be developed.

Under the proposal, approximately $690 million, or 16% of the estimated $4.25 billion the half-cent sales tax is expected to generate over 25 years, would be dedicated to the Charleston County Greenbelt Program. The investment would represent the largest single funding commitment to land conservation in the county’s history and reflects a long-standing effort to balance rapid growth with preservation of the Lowcountry’s natural character.

Since its creation in 2004, the Greenbelt Program has protected thousands of acres of farmland, maritime forests, wetlands, wildlife habitat, historic landscapes, and public recreation areas throughout Charleston County. Rather than purchasing parks outright in every case, the program often acquires conservation easements, allowing property owners to retain ownership while permanently restricting future development.

County officials say preserving strategically located land does more than protect scenic views. Conserved properties help reduce stormwater runoff, improve water quality, protect wildlife corridors, preserve agricultural operations, and maintain the natural landscapes that define the Lowcountry. Protected wetlands and floodplains also serve as natural buffers during heavy rainfall and hurricanes, helping absorb floodwaters that might otherwise overwhelm developed areas.

Supporters also point to economic benefits. Charleston’s natural beauty is one of its greatest assets, attracting visitors from around the world while helping retain residents and businesses seeking a high quality of life. Parks, trails, waterways, and open spaces contribute to tourism, outdoor recreation, and property values while offering opportunities for hiking, kayaking, birdwatching, fishing, and environmental education.

The Greenbelt Program has helped conserve land across every corner of Charleston County, from Johns Island and Wadmalaw Island to Awendaw, Hollywood, Ravenel, James Island, Mount Pleasant, and West Ashley. Many of these properties remain working farms or privately owned forests, preserving both the county’s rural heritage and its agricultural economy.

As development continues to accelerate across the region, conservation advocates argue that protecting environmentally sensitive land today is less expensive than attempting to restore damaged ecosystems later. Once forests, wetlands, and farms are converted into subdivisions or commercial developments, those landscapes are rarely recovered.

Not everyone agrees with dedicating such a significant share of transportation sales tax revenue to conservation. Some residents believe more funding should be directed toward relieving traffic congestion through additional road construction, intersection improvements, or expanded transit service. Others contend that preserving open space ultimately reduces future infrastructure costs by guiding development toward existing communities rather than extending roads, utilities, and public services into undeveloped areas.

The proposed $690 million allocation reflects Charleston County’s broader philosophy that transportation planning and land conservation are closely connected. Protecting strategic parcels can limit sprawling development, preserve evacuation corridors, reduce flooding risks, and help ensure future growth occurs in locations better suited for new infrastructure.

Ultimately, voters will decide whether that balance reflects their vision for Charleston County’s future. If approved, the investment would continue one of the nation’s most recognized county-level land conservation programs while helping preserve the landscapes that have long made the Lowcountry unlike anywhere else.
