Are you visiting Charleston, or are you just looking for things to do in the area? There is no shortage of things to do and see here! Charleston was founded in 1670 and is a living museum with an amazing history.

There are a lot of things to do with kids and your entire family, historical things to do, romantic things to do, unique things to do, and there are also plenty of free things to do in Charleston.

There is always something fun to do while you are here, and below is a list of my favorite things to do and see near Charleston!

Since the region around Charleston is frequently referred to as the Lowcountry, its rich Gullah and Creole history is reflected in the food as well as Southern components. Seafood is the absolute staple here, therefore you must try some before you leave.

The freshest catch, locally-mined oysters, She Crab soup, or shrimp (particularly, the shrimp n’ grits, a heavenly combination of local shrimp with creamy grits that’s served in a variety of ways till Sunday, depending on where you visit) are all recommended as first choices when you can.

Finally, and perhaps most crucially, be aware that Charleston’s culture is so established that cuisine is almost like a religion.

Keep Charleston Beautiful: How to Organize a Neighborhood Cleanup Event in Charleston

Get Involved

Keep Charleston Beautiful needs volunteer groups to clean up litter around the City. We conduct cleanups along roadways, at parks, and in marshes. KCB works with groups of any size and age! We are here to help support your community cleanup or beautification event.

How to organize a cleanup event

  • Pick a cleanup date – Organize a day that works best with your groups, and send KCB an email notifying us. If available, we will do our best to attend your cleanup event
  • Pick a cleanup location – If you’ve noticed an area with litter, suggest it. If not, Keep Charleston Beautiful has suggestions for spots in need of a cleanup.
  • Finalize volunteer numbers – Once we have an idea of how many people will be attending your cleanup, KCB will pack all your needed supplies (trash bags, disposable gloves, paper yard bags, rakes, safety vests, pruners, pickup sticks, and other supplies as needed). We will meet you at the location with these supplies, or you can pick them up from our office.
  • Make it an open event if you’d like – KCB can help recruit volunteers for your events by posting it on social media and in our newsletter. This is a great way to make an even bigger impact at your event.

Liability Forms and Safety Sheets

Please read over our event safety sheet (PDF), and have your volunteers sign our liability waiver (PDF). We want to keep our volunteers safe at cleanups!
