Clemson University broke ground on May 16 for a $130-million building that is expected to herald a new era of innovation and workforce development in advanced materials for South Carolina and the broader region.

The new Advanced Materials Innovation Complex (AMIC) will be a 143,000-square-foot facility designed for education and research and is scheduled to open at the end of 2025.

Advanced materials are new types of materials, often developed with cutting-edge technologies, that have special properties making them useful in a wide range of applications. They help make lasers more powerful, cars and planes more fuel efficient and sustainable energy more reliable and economically viable.

More than 960 advanced materials companies call South Carolina home, and the field accounted for 3,411 new jobs and $890 million in capital investment in the state from 2017-22, according to the state Department of Commerce.

Men and women wearing dress clothes are lined up and using shovels for a ceremonial groundbreaking into an orange raised box.
Clemson dignitaries participated in a ceremonial groundbreaking to mark the start of construction on the Advanced Materials Innovation Complex on the University’s main campus.

Clemson’s new facility will be a major part of Clemson’s efforts to supply the workforce for the advanced materials industry.

“The Advanced Materials Innovation Complex groundbreaking is a pivotal moment for Clemson University,” said President Jim Clements. “This state-of-the-art facility will shape the future of advanced materials through driving innovation, meeting workforce demands and promoting economic development. Through experiential learning, collaboration and cutting-edge research our faculty, staff and students will continue to elevate the State of South Carolina and beyond.”

The complex will be the University’s most technologically advanced facility. It will include cutting-edge research and teaching laboratories, synergistic classrooms and collaborative spaces for exploration and conversation outside the lab and classroom.

All students in the complex will conduct research, helping prepare them to be future leaders, innovators and entrepreneurs in advanced materials. The discipline is transformative in numerous fields, including advanced manufacturing, transportation, energy and health innovation.

The building will be the home of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. Researchers and educators from the departments of Materials Science and Engineering, Chemistry and Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering will work collaboratively in the new space.

Here is what Clemson officials had to say about the new facility:

“The groundbreaking of the Advanced Materials Innovation Complex represents Clemson University’s commitment to fostering excellence in education and research. This world-class facility will help Clemson attract some of the best and brightest faculty, students and staff. By providing cutting-edge labs and collaborative spaces, we are cultivating a dynamic environment that nurtures innovation and prepares our graduates to excel in the fast-changing landscape of advanced materials.”

— Robert Jones, executive vice president for academic affairs and provost

“The Advanced Materials Innovation Complex will be a cutting-edge advanced materials education and research facility, serving as a shining beacon for attracting top talent, both exceptional faculty and outstanding students. It will establish Clemson and our state as a national leader in advanced materials supporting industries in advanced manufacturing, transportation, energy, health innovation and next-generation computing. It will be the driver for research, innovation and for creating the future workforce to support our industry and overall economy. When we look back, a decade from now we will point to this very moment when we broke ground to create this facility, celebrating that it has served the very purpose it was intended to do– attracting new industry and jobs, bolstering our economy and bringing prosperity to all South Carolinians.

Anand Gramopadhye, dean of the College of Engineering, Computing and Applied Sciences

“The teams that will call AMIC home have a long history of collaboration across departments, colleges and campuses. Bringing them together under the roof of this state-of-the-art building will accelerate and amplify our collective impact, enabling us to drive innovation that will improve lives and livelihoods for people across our state, our nation and our world.”

Cynthia Y. Young, dean of the College of Science

Ty’s Roadside Coastal Kitchen (Mount Pleasant) – Great Food, Warm Southern Vibes and so much more

For many, the draw of Ty’s Roadside Coastal Kitchen is the enticing menu; for others, the casual and comforting restaurant environment or perhaps the inviting happy hour specials.

For us, Ty’s Roadside is the personal and inviting family style appeal that makes it a welcome addition to the Mount Pleasant, SC family of restaurants.

Let us tell a little bit more about Ty Neal and his vision:

Ty Neal, owner of Ty’s Roadside Coastal Kitchen, opened his doors at 713 Coleman Boulevard in 2020 in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic after moving to South Carolina with his wife, three kids and dog from the Washington D.C. area. It’s said that many of the businesses at this address experienced challenges unlike their neighbors, inevitably leading them to close up shop. Since their opening, Ty’s Roadside has demonstrated what it really takes to survive as a family business over the last three years.

With local charm and next-level Americana, Ty’s has a heart-warming presence within the community. Ty’s daughter, Frankie, runs head of house after school. Ty’s wife, Alaina, assists Frankie and helps out in the prep kitchen on her days off from work as a nurse. And his sister, Sarah, often comes up from Miami to help out her big brother wherever hands are needed.

Authentic family business is hard to come by, but that’s what makes Ty’s Roadside a cornerstone of the Mount Pleasant community.

If that doesn’t convince you, take a peak at these amazing menus and happy hour specials!

We will see y’all at Ty’s!!

Charleston County Parks breaks ground on renovations for Wiltown Community Center Park

[ADAMS RUN] – On Saturday, May 6, the Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission (CCPRC) broke ground on renovations for the park at Wiltown Community Center.

Wiltown Community Center is a community administered recreation area providing services for families in the surrounding Adams Run area. In an effort to renovate and expand recreational facilities in this part of Charleston County, CCPRC entered into a Memorandum of Agreement with the Wiltown Community Organization to care and maintain the renovated park through 2041. The conceptual site plan was created by CCPRC through a community participation process to identify and rank park features the community considered most critical.

A steering committee comprised of CCPRC representatives and Wiltown Community Center officers guided the development and approval of the final site plan. Some of the main driving design elements for the plan were the commitment to universal accessibility and durability of park features that require minimal maintenance.

Final site plan elements for the renovations of Wiltown Community Center include:

  • A colorful 3000-sq.-ft. playground with a thoughtful design to accommodate use for people of all ages, along with mix of accessible surfaces and playground features, and a sensory panel. Close to the playground will be a swinging bench and a covered picnic table.
  • A 50’ x 74’ combination basketball/pickleball court with accessible pathway to the court and the adjoining grass 70’ x 183’ multi-purpose activity field.
  • Major renovations to the outdoor shelter: existing bathrooms will be renovated to ADA standards; a third bathroom will be added off the catering kitchen; HVAC will be installed for the restroom and catering kitchen area; a new roof will be installed; wall height will be extended; and a new catering kitchen will be equipped with stainless steel work tables/countertops surfaces, stainless steel service carts, two sinks, a full-sized insulated heated holding/proofing cabinet, and a microwave and condiment cabinet station.
  • New 10’ x 10’ grill pad area near the outdoor shelter with an ADA stainless steel grill.
  • Widening and re-surfacing of the main road and adding two additional parking areas, making it safer and more accessible to the park features. The new parking areas will include accessible cement parking spaces.
  • New accessible paths to the new and renovated park features: playground, outdoor shelter, grill pad area, basketball/pickleball court and activity field.
  • Additional landscaping using native plantings.

Wiltown Community Center is located at 5779 Parkers Ferry Road in Adams Run, SC. The center will remain open to the public during the renovations; however, the park will close for short periods only when necessary to complete certain phases of the build. The project is expected to be completed in October 2023.

For updates on the project and the reopening timeframe, please visit CharlestonCountyParks.com (direct link).

The mission of CCPRC is to improve the quality of life in Charleston County by offering a diverse system of park facilities, programs and services.
