The Thumbs Up Guys Scholarship

At Miller, Dawson, Sigal, & Ward Injury Attorneys, we are loyal to our community. We have its back through thick and thin, protecting the rights of the people who belong to it. That’s why we’re known as the Thumbs Up Guys.

While ours is traditionally a reactionary role in society, it is our belief that to love your community and do right by it, you also have to be proactive. That is why we are pleased to launch the Thumbs Up Guys Scholarship. Because education paves the way for a society to flourish, we want to play a part in helping students get the schooling they desire to contribute something great to our community. The scholarship will grant three students a $1,000 scholarship each to be applied towards their tuition or other education-related expenses.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Students who have been accepted or currently attend a 2 or 4-year college or university in South Carolina.GPA of at least 3.0.

Employees of Miller, Dawson, Sigal, & Ward Injury Attorneys and their relatives are not eligible to participate.

Two years after opening a second manufacturing facility in the Charleston region, Cummins Turbo Technologies has announced an $11 million plant expansion. The company will double assembly capacity and greatly increase machining capacity at its existing plant in North Charlestons Palmetto Commerce Park, with plans to create 100 new jobs.

The new competitive expansion project was facilitated by the Charleston Regional Development Alliance in partnership with numerous public- and private-sector allies. The Alliance is an economic development organization working to advance the economy of the three-county Charleston region.

National publication honors family engagement initiative from North Charleston Elementary

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC – North Charleston Elementary School is the first school from Charleston County School District to be featured in the annual National Network of Partnership Schools (NNPS) Promising Partnership Practices handbook. The Dolphins are in the 2020 edition thanks to their initiative, Painting on Purpose with Parents.

The handbook is a collection of programs, events, and initiatives from schools across the country and the world. Forty entries from 14 districts in nine different states, as well as schools from Ireland and Scotland, are in this year’s edition.

The publication provides other schools with quality examples of community engagement from schools, which create better educational atmospheres and opportunities for students and their families.CCSD has been part of NNPS (sponsored by Johns Hopkins University) since 20 17; 40 of the district’s Title I schools are involved with this network.

North Charleston Elementary School’s (NCES) Painting on Purpose with Parents, which was held at the school in February 2020, linked artwork with behavioral goals of the school’s PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) program. An art activity reinforced the underlying goal of PBIS to support students’ positive behaviors and positive emotions about their own skills and talents.

With a parent/guardian partner, students also gained immediate family support and encouragement during a fun experience. Margaret Balcer (artist and Reading Interventionist at A.C. CorcoranElementary School), Sylvia Weeks (NCES P.E. teacher), and Tyra Johnson (NCES Parent Advocate) took the lead for the activity. Balcer gave step-by-step directions to students and parents on how to plan for a painting. Students showed parents skills that they learned in art class, as they paid attention to lines, shapes, colors, and blending techniques.

The experience helped students practice PBIS-related behaviors such as taking turns waiting for supplies, developing patience as the paint dried, and completing their paintings. Most importantly, the students practiced persistence. They did not North Charleston Elementary School_give up even if their painting did not turn out exactly as expected. Some students even encouraged their parents and friends to demonstrate this kind of dedication and patience.

“The project was important because painting is therapeutic and we wanted to offer families a wonderful experience and reward students,” said Johnson. “The school community is grateful because applying for an award or recognition is uncertain. However, we are overwhelmed with excitement to see our program highlighted in the Promising Partnership Practices handbook and to know we are the first school in our district to be recognized in this publication. We hope this will help other schools in CCSD pursue this kind of honor, and more importantly, increase their level of engagement with families.”

Jordan Jackson is the owner of Birch & Pen Boutique in the Northwoods Mall. He is taking the fashion industry and business world by storm. Just 19 years old, Jordan just closed the deal to open his first retail store location. Birch & Pen will open its doors to the public on Thursday, November 1 and have its grand opening on Saturday, November 3, 2018, 4pm-8pm.

Birch and Pen Boutique is a retail clothing and accessories boutique that specializes in high-fashion, trendy apparel for men and women at affordable prices. The brand choices will constantly evolve and set the standard for pop culture style. The Birch & Pen team will never allow their customers to settle for limited options or the mediocre. They will create experiences that customers can add into their everyday lifestyle. One of the store’s major standards is to encourage customers to always take risks, whether it’s redefining business wear or adding flavor to casual wear. The team will show customers how to confidently look their best ‘selves’ through fashion. Birch & Pen plans to be the trailblazer of the fashion industry, in a way that people would least expect.

Jordan has a strong eye for fashion and design and on weekly basis, he is being sought out for his advice on style and clothing. In addition, he does home-staging, decorating and furniture building/refurbishing. Now this gifted Hanahan High graduate desires to put his energy and experience into operating his retail clothing store. Being a teenager and an African American male in the North Charleston/Hanahan area could have been seen as a disadvantage to Jordan. However, he used these assets to courageously launch forward into an unchartered territory to become the youngest store owner in the Northwoods Mall. He hopes that his hard work and fearless walk of faith encourages young people to accomplish their dreams.
