Two Sides of Anne Frank: 80 Years Ago Today, August 1, 1944, Anne Frank made her final journal entry. A must read

By Mark A. Leon

80 Years Ago Today, Anne Frank completed her final journal entry at age 15 before being captured and taken away to a concentration camp.

In a profound confession of the heart, Anne discusses her two sides; the side most saw and the deeply personal side most never did. In a way, this entry speaks to so many of us and the two lives we lead.

Take a moment to sit and read this entry. It is profound and moving in its context, but even more powerful as part of the narrative of the being of the end for Anne Frank.

August 1, 1944

Dearest Kitty,

“A bundle of contradictions” was the end of my previous letter and is the beginning of this one. Can you please tell me exactly what “a bundle of contradictions” is? What does “contradiction” mean? Like so many words, it can be interpreted in two ways: a contradiction imposed from without and one imposed from within.

The former means not accepting other people’s opinions, always knowing best, having the last word; in short, all those unpleasant traits for which I’m known. The latter, for which I’m not known, is my own secret.

As I’ve told you many times, I’m split in two. One side contains my exuberant cheerfulness, my flippancy, my joy in life and, above all, my ability to appreciate the lighter side of things. By that I mean not finding anything wrong with flirtations, a kiss, an embrace, an off-colour joke. This side of me is usually lying in wait to ambush the other one, which is much purer, deeper and finer. No one knows Anne’s better side, and that’s why most people can’t stand me.

Oh, I can be an amusing clown for an afternoon, but after that everyone’s had enough of me to last a month. Actually, I’m what a romantic movie is to a profound thinker – a mere diversion, a comic interlude, something that is soon forgotten: not bad, but not particularly good either.

I hate having to tell you this, but why shouldn’t I admit it when I know it’s true? My lighter, more superficial side will always steal a march on the deeper side and therefore always win. You can’t imagine how often I’ve tried to push away this Anne, which is only half of what is known as Anne-to beat her down, hide her. But it doesn’t work, and I know why.

I’m afraid that people who know me as I usually am will discover I have another side, a better and finer side. I’m afraid they’ll mock me, think I’m ridiculous and sentimental and not take me seriously. I’m used to not being taken seriously, but only the “light-hearted” Anne is used to it and can put up with it; the “deeper” Anne is too weak. If I force the good Anne into the spotlight for even fifteen minutes, she shuts up like a clam the moment she’s called upon to speak, and lets Anne number one do the talking. Before I realize it, she’s disappeared.

So the nice Anne is never seen in company. She’s never made a single appearance, though she almost always takes the stage when I’m alone. I know exactly how I’d like to be, how I am… on the inside. But unfortunately I’m only like that with myself. And perhaps that’s why-no, I’m sure that’s the reason why I think of myself as happy on the inside and other people think I’m happy on the outside. I’m guided by the pure Anne within, but on the outside I’m nothing but a frolicsome little goat tugging at its tether.

As I’ve told you, what I say is not what I feel, which is why I have a reputation for being boy-crazy as well as a flirt, a smart aleck and a reader of romances. The happy-go-lucky Anne laughs, gives a flippant reply, shrugs her shoulders and pretends she doesn’t give a darn. The quiet Anne reacts in just the opposite way. If I’m being completely honest, I’ll have to admit that it does matter to me, that I’m trying very hard to change myself, but that I I’m always up against a more powerful enemy.

A voice within me is sobbing, “You see, that’s what’s become of you. You’re surrounded by negative opinions, dismayed looks and mocking faces, people, who dislike you, and all because you don’t listen to the advice of your own better half.”

Believe me, I’d like to listen, but it doesn’t work, because if I’m quiet and serious, everyone thinks I’m putting on a new act and I have to save myself with a joke, and then I’m not even talking about my own family, who assume I must be sick, stuff me with aspirins and sedatives, feel my neck and forehead to see if I have a temperature, ask about my bowel movements and berate me for being in a bad mood, until I just can’t keep it up anymore, because when everybody starts hovering over me, I get cross, then sad, and finally end up turning my heart inside g out, the bad part on the outside and the good part on the inside, and keep trying to find a way to become what I’d like to be and what I could be if… if only there were no other people in the world.

Yours, Anne M. Frank

The historic boutique hotel celebrates its official summer debut after its top-to-bottom reinvention

CHARLESTON, S.C., (July 30, 2024) – Following an extensive, multimillion-dollar reinvention, The Ansonborough Charleston—sourced, co-developed, capitalized and managed by Wright Investments, Inc. and developed by Continental Hospitality Group—will celebrate its official grand opening on September 3, 2024. Formerly known as The Ansonborough Inn, this intimate luxury inn, conveniently located in the heart of the city’s historic downtown district, will debut as a homebase for travelers seeking to discover genuine Charleston hospitality and an authentic neighborhood experience. Striking a balance between honoring history and embracing modern charm, The Ansonborough proudly embodies the vibrant spirit of Charleston’s oldest neighborhood established in the 1700s by Lord Anson, a British Royal Navy Officer who won the neighborhood in a game of cards according to lore.

“This is a momentous occasion as we officially open our doors and introduce dynamic new energy into the property,” said Larry Wright Jr., president and CEO of Wright Investments, Inc. “This building has stood as a cornerstone of the neighborhood for over a century, and we humbly embraced the responsibility of preserving its rich legacy throughout this renovation.”

Generous Guest Rooms, Neighborhood Bar and Private Rooftop Scene
A uniquely Charleston guest experience begins upon arrival into a newly transformed, intimate lobby and communal area. Thoughtfully crafted with ample open seating, it fosters interaction and is a hub for social gatherings. The hotel’s 45 guest rooms are among the most spacious in the city, with 20 percent exceeding 600 square feet and an average size of 475 square feet. A desirable mix of accommodations ranges from inviting, standard luxury guest rooms to a wide variety of large suite configurations. Each room has a distinct personality and charm, many with 16- to 20-foot-high ceilings and exposed brick and timbers, adding warmth and richness to each stay. The hotel boasts the newly added Scarborough & Squirrel Bar, which offers elevated light fare and artisanal cocktails, beers, and wines, along with a poker room paying homage to Captain Anson’s legacy that’s tucked away behind a discreet bookcase enclave. The new Rooftop Garden is an exclusive-to-guest outdoor oasis offering comfortable seating areas, fire pits and surround sound—all enveloped in a lush landscape and with views of Charleston’s ubiquitous church steeples and the Cooper River Bridge. For guests that desire more space, the 871-square-foot Admiral Suite offers apartment-style accommodations complete with a walk-in shower, Peloton Bike, dining table and gas fireplace, perfect for special occasions or entertaining.

Distinct, Historical Design
The Ansonborough Charleston was originally built as a three-story stationer’s warehouse circa 1901 and has been thoughtfully restored by award-winning designer, Studio 11 Design. The Ansonborough’s new personality has been brought to life through an entirely new visual landscape that’s rooted in its history. Guest room highlights include antique subway tile mirror backsplashes, brushed gold fixtures, mosaic tile flooring and Skara Brae quartz countertops. Adorned with palmettos, crepe myrtles and local flora, and featuring exposed heart pine beams, local fire red brick, historic antiques and a vast collection of original artwork, the hotel’s storied past echoes throughout the renovation.

“After a major renovation and repositioning, the Ansonborough is now a special place to be discovered. We are excited to add to Charleston’s incredible and evolving legacy, a truly unique luxury hotel to be discovered and enjoyed for many years to come,” said Adam Valente, president of Continental Hospitality Group.

“Throughout the renovation process, our goal was to unearth the property’s rich history and distinctive character that resides within its wall. The property now balances historic and timeless charm with elegance and modern comfort,” said General Manager Carrie Huston. “It’s truly gratifying to see this final vision take shape, and we eagerly look forward to extending a warm welcome to guests from around the world.”

Governor McMaster, Sen. Graham, Rep. Clyburn Announce SCDOT Awarded $175 Million to Replace Bridges on I-95 over Lake Marion

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Governor Henry McMaster, U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham, and U.S. Congressman James E. Clyburn announced today the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) has been awarded $175 million by the Federal Highway Administration to replace four bridges on I-95 over Lake Marion. This award is one of the largest federal discretionary grant awards ever received by SCDOT.

Senator Graham and Congressman Clyburn led the South Carolina Congressional Delegation in securing funding for the project. In November, Governor McMaster sent a letter to U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg supporting the delegation’s efforts.

The grant will allow the four bridges, originally constructed in 1968, with narrow shoulders and roadway approaches, to be rebuilt into one bridge with two 12-foot travel lanes in both the southbound and northbound direction. The project would provide a barrier-separated bicycle and pedestrian path.

The project will also provide space for a potential future additional travel lane in each direction with a 10-foot minimum inside shoulder and a 12-foot outside shoulder in each direction. You can read more on the project here.

Governor Henry McMaster:

“The I-95 bridge project has long been a top priority in South Carolina, and once complete, it will reduce highway congestion, improve safety and enhance coastal evacuation capabilities during major hurricanes,” said Governor Henry McMaster. “This could not have been accomplished without the work of Team South Carolina, and especially the work of Congressman Clyburn and Senator Graham, who worked tirelessly to secure this funding.”

Senator Lindsey Graham:

“This $175 million in funding to replace the I-95 bridges over Lake Marion is great news for the state of South Carolina. I’ve enjoyed working with Congressman Clyburn and Governor McMaster to make the case for the necessity of this grant. I appreciate Secretary Buttigieg and the Department of Transportation for understanding the merits of our grant application. This will be transformative for the region. When people choose to work together, good things happen for South Carolina.”

Congressman James E. Clyburn:

“Today marks another significant milestone in the Biden-Harris Administration’s effort to repair critical infrastructure in rural communities. This long-overdue project will not only benefit the residents of Orangeburg and Clarendon — it will also help ensure safety, support economic growth, and enhance connectivity for South Carolinians across the state for years to come.”

Secretary of Transportation Justin P. Powell:

“Today’s announcement marks the beginning of a long-awaited and nationally important project that will transform this region. SCDOT worked aggressively to make this project shovel ready and I expect construction will be underway next year. This bridge is a critical link in the east coast supply chain and connects the communities here with economic opportunity, education and healthcare. We are making tremendous progress to advance the priorities of South Carolinians and I look forward to delivering a project that will make our state proud.”

SCDOT Commission Chair Pamela Christopher:

“I’m proud of the work the team at SCDOT is doing. Fixing aging infrastructure is a goal of our 10-year plan and this project will improve the flow of people and goods through our state. I want to thank our Governor, our representatives in Washington and our South Carolina General Assembly for their continued support and investment in moving South Carolina forward.”

Tips for Achieving an Amicable Divorce in the Charleston, SC and others areas of the Lowcountry

How Can I Get An Amicable Divorce?

Divorce is often portrayed as a contentious, dramatic process filled with conflict and animosity. However, it doesn’t have to be that way. With the right approach and mindset, it’s possible to end your marriage with mutual respect, cooperation, and dignity. Achieving an amicable divorce in Charleston, SC, or anywhere else, is within reach if both parties are willing to prioritize open communication, compromise, and understanding.

Below are five key steps to achieving a peaceful divorce.

  1. Start with Open Communication:

Effective communication is the cornerstone of any amicable divorce. It’s essential to approach discussions with your spouse openly, honestly, and respectfully. Clearly communicate your needs, concerns, and priorities while also actively listening to your spouse’s perspective. By fostering an environment of open dialogue, you can work together to find common ground and reach mutually acceptable agreements.

  • Focus on the Big Picture:

During a divorce, it’s easy to get caught up in minor details and petty disputes. However, it’s crucial to keep the big picture in mind and focus on the long-term well-being of both parties and any children involved. Ask yourself: What are my ultimate goals for the divorce process? How can we prioritize cooperation and compromise to achieve those goals? By maintaining perspective and focusing on the broader objectives, you can avoid unnecessary conflicts and work towards a more amicable resolution.

  • Consider Mediation:

Mediation is a highly effective alternative to traditional litigation for couples seeking an amicable divorce. In Charleston, SC, and beyond, divorce mediation offers a collaborative, non-adversarial approach to resolving disputes with the assistance of a neutral mediator. During mediation sessions, couples can work together to address key issues such as asset division, child custody, and spousal support in a cooperative and constructive manner. By empowering couples to make their own decisions and find creative solutions, mediation can help minimize conflict, reduce stress, and streamline the divorce process.

  • Practice Empathy and Compassion:

Divorce is a challenging and emotionally charged experience for all parties involved. It’s essential to approach the process with empathy and compassion, recognizing that both you and your spouse are navigating uncharted territory and experiencing a range of emotions. Be mindful of each other’s feelings, validate each other’s experiences, and strive to treat each other with kindness and understanding. By demonstrating empathy and compassion, you can foster a more positive and cooperative dynamic, making it easier to achieve an amicable divorce.

  • Prioritize Self-Care:

Divorce can take a significant toll on your emotional and mental well-being. It’s crucial to prioritize self-care throughout the process, taking time to recharge, relax, and engage in activities that bring you joy and fulfillment. Whether it’s practicing mindfulness, exercising, or spending time with supportive friends and family, investing in self-care can help you navigate the challenges of divorce with resilience and grace.

By following these steps, you can navigate the end of your marriage with dignity and grace.

Time names the International African American Museum (Charleston, SC) one of World’s Greatest Places in 2024

roposed publicly by former Charleston mayor Joe Riley more than 20 years ago, and championed by Congressman Jim Clyburn, the nation’s second largest African American museum finally opened last summer. To symbolize the sacredness of its location on Gadsden’s Wharf, a place where African captives arrived by the thousands, the International African American Museum (IAAM) is elevated 13 feet above the ground. The experience of visiting kicks off in the African Ancestors Memorial Garden, designed by landscape architect and MacArthur Genius Grant recipient Walter Hood, with installations such as “Tide Tribute,” a fountain of water washing over a replica of the horrifically cruel “Brookes” slave ship diagram, honoring its human cargo. Inside, a glassed entrance opens to 8-foot screens flashing faces of the African Diaspora and pre-colonial landscapes, teasing the expansive interactive journey of tragedy and triumph that unfolds over the museum’s 22,280-plus-square-foot gallery space. Core exhibits include “African Roots/African Routes” which explores pre-enslavement origins in West and West Central Africa, while “Carolina Gold/Memories of the Enslaved” delves into the Lowcountry’s past. All told, the collection features more than 150 artifacts, 30 works of art, and nearly 50 films. Connecting past and future on a more personal level, the IAAM’s Center for Family History also offers genealogy services and records oral histories.
