PURE Theatre Announces the World Premiere of Honoria Quietly Drawing Strength From Her Truth

“I just needed — still need — to connect to my past. Even if that past is not pretty.”

Charleston, S.C. – March 18, 2022 – PURE Theatre is debuting the world premiere of Honoria Quietly Drawing Strength From Her Truth by Clifton Campbell. The show will run from April 27 through May 14 at the Cannon Street Arts Center.

A social activist, a Vietnam vet and a progressive theatre artist, each eager to tell their stories to the world, vie for a valuable piece of property donated by an affluent Southern family with their own complicated past. Honoria Quietly Drawing Strength From Her Truth is a lurching and comical exploration of our failures to connect. A culture of disparate voices fighting to be heard, Honoria explores the unimpeachable nature of privilege, and the unsettling truths about the legacies we think we leave behind.

Directed by PURE Artistic Director Sharon Graci, the show will feature PURE Core Ensemble members Sullivan Hamilton, Josh Wilhoit, Michael Smallwood, Tonya Smalls Williams, Brannen Daughtery, Randy Neale, and R.W. Smith.

Clifton Campbell is the author of 16 full-length and short plays. His work has been produced at Victory Gardens, American Blues, Pegasus, and Stormfield Theatre, in Chicago, the latter as Playwright-in-Residence. In Los Angeles, his work has been produced at Cast Theatre, Carter-Thor Actors Studio and Blue Line Theatre. His play Emerald Tree Boa was workshopped at the Mark Taper Forum under the direction of Mark Medoff, produced by Gordon Davidson. In addition to his work for the stage, Mr. Campbell has worked in television for more than three decades. He is currently developing Middlebrook Strong, a one-hour dramedy with eOne Entertainment, produced and directed by Doug Liman and Hypnotic Films.

Tickets for Honoria range from $28 to $40. There will be two pay-what-you-will performances on Thursday, April 21 and Wednesday, April 27.  $10 student rush tickets are available at the door. The show will be simulcast as part of PURE Live on Saturday, April 30, May 7 and May 14 and is available through the All-Access Flex Pass for three, four or eight tickets.
