Share Our Suzy: SOS Lowcountry — A Legacy of Care in the Lowcountry

By Mark A Leon

Share Our Suzy: SOS Lowcountry was created to honor the life and spirit of Suzy McGrane, a young woman whose journey with breast cancer inspired her family and friends to take action. What began as a small effort to support Suzy during her treatment has grown into a mission that continues to serve breast cancer patients across the Charleston area and beyond.

The organization’s purpose is simple yet powerful: to enhance the quality of life for breast cancer patients by providing financial assistance for needs that insurance often does not cover. Their work allows patients to focus on healing, rather than worrying about everyday expenses.

Filling the Gaps

A breast cancer diagnosis impacts far more than just health. Treatment schedules, time away from work, and the costs of daily living can quickly become overwhelming. SOS Lowcountry provides practical support such as:

  • Rent or utility assistance
  • Transportation and gas cards for treatment
  • Groceries and household expenses
  • Childcare help
  • Wigs, prosthetics, and other wellness needs

This support lightens the load for patients and families, giving them the peace of mind to focus on recovery.

Local Support, Direct Impact

SOS Lowcountry is unique in that it is entirely volunteer-driven, with little to no overhead. This means nearly every dollar raised goes directly to patient support. Donations stay within the Lowcountry, ensuring help reaches families right here in the community.

In 2023, the organization supported roughly 100 patients, working closely with the Suzy McGrane Breast Cancer Center at Roper Hospital and the Beaufort Memorial Cancer Center. Their reach continues to grow, extending support into both urban and rural areas of the region.

Building Community Through Events

Fundraising events are central to SOS Lowcountry’s mission. From the “Pink in the Rink” hockey game with the Charleston Stingrays to the Swing for SOS Tournament on Daniel Island, these gatherings raise essential funds while also fostering community connection and awareness.

Local businesses often partner with SOS through special promotions and give-back nights, further amplifying the organization’s impact. These collaborations highlight the strength of the Lowcountry community in supporting one another.

Why It Matters

A cancer diagnosis affects more than the patient — it touches families, workplaces, and entire communities. By stepping in to cover basic needs, SOS Lowcountry helps restore balance, dignity, and hope during an incredibly difficult time. Their work is a reminder that true healing involves more than medicine; it requires compassion, care, and community support.
