The USA’s top most popular 10 states for winter vacations, according to Google data – Look where South Carolina ranked
- California is America’s most Googled vacation state, with more than one million searches in the past month
- People in Maine are the most desperate to get away, recording the highest level of searches for ‘Vacation’
- 92,000 people have looked for Airbnbs in Florida in the past 30 days
The results revealed that California is that state that Americans most want to visit on vacation this winter.
The study by printing experts Printique used Google data to analyze how often terms such as vacation, weekend away, Airbnb and hotel were searched alongside each of the 50 states.
- California came in first for USA’s top getaway spots with more than one million vacation-related searches per month on average. ‘California Airbnbs’ is searched an average of 13,600 times per month and ‘California hotels’ is searched 12,000 times. The states that were looking to get away to California’s mild winter climate the most over the past month were New Mexico, Arkansas, Montana and Idaho. Californians however revealed they most wanted to vacation in Nevada and Oregon the most.
- Hawaii came in second with an overall 964,470 searches, the term ‘Hawaii vacation’ alone is searched on average 48,000 times each month. The states where a trip to Hawaii was most popular were Indiana, Dakota, Mississippi and Oregon.
- Florida was the third most popular vacation state with a search total of 957,720 searches per month. The states searching to visit Florida the most were Vermont, West Virginia and Maine. ‘Florida Airbnbs’ is searched 92,000 times- one of the highest figures for a single term. Florida residents were most likely to search for vacations in Georgia and Illinois this year.
- Georgia came in fourth for a winter getaway with 951,110 as its search total, with terms like ‘Georgia vacation’ being searched 1,200 times. South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Minnesota were the top vacationers searching for the state, while people in Georgia were most interested in going to Florida.
- New York came in fifth with a total search of 924,000, with hotels in the Big Apple being searched 13,000 times and ‘New York vacation’ 2,600 times. New York was most popular with people in Nebraska, Rhode Island, Louisiana and Kansas. New Yorkers were most interested in trips to Nevada, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and New Jersey.
- North Carolina came in sixth with a search total of 906,310. There were 2,200 monthly searches for ‘North Carolina Airbnb’ and 2,000 searches for ‘North Carolina hotels’. The state was most popular with searchers in New Jersey, Louisiana, Wisconsin and Ohio.
- Texas came in seventh and was top with states such as Wisconsin, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Arkansas. The state had an overall search of 872,820. The term ‘Texas Vacation’ had been searched 3,000 times in the past month alone. Texans were searching for their winter breaks in the New Mexico, Nevada, Arkansas, Louisiana the study revealed.
- Pennsylvania had a total of 863,310 searches putting it in eighth place. There were 1,800 searches for ‘Pennsylvania vacation’ in the past month. It was mostly being searched by states such as New Jersey, New York and Virginia.
- Tennessee made ninth place with people in states such as Arkansas, South Carolina, Alabama and Mississippi searching to getaway there. The state’s search total was 745,600 and the term ‘Tennessee vacation’ has been searched 6,000 times, along with ‘Tennessee hotels’ 3,000 times in the past month. People in Tennessee have been looking for their winter vacations in Utah and Wyoming.
- South Carolina took the number 10 spot with a total search of 712,500. With terms like ‘South Carolina hotels’ being searched 3,900 times and ‘South Carolina Airbnb’ 4,000 times. The states that were most interested in taking their vacation in the state were West Virginia, North Carolina, Kentucky and Virginia.
North Dakota came in last place with the lowest combined search score, while states such as Idaho, Kansas and Delaware also ranked near the bottom of the list.
A spokesperson for Printique commented on the findings of the study:
“It’s fascinating to see which states are the most popular for a winter getaway. The data shows that winter sun is the most popular option, with states that can offer some warmth dominating the top of the list. Vacation photo albums have probably been taken down from the shelf much more often since March 2020 as people have reminisced about their amazing trips. This data shows how keen the public are ready to travel and make new memories that will last for a lifetime.”
