Charleston Photography Spotlight: Sally Gray Mahon (Open Aperture Photography)

On May 15, 2018, just over a year ago to the day, Sally Gray Mahon left a stable marketing career with salary, benefits and set hours to begin her dream of exposing love, passion, and emotion through her photographic eye. Thus, Open Aperture Photography in Charleston was born.

“I had no savings, no business plan, and no idea that May 15th would become such an important date in my little world. This year has been filled to the brim with bitter tears and explosive joy and experiences I never thought I would deserve. I have made embarrassing mistakes. I have created things I am proud of. I have worked harder than I thought I ever could to build something worth offering. I can’t believe it’s real. Every client, collaborator, and critic. Every partner and teacher and friend. Every human that has allowed me in. I am weeping in the parking lot as I type this mess of words. I am so grateful to be here. There is so much still to learn. I can’t believe it’s real. I can’t believe it” – Sally Gray Mahon

Beyond every picture is a vision and story that is captured forever for generations to learn from, cherish and embrace. Photography has a responsibility to tell a story and capture the essence of a moment. That takes a level of heart that so many never understand. It is this heart that makes this story and profile so special.

Sally Gray Mahon has taken a tremendous risk to follow her heart and is bringing so many along with her on this journey.

Her eye for looking beyond the subject and exposing their feelings and bringing a sense of love and togetherness to the photographic community makes her one of the beautiful stories in Charleston.

From weddings to engagements, music events to portraits, this eclectic and visionary artist is a gift to the Lowcountry. As Sally states in her bio, it is all about the human experience.

We were fortunate to see her in action at RapFest 2019 at The Purple Buffalo on Saturday, May 25th. Her vision and connection to her subjects painted a visual of just how dedicated she is to her art and the message she wants to share.
