New study reveals South Carolina has the highest percentage of bridges in poor condition in the nation

Thousands of South Carolinians cross poor condition bridges every day without realizing it. A new study by Bridgford, Gleason & Artinian reveals how South Carolina stacks up to the rest of the nation when it comes to bridge conditions .

Key Findings:

  • South Carolina is the only state in the nation with more than 1 in 4 bridges in poor condition.
  • Of 9,481 bridges, 2,642 of them received a rating of 4 or lower by the Federal Highway Administration.
  • The national average of bridges rated in poor condition is only 10.8% versus South Carolina’s 27.9%.

I work with Bridgford, Gleason & Artinian who published a nationwide study on the condition of bridges across the US.

In response to your failing bridges article, my 80 year old mother and 75 year old aunt had a chunk of concrete fly through their window on I-85. It was a large chunk and you could see where the rebar had been. My aunt was driving, but my mom sustained the most physical injuries. Broken jaw, broken shoulder, puncture wounds in neck, knocked out/broken teeth just to name a few of her injuries. Luckily she was napping and her head had dropped to the left or it would’ve been fatal. The highway patrolman wrote up the incident noting the 20+ lb chunk had come from a bridge/overpass (as a piece of it, not thrown). They filed a lawsuit with DOT for damages, and it’s been 3 years now. I get enraged thinking that my mother and aunt went through all of that with permanent damage due to negligence, and the DOT is taking their time in making it right (settlement and focusing on fixing these dangerous issues). My mother lost her independence, her real teeth, and struggled with arm/hand issues. My aunt was emotional damaged by the horror of the incident as well. Just wanted to put some faces to this issue.
