Charleston, SC Lands Among LinkedIn’s Top U.S. Cities on the Rise for Jobs in 2026

By Mark A Leon

Charleston has long been celebrated for its historic streets, award-winning restaurants, and coastal beauty. Now, it is earning national attention for something equally important: opportunity.

According to LinkedIn’s newly released 2026 Cities on the Rise report, the Charleston metropolitan area ranks No. 6 in the nation among the fastest-growing U.S. metro areas for jobs, hiring momentum, and talent migration. The annual ranking highlights mid-sized cities where employers are expanding, professionals are relocating, and career opportunities continue to accelerate.

For Charleston residents, this recognition simply confirms what many have witnessed firsthand over the past several years.

It is also important to note that of the Top 25 listed, Charleston has the highest average home listing price: $928,265

Why Charleston Continues to Grow

The Charleston region has transformed from a tourism-driven economy into one of the Southeast’s most diverse employment markets.

Today’s economy is powered by a blend of industries including:

  • Advanced manufacturing
  • Aerospace
  • Healthcare
  • Technology
  • Logistics and shipping
  • Defense
  • Higher education
  • Hospitality and tourism

This diversity has made the region more resilient while attracting workers from across the country seeking both career advancement and an exceptional quality of life.

Major Employers Continue to Expand

Several nationally recognized employers anchor the Charleston economy.

Among the region’s largest employers are:

  • Joint Base Charleston
  • Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC)
  • Boeing South Carolina
  • Roper St. Francis Healthcare
  • Charleston County School District
  • The Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center
  • College of Charleston

These organizations support thousands of jobs while helping attract suppliers, startups, research partners, and entrepreneurs throughout Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester counties.

Silicon Harbor Keeps Growing

Charleston’s reputation as “Silicon Harbor” continues to strengthen.

Technology companies, software startups, fintech firms, and creative agencies have increasingly chosen Charleston because of its educated workforce, lower operating costs compared to larger metropolitan areas, and strong entrepreneurial ecosystem.

At the same time, advanced manufacturers continue investing throughout the Lowcountry, creating opportunities in engineering, robotics, supply chain management, production, and skilled trades.

Healthcare remains another major driver of employment, with MUSC and regional hospital systems continually adding positions as the area’s population grows.

Talent Is Moving to Charleston

LinkedIn’s rankings measure more than job postings.

The report evaluates hiring growth, workforce migration, and where professionals are choosing to relocate. Charleston’s placement among the nation’s top emerging job markets reflects its ability to attract experienced professionals while retaining graduates from local colleges and universities.

That migration is helping fuel growth across industries ranging from healthcare and education to technology, finance, construction, and professional services.

Growth Brings New Challenges

Rapid success also presents challenges.

Housing affordability, transportation infrastructure, workforce housing, and traffic congestion remain major concerns for both employers and employees. As more people relocate to the region, local governments and business leaders continue investing in roads, public infrastructure, and housing initiatives designed to support long-term growth.

A Bright Future for the Lowcountry

Charleston’s economy today looks remarkably different than it did just two decades ago.

While tourism remains one of its signature industries, the region has matured into a nationally competitive employment center with opportunities spanning healthcare, aerospace, manufacturing, technology, logistics, education, and entrepreneurship.

Being named one of LinkedIn’s Top 10 Cities on the Rise is more than a ranking—it reflects the confidence employers, investors, and professionals have in Charleston’s future.

For job seekers, graduates, entrepreneurs, and businesses considering relocation, the message is clear: Charleston is no longer simply one of America’s favorite places to visit. It has become one of the country’s most promising places to build a career.
