The Lowcountry Fish & Grits Music Festival will return to Hilton Head Island on Saturday, October 3, 2026, bringing together music, food, art and community for a celebration rooted in the rich traditions of the Gullah Geechee culture.
The family-friendly, one-day festival will take place from 12 to 6 p.m. at Lowcountry Celebration Park, 94 Pope Avenue, Hilton Head Island.
A Celebration of Gullah Geechee Culture
At its heart, Fish & Grits is about more than a day of entertainment. The festival’s mission is to raise awareness of the unique Gullah Geechee culture, its evolution and its connections to the African diaspora through music, food, visual and performing arts, and community engagement.
The festival draws inspiration from the Lowcountry’s deep African American cultural history. Shrimp and grits, for example, has roots as a staple of Gullah Geechee kitchens, while musical traditions that helped shape blues, jazz and other American genres developed within African American communities along the coastal Southeast.
Music Across Multiple Genres
Music will be a central part of the afternoon, with performances representing the broad musical traditions of the Lowcountry and African diaspora.
The festival’s performers have included artists and groups such as Gwen Yvette, Frankie Quiñones, Vascola Stoney, Louise Cohen, Votte Hall, Angela Bonaparte and Company, Latrese Bush, the McIntosh County Shouters and La Bodega.
The musical program encompasses R&B, jazz, funk, folk and spoken word, creating a diverse soundtrack for the festival’s cultural celebration.
Food, Art & Local Vendors
Food is naturally another major component of Fish & Grits. Festivalgoers can expect food offerings inspired by Lowcountry and Gullah Geechee traditions, along with vendors showcasing art, clothing, handmade goods and other locally inspired products.
The festival describes its marketplace as an opportunity to experience the culture through art, food, clothing and more, making the event as much a cultural marketplace as a music festival.
Previous editions have also featured food trucks, craft vendors and an oyster roast, reflecting the festival’s emphasis on the culinary traditions of the Lowcountry.
A Day on Hilton Head Island
Set at Lowcountry Celebration Park, the festival offers an opportunity to spend an autumn Saturday experiencing live music, regional food and cultural traditions in one of the Lowcountry’s most recognizable communities.
Organizers envision Fish & Grits as a gathering for families and friends while creating greater awareness of Gullah Geechee history and its continuing influence on Lowcountry culture.
