Empowered Surfer Girl – Original Poem

Read More

By Mark A. Leon

In the depths of azure waves, they rise, Warrior women with salt-streaked eyes, Gleaming hearts that fiercely beat, Empowered souls, the ocean’s fleet.

Upon their boards, they dance with grace, Chasing the sun in every embrace, A symphony of strength and motion, Ocean’s daughters, bound by devotion.

With hair like seaweed, flowing wild, They ride the tides, unreconciled, Against the odds, they stand tall, Conquering fears, they break the wall.

Embracing swells with fearless might, They ride the waves, their hearts alight, Defying norms and limitations, Challenging societal expectations.

In barrels deep, they find their power, For, in the sea, no constraints devour, Their spirit roars, an ocean’s song, Resilient, they belong.

Through every wipeout, they persist, Resilience carved within their fist, Unified with the ocean’s might, Harnessing strength with every fight.

Beyond the waves, their voices rise, Fierce advocates for the seas’ demise, Protectors of the water’s soul, United in a righteous goal.

In the sunset’s embrace, they gather, Kindred spirits, hand in hand, they tether, Building a world of sisterhood, Empowering others, they’ve withstood.

So let their tales inspire anew, The legacy of women who grew, In oceans’ depths, they find their voice, In surfers’ hearts, they find their choice.

With every wave that they embrace, They find empowerment’s warm embrace, Forever bound to the ocean’s sway, Female surfers, fierce and free, they stay.

Charleston-North Charleston rank 3rd among mid-sized U.S. metros for coworking spaces

Read More

To determine the exact locations where workers have the best chances of finding a coworking space close to their homes, we leveraged proprietary data as of July 2023 and examined the number and distribution of coworking spaces on a metro level, ranking the metros according to the highest share of zip codes that have coworking spaces.

For a more relevant ranking, we divided the 350+ metros analyzed into three different brackets: large metros with populations of more than 1 million; mid-sized metros with 500,000 to 1 million residents; and smaller metros with populations of less than 500,000.

Here are our main findings:

  • Charleston-North Charleston takes the 3rd place among mid-sized U.S. metros, following Bridgeport-Stamford-Norwalk, CT;
  • Boasting 59 zip codes and 22 coworking spaces, the Charleston metro area registered coworking spaces in 15.3% of its total zip codes;
  • More precisely, 9 zip codes in the Charleston metro area have at least one coworking space available for residents, making it easy for them to find a flex workspace close to home or their area of interest;
  • Moreover, the city of Charleston recorded flex workspaces in 18.8% of its total zip codes, while North Charleston reached a 40% share;
  • The East Coast is home to the most mid-sized metros with evenly distributed coworking spaces, with Durham, NC, in the lead.

Sea Turtle Hatching: New Life Begins – Original Poem

Read More

In the soft, sandy cradle by the shore, A tale of wonder begins to unfurl. Beneath the moon’s ethereal glow, Sea turtle hatchlings stir and twirl.

Tiny warriors, born from the sea’s embrace, Emerge from eggs buried deep in the sand. Their journey begins, an ancient race, Guided by nature’s instinctual hand.

With flippers fluttering, they venture forth, On a quest fraught with perilous trials. Their path illuminated by stars above, And the whispered secrets of ocean miles.

Like diamonds glinting on the waves, These precious lives start their ascent. With each step, a courageous dance they crave, Toward the beckoning ocean’s scent.

The sea, their destiny and their home, A vast expanse of mystery untold. In tiny frames, a spirit fiercely roams, Bound for a future yet to unfold.

Oh, how the heavens weep with pride, As these hatchlings face the daunting sea. Instinct and resilience are their guide, As they venture where they’re meant to be.

Against the odds, they must embark, For dangers lie in wait along the shore. Yet united they are, no need to hark, With every hatchling, a promise to restore.

Together they brave the treacherous land, A symphony of life beneath the moon’s gleam. In harmony, they march, an unwavering band, To embrace the ocean’s vast, timeless dream.

So let us stand witness to this miracle’s birth, And cherish each hatchling’s valiant flight. For in their journey lies a lesson of worth, That courage and unity shall lead us to the light.

Local Charleston Artist Deane V. Bowers raises over $32K for Mental Wellness Care for Nurses

Personal Story by Deane V. Bowers

Happy Summer to you! This has been one of the most amazing summers for me. I haven’t traveled anywhere, or taken an art class, gone to a concert or even attended a festival or an art show. Instead, I have spent a lot of time in a local hospital meeting some amazing real-life heroes.

Before the summer began, I wanted to find a way to celebrate and honor some very special people in the Charleston area. My summertime would not involve long hours in my studio creating new artwork or traveling to exotic places. Instead, summer would be consist of some beautiful opportunities to make some new friends with some incredible human beings.

Since early June, my oldest daughter Campbell and I have had the pleasure of honoring the most inspiring, dedicated and selfless Nurses in the Charleston area. Each week, we have surprised a different group of Critical Care Nurses with gratitude lunches. These courageous Nurses work in the 10 different Specialty Intensive Care Units at The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC).

Each group of Nurses played a vital role in caring for some of the thousands of COVID-19 patients in South Carolina over the past few years and were essential in helping our community navigate the pandemic. Their courage and bravery during such an unprecedented time was truly heroic.

In meeting each group, Campbell and I were deeply moved by their great big smiles and the glimmer in their eyes as they shared their love of Nursing with us. They are the backbone of the healthcare system in Charleston and are so much more than simply caregivers. They lovingly showed us this on a daily basis during the pandemic and continue to show us today. And their bright, beautiful smiles are still lighting up rooms three and half years after the onset of COVID-19.

Although the pandemic is officially behind us does not mean our efforts to honor and thank healthcare workers should be. Campbell and I are just everyday citizens who enlisted the help of several local restaurants to donate delicious meals that were a symbol of community pride, gratitude and thanks.

Nurses who have the most stressful, high demanding jobs and who never have the opportunity to leave their units for a meal were the recipients of these lunches. Our goal was to show them how grateful we are for all they do day in and day out and that they are still supported, loved and greatly appreciated by the community.

These surprise meal celebrations also marked the end of a successful fundraising campaign called The Together While Apart Thank You Nurses Campaign that honors Nurses across the country. This campaign was established in May 2022 in partnership with the American Nurses Association and their Foundation. All money raised has gone directly towards the American Nurses Foundation’s Wellness Initiative which was established in response to the tremendous toll the pandemic had on Nurses. It provides wellness care to RN’s across the country and enables them to receive free wellness care screenings, financial planning, job enrichment resources as well as overall wellness care.

In a year’s time, The Together While Apart Thank You Nurses Campaign has raised over $32,000! That is $12,000 more than the original goal of $20,200! Donations have poured into this Campaign because so many people wanted to show their deep appreciation and respect for Nurses. The desire to give back and ensure Nurses have the wellness resources they deserve and desperately need have made The Together While Apart Thank You Nurses Campaign such a success. So far, over 2,000 Nurse have been able to access free mental health screenings thanks to funding provided directly by this Campaign.

There is no better way to conclude this fundraiser than to come full circle and celebrate some of the Nurses who guided us through this worldwide health crisis. By taking some time this summer to salute and applaud them with gratitude meals, may these Nurses continue to feel treasured and valued.

Meeting Maggie, Janie, Susan, Charles, Dave Krystal, Sheryl, Lara, Julie, Kat, Debbie, Marc, Peter, Denise, Kimberley, Alexis, Katelyn, Thomas and Juliette (just to name a few) made my heart grow 10 sizes bigger. They showed me what truly matters and how insignificant some of my small worries are in the big scheme of life. They courageously took the time to share their reflections about working through the pandemic. In hearing their stories, I learned what true kindness, compassion, bravery and dedication look like. I am a better person for meeting these Earth Angels! Personally, It was an unforgettable experience to finally meet my heroes in person!

I hope on their hardest days; these Nurses will remember that they are seen and supported. They touch more lives than they realize.

Campbell and I encourage you to find your own way to honor community helpers in your area, whether they be teachers, police, firefighters, EMS or any other group. Never underestimate the power and importance of saying “thank you.”
