USPS Operation Santa Now Accepting Letters From Kids and Families Across the Country

WASHINGTON, Sept. 15, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — The U.S. Postal Service today kicked off the 2025 season of USPS Operation Santa, inviting children and families across the country to begin writing and sending letters to Santa Claus. The beloved program, now in its 113th year, connects letter writers with generous individuals and organizations who help fulfill their holiday wishes.

Beginning today, individuals and families can submit letters following program guidelines available at USPSOperationSanta.com. Letters must be postmarked by Dec. 6 to be eligible for adoption and fulfillment. This year, participants now have the option to fulfill wishes from multiple people within a single household by adopting a family letter.

“For more than a century, USPS Operation Santa has brought communities together to make the holidays brighter,” said Sheila Holman, USPS marketing vice president. “Each year, we receive far more letters than we have adopters, and this year we want to change that – especially by encouraging participants to adopt family letters, which makes it possible to fulfill the wishes of an entire household at once.”

The Postal Service is also making it easier than ever for participants to fulfill holiday wishes. The USPS Operation Santa online gift catalog — introduced last year to streamline the fulfillment and shipping experience — will feature a significantly expanded selection with thousands of items. When letter adoption opens on Nov. 17, adopters will be able to shop and ship conveniently and directly from the online catalog.

For more information and full program guidelines, including important dates and details on how to write a letter or participate by fulfilling a letter, visit USPSOperationSanta.com.

Please Note: The United States Postal Service is an independent federal establishment, mandated to be self-financing and to serve every American community through the affordable, reliable and secure delivery of mail and packages to nearly 169 million addresses six and often seven days a week. Overseen by a bipartisan Board of Governors, the Postal Service is implementing a 10-year transformation plan, Delivering for America, to modernize the postal network, restore long-term financial sustainability, dramatically improve service across all mail and shipping categories, and maintain the organization as one of America’s most valued and trusted brands.

The Postal Service generally receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.

Hurricane Hugo – 36 Years Later (Reflections in Pictures and Video)

“I’ll wait for you, should I fall behind, wait for me” – Bruce Springsteen

On or about midnight on September 21/22 marked the 36th anniversary of Hurricane Hugo sending a destructive path through Charleston and its neighboring beaches and towns.  For many, this was the most difficult period of their lives, overcoming life-threatening conditions, losing homes and trying to find ways to start again.  Over the next several months, the area had to find a way to begin again and bring back the Southern warmth and beauty it had known for hundreds of years.

After all, was said and done, there were 27 fatalities in South Carolina from the effects of Hurricane Hugo.

Locals and citizens from neighboring towns and districts reached deep within their hearts and helped their fellow friends.  Bringing sand to the beaches, laying a foundation where a home once stood, providing shelter to strangers now without homes, and giving food and warmth when needed.

We were and continue to be a resilient and proud area, that has overcome much adversity so the sun may shine each day and we can continue to say how proud we are of our home.

Hugo was an event we should never forget.  It was tragic, but in the end, we found a way to rebuild and become stronger than ever before.

We would like to take you back to those days, weeks, and months and provide a pictorial remembrance of Hurricane Hugo.

Folly Beach, SC

Remember our past and find strength in our ability to remain stable.

One of the most symbolic remembrance markers of this event is the Folly Boat.  This boat that remained after the path of destruction is today used to show our sense of community, one message at a time.

The next time you are at White Point Gardens at The Battery, walk through the gates of the Battery Park Carriage House.  Just on the left you will see the waterline damage from Hurricane Hugo and know just how powerful a hit we took and more importantly how we persevered and grew as one single community.

Share Our Suzy: SOS Lowcountry — A Legacy of Care in the Lowcountry

By Mark A Leon

Share Our Suzy: SOS Lowcountry was created to honor the life and spirit of Suzy McGrane, a young woman whose journey with breast cancer inspired her family and friends to take action. What began as a small effort to support Suzy during her treatment has grown into a mission that continues to serve breast cancer patients across the Charleston area and beyond.

The organization’s purpose is simple yet powerful: to enhance the quality of life for breast cancer patients by providing financial assistance for needs that insurance often does not cover. Their work allows patients to focus on healing, rather than worrying about everyday expenses.

Filling the Gaps

A breast cancer diagnosis impacts far more than just health. Treatment schedules, time away from work, and the costs of daily living can quickly become overwhelming. SOS Lowcountry provides practical support such as:

  • Rent or utility assistance
  • Transportation and gas cards for treatment
  • Groceries and household expenses
  • Childcare help
  • Wigs, prosthetics, and other wellness needs

This support lightens the load for patients and families, giving them the peace of mind to focus on recovery.

Local Support, Direct Impact

SOS Lowcountry is unique in that it is entirely volunteer-driven, with little to no overhead. This means nearly every dollar raised goes directly to patient support. Donations stay within the Lowcountry, ensuring help reaches families right here in the community.

In 2023, the organization supported roughly 100 patients, working closely with the Suzy McGrane Breast Cancer Center at Roper Hospital and the Beaufort Memorial Cancer Center. Their reach continues to grow, extending support into both urban and rural areas of the region.

Building Community Through Events

Fundraising events are central to SOS Lowcountry’s mission. From the “Pink in the Rink” hockey game with the Charleston Stingrays to the Swing for SOS Tournament on Daniel Island, these gatherings raise essential funds while also fostering community connection and awareness.

Local businesses often partner with SOS through special promotions and give-back nights, further amplifying the organization’s impact. These collaborations highlight the strength of the Lowcountry community in supporting one another.

Why It Matters

A cancer diagnosis affects more than the patient — it touches families, workplaces, and entire communities. By stepping in to cover basic needs, SOS Lowcountry helps restore balance, dignity, and hope during an incredibly difficult time. Their work is a reminder that true healing involves more than medicine; it requires compassion, care, and community support.

How to Get Involved

Whether it’s through volunteering, donating, or attending a fundraising event, there are many ways to support Share Our Suzy: SOS Lowcountry. Every contribution helps continue Suzy’s legacy by ensuring patients and families have the support they need.

Coterie: Where Culinary Artistry Meets Local Charleston Charm

By Mark A. Leon

Nestled just off King Street at 17 Warren Street, Coterie is more than a restaurant—it’s a carefully curated experience that celebrates Charleston’s rich culinary landscape. Owner Jeremy Buck and Executive Chef Graham Calabria have created a dining destination that seamlessly blends sophisticated technique with genuine hospitality.

The restaurant’s design philosophy begins with its menu, which reads like a love letter to local producers. “I can name pretty much the first name of most of the producers on here,” Chef Graham explains, highlighting the restaurant’s commitment to hyperlocal sourcing. This approach means diners can trace their meal from farm to table, with ingredients sourced from local oyster farms, fishermen, and agricultural producers.

The cocktail program is equally thoughtful, curated by Buck, who brings international mixology experience from New York to Mumbai. The drink menu balances classic techniques with innovative twists, featuring creations like the Society Street—a personal variation on the Manhattan that Buck developed during his time in New York. “We want you to be casual and comfortable” Buck notes, emphasizing that each drink tells a story.

Coterie’s wine list, selected by sommelier Amanda McCrossin, offers an “esoteric but approachable” selection that complements the kitchen’s offerings. With around 30 carefully chosen Amaros and a wine list that challenges traditional selections, the beverage program is as dynamic as the food.

The menu itself is a testament to local abundance. Signature dishes like the peaches and cream—featuring fresh farm peaches with burrata and a delicate vinegar drizzle—showcase seasonal ingredients. The whole local fish, prepared to fall effortlessly off the bone, represents the kitchen’s commitment to highlighting coastal Carolina’s natural bounty.

Even dessert receives meticulous attention, with the caviar cheesecake representing culinary innovation. Chef Graham describes it as a sensory journey: “The sweetness hits your tongue first, then you go into that rich & velvety texture that coats your mouth, and then you have the top and brine of the caviar.”

Caviar Cheesecake

The restaurant’s physical space reinforces this philosophy of intentional experience. Located just off the bustling King Street, Coterie feels like “a rescue” from urban chaos. The outdoor garden setting, curated by owner Jital Vaghela, creates an intimate atmosphere that feels “1000 miles away” from the surrounding activity, despite being mere steps from the main thoroughfare of downtown.

Sustainability and local economic support are core to Coterie’s mission. Approximately 75% of their seafood comes from the southeastern United States, with Chef Graham actively participating in programs like the South Carolina Aquarium’s sustainable seafood initiative and the Department of Agriculture’s “Fresh on the Menu” program.

This commitment extends to personal relationships with producers. Chef Graham operates his own oyster cultivation lease with his partner Captain Ben Powers.  Graham, describes Ben as an individual whose “endurance and work ethic in maintaining those waters, coupled with the tens of thousands of hours navigating the folly rivers and creeks is the only way I will ever be able to do what I do.”

Executive Chef Graham Calabria

Together, they work directly with local fishermen like Bill Cox and Mark from Abundant Seafood, ensuring not just quality, but a genuine connection to the region’s culinary ecosystem.

Coterie represents more than a dining experience—it’s a celebration of Charleston’s agricultural and maritime heritage. By prioritizing local partnerships, innovative culinary techniques, and a welcoming atmosphere, Buck and Calabria have created a restaurant that feels both sophisticated and wonderfully unpretentious.

As Buck succinctly puts it, the goal is simple: “We want you to be comfortable, relaxed, and have a great time.” In every carefully crafted dish and cocktail, Coterie delivers exactly that.
